Unexpected Blues Quotations
« on: September 22, 2010, 05:41:12 AM »
"Check all your razors
An' your gunsWe're gonna be wrasslin'
When the Wagon comes."

This quote, attributed to Bessie Smith (Which song is it from?) opens the Chapter on the role of wrestling and seizing in Chinese martial arts in Draeger and Smith's 1969 classic "Asian Fighting Arts". So, where was the strangest, least expected blues quote or reference you have encountered?

I can hear in my head the spoken intro ?25 cents? I wouldn?t pay 25 cents to go in nowhere". This and Black Mountain are two of my favourites, plenty of in-your-face bravado!

Have you ever seen peaches grow on a sweet potato vine?
Well, wake up woman, take your legs off of mine.

Army Blues-Bukka White

Maybe not unexpected but original to say the least I think.

When Uncle Sam take all your men
And boys to war
I'm 'onna be just like a coon
When Uncle Sam take all your men
And boys to war
Boys, I'm 'onna be just like a coon
Ev'ry mornin' before the moon go down
I won't start a-tappin 'fore around I roam

I been dealing with the Devil-Sonny Boy Williamson

Fighting For Dear Old Uncle Sam really looks bleak in print because it lack's J. D Short's passioned singing which is superbly complemented by driving harmonica and guitar.

I may go down in South Pacific go down in the European land (x2),
But I'm going down swinging boys, I'm going down fighting for dear old Uncle Sam.

So dark was the night now, people cold, cold was the ground (x2),
Me and my buddies in some old foxhole, we had to keep our heads on down.

Well, machine guns and cannon roaring, boys we were afraid to raise our heads (x2)
You know I bet it cost a million dollars, boys now you know we'd all have been dead.

It's the first of the month now, salute the lieutenant and get our pay,
It's the first of the month now, salute the lieutenant boys and get our pay,
There's a little piece of paper laid on the side, sign it and send your wife home a lot of pay.

Some say they'll be so glad when the boys all come back home again,
Some say they' 11 be so glad, boys all come back home again,
You get so many soldiers without their pay, the soldiers ain't gonna be your friend.

Honey the war's all over, ain't nothing but a different shout,
Honey the war's all over, nothing but a different shout,
'Cause the war's all over, they just don't know what it's all about.
