Listening to Slide Guitar Masters With Ry Cooder
(1/1)
jasobr:
In August 1992 I journeyed to Ry Cooder’s home to interview him for a Guitar Player magazine cover story. We were scheduled to spend several hours together, so in addition to my recording gear and list of questions, I brought along a cassette of ten stellar slide guitar recordings. Cooder, after all, is one of the world’s foremost bottleneck players. If we had the time, I figured, it would be interesting to hear his take on each of these songs. Baby Face Leroy's Trio (with Little Walter and Muddy Waters), Elmore James, Hambone Willie Newbern, Casey Bill Weldon, and Fred McDowell are among the artists. Here's a link to the interview, which has embedded audio for all of the songs:

Michael Segui:
This issue of the magazine was like to Rosetta Stone for me.
I recently purchased a new copy on eBay.
I learned so much from your interview in the pre intenet days.
Thanks so much
Mike
lindy:
I tried finding the original Guitar Player magazine so I could read the 1992 article "CHICKEN SKIN SLIDE - A LESSON WITH RY." Here's a text-only version, please forgive the long url:

Unfortunately, copyright restrictions mean that the original illustrations had to be taken out. Also, there's some overlap with the article that Jas linked us to a few days ago, but it's still worth reading.
Thanks for posting this, Jas, always enjoy reading your stuff.

Stuart:
Thanks, Lindy. Interesting reading.
I met Ry 50+ years ago on a Saturday morning at a workshop at UVM. I figured the place would be jammed so I left my guitar at home. It turned out there were only about three of us there. --Go figure... Another bonehead move in a long sequence that's lasted a lifetime.
