We could sit here and play five thousand blues... Because all three of us here now, we knows it. When he sings it (Brownie McGhee), when he starts it then it comes to me, and it comes to Sonny (Terry) and then to Brownie... Because you feel it from one another, which don't happen to all musicians though - Big Bill Broonzy

Weeping Willow
« on: July 31, 2007, 08:52:50 AM »

I set out to learn Weeping Willow and pulled out the recordings I have of this song in my collection: Blind Boy Fuller, Ernie Hawkins and Pink Anderson. All three guitarist use the same lick in the song, but where they start it varies between the first and second beat of the measure.

Blind Boy Fuller plays it this way:

-------------------|----1------0-------|
-----2------0------|-------3-------3---|
--------2-------2--|----2------0-------|
-----2------0------|-0-------------3---|   etcetera
-0--------------4--|-------------------|
-------------------|-------------------|

Hawkins and Anderson more like this:

---------------------|--1------0---------|
---2------0----------|-----3-------3-----|
------2-------2------|--2------0---------|
---2------0----------|-------------3---0-|  etcetera
--------------4---0--|-------------------|
---------------------|-------------------|

It's a subtle difference, but it changes the feel of the song a bit, IMO. I have a couple of other recordings of this song, but the interpretations, guitar accompaniment, are different (Roy Book Binder, Michael Cooney) Anyone know if BBF the source recording for this song?

(To those of you reading the same post on another forum, pardon the duplicate post!)

both of 'em sounds right to my poor ears
John Cephas does another and all of them (you mentioned) could have played it slightly different even from one verse to another
Let it sound yours I'm sure it works
