John said he had been to the doctor, who said, "You gotta quit smoking those Camels". Eyeing the cigarette that John was about to place in his mouth, someone said "But John, you're still smoking", to which John replied, "Well, he didn't say nothin' about Pall Malls" - from Phil Ratcliffe's Biography of Mississippi John Hurt

waxwing puttin' it out there
« on: October 14, 2004, 04:11:19 PM »
Hope some of you bay arean Weenies can make it out to what is essentially my first two set gig. I'll be playing, solo, this Monday, the 18th at The Odeon Bar. Sure, I'll be playin' lots of stuff you heard me play at PT, but I've practiced a lot since then, honest. Of course, I'll be performing with several sweet old guitars. The best way to get there is to take 101 to the Cesar Chavez exit, take Chavez west to Mission, turn left on Mission (which you can do now) and the Odeon is on the left just after the second light, which is where Valencia merges in from the right.
What guitars you are wondering? OK.
1920ish Stella concert
1920ish Sovereign grand concert 12
1930 National Style O
1967 Martin D-18S
Hope to see you there as it's pretty much just friends and family on Monday nights. No cover, so bring a date. I'll really appreciate your support and I look forward to reminiscing about life in the Bricks.
All for now.
John C.

Break a leg John!  Wish I were in the Bay area to drop by.

(2 sets - very impressive, I don't think my memory is that long!)

Cheers,

Yeah, but they're 15 minute sets...

Kidding!  ;D  You were sounding just great at PT, John, so I'm sure it will be a fine evening of country blues. Way to get out there doing it. Have a blast!

John, I wish you a great show. I'm afraid it's doubtful I'll be able to come down for this one -- it's a school night, and I have out-of-town guests next week.  :(

Break a leg, but no strings!

Best of luck with the show, John.  If you feel like posting set lists after the gig, I'm sure many of us would find it interesting.  Knock 'em dead!
All best,

John,

I will try to make it down to the Odean for your show.  I went to the City on Wednesday for Dylan.  I couldn't believe the weather.  Got out of the show at around 10:30 and it must have been 80 degrees, it was like friggin Mexico.  I have a bunch of things going on next week but I will try my best to make it.  I have a jamming friend that works in the City so maybe I can meet him and come on over.  That is what I did for Dylan.

If I don't make it best of luck to you.  I am sure you will be great.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the encouragement. It really helps. Takin' a break from practicin' and checkin' the WCB now and then.

John M., I've got it down to two 10 song sets that come in around 45 mins. each without any patter, so I guess I'll have to be kinda glib. I'll post the list as soon as I can.

Extra thanks to Gary and MarkM and anyone else who can make it. Oh, and I seem to have neglected to say I'll start at 8 PM. Following me will be J. L. Stiles, a very fine ragtime picker who also does some of his own material as well. I saw him open for John Hammond Jr. a while back.

All for now.

Thanks Gary. And I appreciated you being there. I guess Monday night, especially with current sports playoffs etc. and the threat off the first storm of the rainy season, is a hard draw. But a few stalwart friends did make it out and I at least proved to myself that I have two solid sets of material. I also had an interesting revelation: that my initial nerves were manifested mostly by tightness and inaccuracy in my right hand. I noticed it about three songs in, Policy Blues, and made an effort to relax it and things went well from there on. I actually did feel pretty relaxed, knowing everyone in the place, and felt good about my performance. Had some good discussion with the sound guy/bartender/owner (the only person I didn't know well) about mics, and about developing my own audience, which seems to be my next area of focus. Gotta get some warm up gigs for known acts. All in all, a very beneficial evening.
We decided to abbreviate the second set as several folks had to leave after the first, but here are the set lists as I had planned them:
SET I
'30 National Style O
Untrue Blues - BBF - A - capo 2
Jivin' Woman Blues - BBF - C - capo 2
Policy Blues - BC - Drop D - open
'20s Stella
Canned Heat Blues - TJ - Drop D - capo 2
Future Blues - WB(1) - Spanish - capo 2
'67 Martin D-18S
Mississippi Blues - WB(2) - A - capo 3 (just for Pyro)
Sportin Life Blues - DVR arr. of BMcG - Drop D - capo 2
'20s Sovereign 12 (tuned standard at B)
St. James Infirmary Blues - DVR arr. - Am - open
Meat Shakin' Woman Bues - BBF - C - open
'30 National Style O
Down South Blues - DVR arr. of SB - A - capo 3

SET II
'20s Stella
Frankie - MJH - Spanish - capo 4
Avalon Blues - MJH - E - capo 2 (OMITTED)
'30 National Style O
Walkin' My Troubles Away - BBF - E - capo 2
New Lovin' Blues - BM - drop D - open (OMITTED)
Ragged and Dirty - WB(2) - G - capo 5
'67 Martin D-18S
Chump Man Blues - BB - drop D - capo 2 (OMITTED)
Goin' Down Slow - LH - E - capo 2 (OMITTED)
Come Back Baby - DVR arr. of WD - A - capo 2
'20s Sovereign 12 (tuned standard at B)
Risin River Blues - GC - E - capo 4
Broke Down Engine - BWMcT - E - open

Thanks again for all the Weenie encouragement. Glad I finally had some time to post.
All for now.

Speaking of tunes on the 12, John does an jammin' version of "Broke Down Engine" it ended the set with high energy.
I was really impressed with John's show, it was kinda inspirational (made me want to go home and play my guitar).

Hi John,
I'll echo Andrew and say thanks for posting your set lists.  After looking at them, I'd describe them as my Dad would,"Lots of meat and not many potatoes".  It's a really good-looking program I hope to hear sometime.
All best,
Johnm

Great set lists John....  I like the vintage guitar delineations too!
