Title: Daddy John's Birthday!
Post by: colm kill paul on March 08, 2012, 01:20:08 AM
Hi Folks,

I wanted to celebrate today the anniversary of the birth of Mississippi John Hurt ("Daddy John" to his family).Today, 120 years ago, the world became a better place imho!

There is confusion about MJH's exact birthday.Philip Ratcliffe?s in his book " MJH, His Life, His Times, His Blues" observed the following: "Several dates have been recorded: March 8, 1892 (grave marker), ?man? Hurt (Son), Fred Bolden (grandnephew) Mar 16 1892 (social Security death index) may 7,1893 (some family members) May 8, 1895 (draft registration)" but in the end he opted to go with the March 8, 1892. So I'm happy to go with today also.

I'm playing "My Creole Belle" as taught by John Miller in his  The Guitar of MJH Vol 1 DVD and it is transcribed from the 1963 recording on Rounder records " Avalon Blues" if memory serves.

Philip Ratcliffe notes about this tune: "Creole Belles, was a cakewalk hit written in 1901 by Bodewalt Lampe with words by George Sidey on which John (Hurt) modelled his song ? My Creole Belle?. However, John ommitted most of Sidneys words and modified the tune considerably to suit his own style.".

My attempt here fails spectacularly to capture the magic of John's original but I hope up there some where John gets a kick to know his music inspired me to go out and try!

Happy Birthday Daddy John!

nice of you to bring this up CKP. The National Endowment-funded project that allowed the CD "Discovery" to be issued also enabled the production of a museum exhibit which is now on display at Middle Tennessee State University through the end of March. The University's Center for Popular Music was most helpful in providing images. The exhibit will become part of the permanent collection at the Delta Blues Museum in Clarkdale, MS when they've completed the expansion of their building. (and it's Phil Ratcliffe who wrote the book) :)

Did you ever meet Phil Colm?  Used to be an EBA regular...

Anyway, I said I'd add something.  Small MP3 quality issues as ever- but I think its not too bad...

Never met Philip at EBA but would be delighted to cross his path at some point in the future. His book is a master piece!

Happy Birthday Mississippi John!

Nice tunes guys - and that's a pretty sounding guitar you have there, Colm.

here's my version of Ain't No Tellin' - a bizzarre S&M anthem from the 20s

Gumbo,

Thanks for posting up a tune. I think you have a great feel on that one. Really enjoyed it.

FYI my guitar is a Lowden O35c, and I love it to bits, so thanks for the complement on the sound. It's the only guitar I have and I think the older it gets the better it sounds. Unfortunately the reverse applies to me ;)

I thought it sounded like on of those "i daren't look at the price tag" type guitars! :) Lovely sound.

i should say that my "bizarre S&M anthem" theory for Ain't no Tellin' has been debunked (http://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=4996.msg69018#msg69018) and rightfully so. It was just me mishearing the original lyric! Maybe I should do a rewrite?

I must now go away and put some time in to get my thumb working properly. I'm looking forward to hearing how this piece progresses over the next few months.

here's to the next 120 years :)

I'm a bit late with this, but I'd just like to join in the birthday celebrations with Jelly Roll Jones' version of Richland Woman, it's my favourite of all the songs we do. This was recorded a couple of years ago. http://youtu.be/uAdL-jcqK3c (http://youtu.be/uAdL-jcqK3c)

Great! You guys need a manager?

Looking at the whole scene, you've got all the necessary ingredients for a massively good time--musical instruments, beers, and someone gettin' down with a scrubboard.

Thanks for posting that.

Title: Party on the Back Porch
Post by: colm kill paul on February 08, 2013, 12:30:48 AM
Folks,

March 8th. ( 1 month from today) is Mississippi John Hurt's birthday and I'd like to invite you to bring you guitars round to the back porch for a party on the day.

If you are a John Hurt fan  and want to join the party just dust down your audio/video recorder over the coming weeks and record your version of a John Hurt tune. Then on March 8th we can post them up and have a global guitar pickin' party!

