Most definitely.  Steve is an excellent teacher.  I own the DVD and have borrowed the book from my library repeatedly.  There is some overlap between the two, but the book has a lot more and also has lots of stories and details the DVD lacks.  He also has a small book out that doesn't teach any songs, but gives some tips and history about blues guitar.  Also highly recommended.

I agree, Steve's roots and blues fingerstyle book has a lot of good information in it. All very accessible. If you ever get a chance, catch one of his many seminars, his teaching style is not to be missed!

I'd like to add my recommendation for the book, which contains tabs for some songs I've not seen elsewhere. The stories mentioned above also give the book a bit of "mojo" raising it a bit above other instructional tab books. It's one of the guitar books in my possesion I keep returning to!

Absolutely!  I have had several workshops with Steve and started obsessing on Talco Girl after taking a workshop from him in 1994.  I actually had some recurring dreams about Steve and I, and me asking him to show me that tune and he always saying "no!".  Then I ran into him after a small concert in 97 and told him about my dreams.  He said, ya want me to show it to you, and we sat down on the stage he had just performed on and he did!  But it wasn't till he played in my kitchen here in Guatemala in March that I really got the fine details!  Oh what a buzz!

I worked up the tune "Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight" when it came out on Art and Grit, but could not, for the life of me, figure out what he was doing on the palm harmonics part at the end.  So I bought his DVD just for that.  Not that that's all I learned from it, but it woulda been worth it even if it was.  Of all the folks that I have learned from, Steve is the most accessible.

He and I are planning a workshop in Guatemala (it's still the 1930's here....only with cell phones) focusing on March of 2011.  Send me an email with Steve James in the title, to carlosfunk@yahoo.com if you might be interested and I will keep you up on the developments.
