Very guitar-centric of me to only mention Ashley.  The washboard kept me as enthralled as the guitar.  Just great music all around.

Now for something completely different:

While working on a bottleneck version of this tune I stumbled across this version.  Boyd Rivers.  AMAZING VOCALS!!

Just Fucking amazing! That's a treasure, and what an unusual right hand position he used. Thanks for this.

Jimi Hendrix accoustic guitar..Is that a KG-11 ???

I'm guessing that's a big ol' Kay. First I thought it might be a J200 but the upper bout shape is different as is the bridge and inlay design. Makes Jimi sound positively down home!

Warning: Political content, but with a good dance beat, Louisiana style.

Made me start thinkin' 'bout my favorite Zydeco guy. Listen to how he attacks a phrase sideways. Extraordinary!

Elijah Wald just turned me on to Karen Dalton at PT this summer.  And I just finally thought about youtubing her name! Absolutely beautiful stuff!!

[Edit]: While I'm thinkin' 'bout bluesy female vocalists that should be WAY more famous than they are/were...  Just found some ol' Barbara Dane (via Hitchcock):

Here's a 14 minute film of Fred Mc Dowell from 1969 called "Blues Maker".

You can download the film too, if you want to.

Also from the same site, a 16 minute film from 1947 of the the origins of banjo and development of southern folk music, featuring a young Pete Seeger.

That Sweet Emma Barrett is fabulous. It also led to this Gus Cannon bit:

There's one for the quote generator:

You don't know whether to cut their throat or to cry again. That's the blues! (spells) B L U S E ! - Son House

Killer clip. Bloomfield is too much, like when he outs himself for being a rich kid? And the young Butterfield. I'd never seen any of Son's interview, either. The whole thing really gives a feeling of that era. Seeing footage of the early Canned Heat, with Wilson, also makes that connection for me.

All for now.

Where'd it all go? I think this is from the movie "Festival" which I've never seen, and I think it documents Newport 65? The same year of Bob's electrical metamorphosis.  The truth is that to a large degree his commercial success really did signal the death of that scene, and except for him, what replaced it was mostly less interesting imo.
