Hi gullyjim:

Mississippi John Hurt sings, "...six feet under the clay," in "Louis Collins" (1928) so it was probably in circulation and not a one-off.

I will correct the lyrics😀

Thanks Anthony, that's what I seems to  heard, but I was doubtful whether using "clay" as a metaphor for "grave" would be correct!

Hey, John, I think you've put in a different recording.  As it surely isn't Charlie Patton. Thanks

Country Blues Lyrics / Re: Charlie Patton lyrics

Hi all,
Charlie Patton recorded "Some These Days I'll Be Gone" at his second recording session, in Grafton, Wisconsin around October of 1929, accompanying himself out of E position in standard tuning. It is a beautiful rendition of a beautiful song, and Charlie chose not to indulge in any spoken asides, playing and singing it very straight. The song would appear to have had Pop origins, though it is altogether different musically and lyrically from the "Some of These Days" that Sophie Tucker, "The Last of the Red Hot Mamas", had a huge hit with. The vocal phrasing is both unusual and perfectly natural-sounding. I have transcribed the lyrics to show that the phrase "some these" is always sung as pick-ups to the downbeat, where "days" falls. So the double bars in the first line of the first verse show that the downbeat of the song's form is the word "days". I've tried to be scrupulous about differentiating between when Charlie Patton sang "going", when he sang, "goin'", and when he sang "gonna" or "gon'".  Here is "Some These Days I'll Be Gone":

INTRO

Some these || Days, you gonna miss your honey, some these
Days, I am going away, some these
Days, you gonna miss your honey, I know you're gon'
Miss me, sweet dream, for I be goin' away, some these

Days, you gon' be sorry, some these
Days, I am going away, some these
Days, you gonna miss your honey, I know you're gonna
Miss me, sweet dream, for I be goin' away, you will

Never know, what your friend will do, 'til he's
Gone away, you will

Miss him, for returning, you will
Miss him, from going away, you will
Miss him, oh, my little honey, I know you're gon'
Miss me, sweet dream, for I be goin' away

Some these days, you gon' be sorry, some these
Days, I am going away, some these
Days, you gon' miss your honey, I know you're gon'
Miss me, sweet dream, for I be goin' away, you will

Never know, what your friend will do, 'til he's
Gone away, you will

Miss him, oh, my little honey, you will
Miss him, from going away, you will
Miss him, oh, little honey, I know you're gon'
Miss me, sweet dream, for I be goin' away, some these

Days, you gon' sorry, some these
Days, I am going away, some these
Days, gonna miss your honey, I know you're gon'
Miss me, sweet dream, for I be goin' away, some these

Days, gonna miss your honey, some these
Days, I am going away, some these
Days, gonna miss your honey, I know you're gon'
Miss me, sweet dream, for I be goin' away, some these

Days, going to be leaving, some these
Days, I'll be going away, some these
Days, gonna miss your honey, I know you're gon'
Miss me, sweet dream, for I be goin' away

CODA

All best,
Johnm

Good catch, Anthony! It is definitely "put her in the clay".

Hi John and Gullyjim, I'm hearing "put her in the clay" for the tagline in the fourth verse.
Cheers
Anthony