Now this is a Back Porch party so pride of place goes to those may not have posted a tune before and those who are still working on the finished tune and are posting a work in progress.(Go for it!!) We also need to hear the 2013 versions of John Hurt tunes you may have posted before!(your music is evolving!!) And just to show how warm and friendly the Back Porch can be, lets have some tunes from our next door neighbours in Performance Corner.(every party needs a pro!!)

See you here on the 8th March. BYOB. Hats are required!

well, I DO have a hat, although I don't play much Mississippi John Hurt. I'll start listening now and we'll see if anything comes out around the 8th.

Not sure when / if I'll be online tomorrow- so I'm throwing my little effort up now.

I wasn't wearing a hat and its only a few verses, but hopefully better than nothing!

Simon,

Your picking sounds mighty fine, clean and sweet. Singing is really on the money. Almost top marks...I have to deduct a mark or two for the hat free style  >:D...but all the same a great rendition of Pallet. Thanks for taking time out to mark the big day.

That was nice, Slim, and very much in keeping with his style!

I'm also going to crash the party early as I won't be around tomorrow.  I ran out of time to get a better take than this so please excuse the mistakes and memory loss! (Don't think I'll win any points for the hat effort either :) )

Christopher,

Good luck with the gig. It's good to know that there will be a live celebration happening too. Look forward to your post.

Happy Twelvety-First Birthday (to paraphase Tolkien) Mississippi John Hurt!

Well this party has already started thanks to Norfolk Slim and Laura getting the tunes rolling!

Here is my tribute to John Hurt. His Guitar playing and music occupy a very special place in my life. This is my first attempt at video and it is a great way to improve. I'll be doing more.

This version of See See Rider is the one John Miller teaches on his DVD "The Guitar of Mississippi John Hurt, Vol 1". John has tabbed out perfectly MJH's performance of See See Rider from his late night sessions of 63/64 which are on the Legend CD. Unfortunately I can't yet play it perfectly...but will continue to endeavour towards that goal.

In addition to celebrating MJH's birthday I'd also like to thank JohnM for recording the DVD's "The Guitar of Mississippi John Hurt Vol.s 1 & 2". They are keys to the kingdom! Thanks John.

Sounding real good, ladies and gents. Frankie, I was thinking of something on the banjo, but not that - that totally works, very cool.

I was a little surprised to see Waiting for You on the recent Discovery CD. I thought it was one of those songs he dug up after playing everything else. But It seems he and the Mrs. liked it and it was one of the tunes they did for Hoskins.

I'm trying the soundcloud thing, as it was sounding a little rough compressed down to the Weenie requirements.

Please go back and try reloading the page, waiting for it to load fully. Sorry for the inconvenience!"

Apparently the link worked for Uncle Bud.  Are others able to hear it?

If you go my "homepage" on bandcamp, this tune comes up by default since it's the last thing I posted:

maybe the link is the issue? I'd have done it as a video if my Movie Maker app wasn't punking on me!

Hi all,
One cool thing about honoring John Hurt is that the song selections can be all over the place, blues, and country songs and hymns, old pop tunes, all over the map.  Thanks for your good words, Colm, but you give me too much credit:  John Hurt played the tunes, and you did the work to learn them.  Well done!  I'm with Pan, I like the party, and the variety is a treat.

Just a perfect day...

Folks I think we all did something fairly special there for MJH's birthday. I've listen to all the contributions one after another, several times, and I doubt if you could hear such a high calibre collection of Hurt tunes at any gig anywhere...so Weenies done good! From Berlin, Germany to Birmingham, Washington State, from hymns to hookers, hats or no hats we certainly did go all over the map!

Sincere thanks folks for making this fly. The response took me completely by surprise. There is gold in them there Weenie hearts!

A final nod before I go to my mentor JohnM (I don't think he will mind ...too much :P) but I believe I'm right in saying that "Mary,Don't you Weep" is John's Weenie debut post and is something of a landmark event! It is a beautiful piece!

Thank you Back Porch for your kind words! Now to deal with my hang over...

Hi Folks,

It is that time of year again! A month to go to Mississippi John Hurt's birthday. I'm dusting down the camcorder and getting myself organised to have something to post on the big day : March 8th.

