I think anyone who finds this article of interest will also find 'The Warmth of Other Suns' by Isabel Wilkerson a fascinating read, covering the migration from the south to the north and western cities.  Highly recommended.

I agree, a fabulous book -- not really musically oriented, but 5 different fascinating accounts of migrations.
