Soundhole diameter, Gibson L-00

Howdy:

I was playing my '33 Gibson L-00 the other day when I noticed that the soundhole is quite large, compared with all my other guitars.

I wonder, if any of you who own L-00s or can get your hands on one, would you measure the diametre of the soundhole opening so I may compare with mine.

Mine is an even 4"

Just curious, thanks
Alex

Not an L-00, but its cousin: my Kalamazoo KGN-12 is also exactly 4".

I have a set of plans that somebody drew up after painstakingly measuring a 1940 L-00.  He marked the soundhole at 3.94 inches.  So, pretty close to what you've got there.  4" diameter is standard for dreadnoughts too.

On the flipside of that, I have a '29 L-1 with an abnormally small soundhole.  Someone, at some point before I got the guitar, decided to inlay a donut of wood inside the existing hole to make it smaller.  I have no idea why it was done, but they did a clean enough job, and the guitar sounds so good, I wouldn't change it.

Yes, they are quite large, but the sound is so good.