Last year was such a great party that realistically it would be hard to match! However, if you have the time over the coming month and you want to help mark the day it would be greatly appreciated if you join me for the Back Porch Party for MJH.

They say "Third time is the Charm"! Here's hoping! Anything close to last year would be mighty!

All the best

Happy Birthday John Smith Hurt! I thank you for the music.

I'd like to dedicate this year's party on "The Back Porch" to Art Browning who sadly passed away this year (18th Aug 2013 R.I.P.).

I met Art only once, the brief occasion of my visit to MJH's home place on a September, Saturday afternoon in Mississippi in 2012 but he has left an indelible mark on me for the rest of my days. That afternoon his generosity and grace were inspirational. He silently and patiently listened to my learner renditions of MJH tunes played on his guitar and kept encouraging me to play another. When he should have been heading home not only did he spend nearly 2 hours walking me around MJH's home explaining fantastic detail such as how MJH made a brace for the leg of his chair with a tobacco tin (see pic attached) but then insisted on taking me personally to see The Valley Store when I asked for directions (see pic attached). I was lucky to have had that time with him and I feel his loss despite such a brief encounter.

So let's get this party rolling then! This year I have, for your delectation 14 MJH tune's from which you may choose to partake in. I have played the 14 tunes as taught by John Miller on his most excellent DVD's "The Guitar of MJH" Volume One & Volume Two. The recording is done live straight through and the stumbles remain where they fell. It was great fun to do and I am delighted to have reached this milestone. (It has taken " a while" to  get myself to complete this project and play all 14!).This is a link to my You Tube Channel so hopefully you might drop in and listen to a tune for the day that is in it.

Great ! Loved it all so far, especially Colm's olympic effort.
I'm loving playing Monday Morning Blues these days, so here it is :

Bless him, Mississippi John Hurt, without a doubt the man who did most to lead me kindly to this music.

Hi all,
I'm kind of late to the party because I was out of town and off the internet on John Hurt's birthday, but thanks to all who posted performances to celebrate his birthday.  It's really nice to see and hear the personal touches that everyone injected into his or her performances, people's different touches on the guitar, feel for rhythm and vocal phrasing.  That's an awful lot of songs to have ready to go on one day of recording, too, Colm, and I'm sure that represents a big investment in time and effort, none of which, I suspect, you regret.  Well done, one and all!
All best,
Johnm

Don't think the RGD one happened- perhaps because there are fewer people on here who can competently play his stuff (I certainly can't).

There was a McTell one and a Patton one in the distant past though.

Nice to see some new faces - thanks to joe paul and jtbrown, nice renditions enjoyed them a lot!  Colm I promised to come back and let you know my favourite.  It has to be "You Got To Walk That Lonesome Valley" I like the little bit of storytelling at the start - you must have been watching the Rainbow Quest (he was amazing on that wasn't he!).  Which song are you most happy with?  Of course always good to hear Simon, well done all :)
Gary Davis sure is more intimidating but I have to give that a go. Just over 6 weeks to get something together - good luck!

Hi Folks,

Just wanted to mark Mississippi John Hurt's birthday ( March 8th. ) here among the folks who care most.

This clip is the result of my first go at picking out a tune from the recording: "Praying On the Old Camp Ground". It's a work in progress still but close enough to share I hope.

I'm a couple of day's late for John Hurt's birthday, but here is a tribute song for him.

PS (MP3 file was too big to insert directly ... hence the link)

Nothing wrong with your Creole Belle mate and I am sure MJH would have been honoured.

Thanks Folks for the positive comments. I greatly appreciate them.

John,

"Who can take a title,
Sprinkle it with tunes..." The Miller Man can!

I love this version of Candy Man. It should be released as a flip side on a double A side single with MJH's Candy Man on one Side and your version of Candy Man styled ala MJH on the other. This is just too cool!

Love the guitar melody notes running like sweet honey all the way. Pure ear candy!

Thanks John. You are pure class!

I'm a bit late to the party as I have been away on a course.  This is a one take wonder.  Need to get the lyrics more firmly in my head some time but I think I got away with it...

