Stella 12-string on eBay
« on: March 08, 2007, 06:18:36 AM »
OK, so these have gone up in price dramatically in the past 5 to 10 years, but this is just nuts:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140094056668&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:CA:1

$60,000 starting bid? Anyone?

I think I'd rather buy 25-30 new ones from Todd.  :P

Hard to imagine anyone paying 60K for Ledbelly's guitar much less for that guitar.

The guitar has just been relisted on ebay.

The previous auction is at
http://tinyurl.com/2aphpp
You can see the other items of the seller. He sells a 1930 Martin OM-45 Deluxe for only $3,750,000.00  :o

It is completely absurd.  Especially since they've stuck that ugly, nasty pickguard to the top to disguise the pick wear.   There's an almost identical guitar at Retrofret in Brooklyn for $8000.

Sounds good to me Slack .  Sold!  :-*

The thing that always comes to mind when I see this stuff is that its not about instruments, but about money. Trolling for suckers is more like it. I wonder if any of these "gems" are ever sold for anything close to their asking price.

I think it is a pretty well established fact that wealth is no indication of intelligence.  At these prices, you just need one sucker.

Here's another one that is a little carried away.

leonard:

Now this I can see. This disc was Robert Johnson's only hit during his lifetime, in decent shape, and it's really him playing. That doesn't frost my pumpkins like a $60, 000 old, who-knows-what-providence 12 string.

BTW, Waxy, I ain't gonna pay $60,000 for your Sov.

Hi all,
I find it vaguely reassuring that no one has yet posted, saying, "Come on, guys, it really might be worth it!".
All best,

Interesting to note that on that RJ 78 most of the label wear is on the Terraplane side - does this indicated that it was the other side that was played most?

Hey Ghostrider
You know your right. If its worth it to ya. Claptons guitar Blackie went for just shy of a million. I think Guitar center people bought it. I ain't much of a trekie, but a 6 ft model of the Enterprise D  went for $500.000
I was wondering if Robert Johnson's record was a reissue it had digits on the front something like 02/25/56. I don't know if 56 is too late for a 78 or not. Don't really know anything about old records.   lenny

Record 7-03-56 is the date the record was issued. 7=1937, 03=March, 56=6th Hillbilly or Race record issued that month.

At $60,000 I'd be afraid to touch the guitar let alone play it!

I have never played an OS Stella 12 string so I can't really judge but my hunch is its not worth paying over 100 times more than I paid for my Harmony Stella 12.. also bought on eBay..

I posted some videos on youtube... here's one...