I like Colm's post.  The tempo really 'stumbles' in a very effective way which isn't, to me, so evident in the MJH original.  Its a nice take on it.

Thanks, Pan and Colm, for the good words.  I often find myself wondering what players who liked Pop material, like John Hurt, Mance Lipscomb, Lonnie Johnson, Bill Williams and John Jackson would do in arranging more recent Pop material.  I reckon that was the impetus for "The Candyman".
All best,
Johnm

I just discovered this topic, I must have missed it when I set up my account here. I love listening to peoples' versions of MJH material, so I went back and read the entire topic and listened to the MJH music.  Lotsa fun. A member called Poppy  also started another topic recently with a version of Shake That Thing which I also enjoyed.  What would we do without MJH?

Nice stuff everyone! All I have to add to the party is this recording from nearly 10 years ago (when I just started playing blues music) of me playing Big Leg Blues. I don't really like this performance but it has a nostalgic feel to me in terms of how I used to sound haha. Available here:

Simon,

Thanks for posting Frankie. I'm impressed with how confident and bold the guitar sounds. Nice Job! I was trying to get as close to the original with my clip but I guess the intermittent bass line is coming out with a different "stumblin" vibe. I'm delighted you like it. It is encouraging.

Roig Big Leg Blues sound great as per usual for your fine performances.

Blind Boy Joe, it is fun to shoot back through the years and see all the talent we have at MJH's party ( I must try and restore some of my links). Thanks for dropping by!

Hi All,

Monday is the 8th of March and the anniversary of the inspirational Mississippi John Hurt's birthday. We have the weekend to record something to post here to mark the man and his legacy! Can be anything! MJH played all...originals, covers, religious and rude...have some fun and join me in wishing the great man a happy birthday in this crazy year of the Covid 19 pandemic.

I play this tune in honour of the great man's birthday: Happy Birthday Mississippi John Hurt! As it is International Women's Day too we should remember also Mary Jane McCain, John's mother, who as a single mother of 10 children, with very limited resources, found the way to give her youngest child, John, the guitar he so pined for when he was 9 years old. She changed music forever! Also for the wonderful Mary Frances Hurt Wright, John's granddaughter who cherishes his legacy so beautifully.

Thanks, Colm, for suggesting re-instituting this tradition and for taking the bull by the horns and doing something about it. Thanks also for your version of "Let The Mermaids Flirt With Me"--sounding good! I assume the landscapes in the video are the ocean viewed from Galway? Beautiful!
Thanks also, Simon, for "Richland Woman Blues", sounding good with a lot of flow, too.

I'll try and post an arrangement of mine of a song that, as far as I know, John Hurt never recorded, though the sound was certainly influenced by his sound. The song is "The Cat's Got the Measles and the Dog's Got the Whooping Cough", which was done by Papa Charlie Jackson and Walter "Kid" Smith, though this version is nothing like either of theirs. I hope I made the .mp3 small enough--sound likely to be very no-frills, sorry.

All best,
Johnm

Simon,

beautiful version of Richland Women Blues. Spell binding performance! thank you.

By some cosmic force we both have chosen tunes which MJH composed the guitar part for but the lyrics were written by W.E. Myer of the Lonesome Ace Record Company, Viginia.

Until I found that detail out these two tunes used to puzzle me. Avalon has to be 500 miles plus from the sea...why did MJH write about Mermaids and similarly Richland was a  hell of a drive for a date...why would he sing about Richland Women! It was a real..."Aha!" moment when I learnt about Myer writing the lyrics.

Ps I got a lovely reaction today on Facebook from Mary Hurt Wright, MJH's granddaughter for marking his birthday https://www.facebook.com/groups/958474884248927/permalink/3803506059745781/?comment_id=3803989743030746 (https://www.facebook.com/groups/958474884248927/permalink/3803506059745781/?comment_id=3803989743030746). Dog Gone John Miller! If that ain't the prettiest and funest pandemic party tune ever, well I don't know what is!

Thanks for the kind words John. This is fun!

By the way, I moved north east and live on the other coast of Ireland now. The images are of Carlingford Lough, and rather lazily, are shot from my living room window! They still look nice all the same I think!
