European Weenie gathering?...
« on: June 05, 2006, 10:47:58 AM »
I originally posted this tagged onto the end of another topic...but on thinking about it, would it be viable???

Basically, would any of you UK Weenies consider coming here for a Weenie weekend... no idea of details whatsoever but performance would have to be high on the list!

Let me know and if there are a few of you I'll enquire into whatever I have to enquire into!!

Meet the voice of the juke at no extra cost  ;D

Well if you have one in '07 I may make it. My partner, Gre, and I have been trying to get over since our Commitment ceremony 3 years ago, but life issues have continued to get in the way. It looks like we ain't gonna make it again this year, either. The plan is to visit the Orkneys (birds and ruins) and Scotland (well, Cowan is a Scottish name) and then over to Paris, where she has many ties. I was hopin' to meet some of you folks, and if you're all gonna be in one spot it would make it easy.

All for now.

Where would "here" be, Richard?  I gather you're in the Channel Islands.  I know Prof. Scratchy is in Edinburgh and Blueshome and I reside in SE England.  OK, distances aren't as vast as in North America, but they would still be an issue.

Anyway, you're tempting me...   :-\

I think the event should be advertised with Weenie Campbell given top billing on the list of performers.  :)

"Here" for those that don't know is Guernsey.. a little but pretty Island and if everybody came with a guitar it would probaly sink  ;)

Waxy... an honour... maybe if there is enough interest I should set about doing it for next year... ???

As a clue as to timing, if it ever came off the hotels are generally a bit quiet beginning\end of season so sort of April\September would be better for getting a deal from my past experience of tryingput things on.

God, this is getting serious.... :)

And, of course artists with nothing less than top billing would be expected to perform.. with my guitar playing I think I'll find me a piano player and play me drums!!

I forgot, who is Weenie's current agent I seem to have mislaid it somewhere amongst the wine bottles..

September or April are both fine - though Easter sometimes gets in the way of April and pushes flight prices up. In September you can fly to Guernsey form Edinburgh for thirty quid. Waxy could fly back to Edinburgh to begin the Scottish leg of his world tour of the UK and would be more than welcome to reside at Scratchy Towers.

Sounds interesting. I would reckon September would be the better bet as the weather is generally more likely to be better.

Shave a stoat, what have I started  :-X

Numbers are creeping up so it's looking as though it might come off... I dare say I can rattle a few chains on the EBA as well.

Let me put a little meat on the bare bones.

I know from past experience that I can't promise to get cheap transport for anybody, but if booked well in advance it's not that bad for instance I recently got a Gatwick return ?60 but note that flights booked very late will cost a fortune.

To get a deal on a decent hotel - I would think everybody in the same one would be the way to go - I will need some idea of numbers and then I can approach some hotels and see what dates are available.

Any suggestions, questions... about anything!!!

Why not provisionally nominate a September weekend and set a deadline (a couple of weeks or so) for folk to commit or not. Then you'd have numbers with which to bargain with hotels...?

I mentioned this thread to Roger Hubbard yesterday and his response was: "When do we go?"  So there's a potential performer/workshop leader.  Let me know if you're interested, Richard, and I'll sound him out.

I agree with Yves' comment on Bob Tilling, as he's just over the water on Jersey.

By the way, when you say "September" do you mean this year or next??

Don't worry to much about accomodation... it will work (simple hotel ...)
Let's fix up a date (I'm completely available on we 7 - 8 & 23 - 24)

23-24 September for me.  I'm busy with our local festival for the first two weeks in September. (That's if I can make it to Guernsey of course :-\).

If is to be this year I had better try and sound out a hotel or two and see what vacancy situation looks like.

I do have slight problem in that I am virtually away for the next couple of weeks but I'll try and see if I can get any sense out of a couple of hotels I know that would suit and have a room\bar for jams or whatever.

If things look fraught then maybe we should put our thinking caps on and get really organised to do it April-ish next year which give more time to get a few more folks as well.

I'll try and do all I can this weekend working on say 10 rooms and will report back before I set sail for Corsica (any Weenies in Corsica?) on Monday.

Richard - I think it is a very good idea to leave it until spring next year.  That gives us all a chance to get our heads around the idea and - more importantly - gives you more time as the brave organiser (you seem to have volunteered!).

I saw Roger Hubbard yesterday and he seems keen on the idea of a trip to Guernsey.

We'll all have to get Weenie Campbell stickers for our guitar cases and smart little Weenie badges (buttons to you colonials over the water) to wear on arrival.  Maybe this kind of merchandising would help the site - that's one for Slack, Waxwing, Uncle Bud, et al.

Michael, I'll ship a box of Weenie Case Stickers to Guernsey whenever it is held -- and if you do happen to hold it next April or September it might greatly increase the odds of hand delivery of said stickers by this colonial.  ;)

Holy sugar Slack... you mean we might actally meet   :-X

Right folks I have visited one nice hotel which I have used before for a blues thing.. it's right on the beach so have a look -

http://www.cobobayhotel.com/

Now, it does get booked well in advance for weddings etc so even now there is a very limited choice of dates which would include the use of a free function room bar so all the keen types could get up and do bit...  possibly even play guitar!!

Now, I must confess I am being rather drawn to the idea of doing this next April... particularly as there only two available weekend dates at THIS very moment for a booking of say 10 rooms and the free use of the function\bar

20-21 October 2006

and

13-14 April 2007
The cost of the rooms is naturally complex as this is Guernsey but are based on a per person per night rate for Bed & Breakfast. that old English cholesterol free  :P fry up I guess!!

Sea view double room 2 people @ ?49 pp pn
Non-sea view  ditto @ ?39pp pn

Single sea view @ ?59 pp pn
No-sea view @ ?49 pp pn

Can I suggest if you are thinking this looks like it's going to happen you post a reply like now and I'll whizz up and stick a hold on the rooms for that weekend before I set sail for foreign climes on Monday afternoon...  8)

Slack if this looks like being a go-er should we move this topic to the main board to get all the publicity we can... we will need it  ;)

The spousal unit has always been interested in this trip -- so that increases the odds considerably.  ;) We do have a tentative big trip planned next year - so we'll see what happens.

Beautiful beach and hotel!

I'd leave the topic put (no one misses anything on WC!  ;) ) and if it is a go-er, we'll hype the event as a "News" item - at the top of the forum... and maybe even a front page item.

I am orff as they say on holiday now.. but if over the next week you keen UK types could have look and see whether the weekend 13-14 April 2007 looks at all hopeful - and, if it does could you pleae rgister you interest here so I could put a hold on the rooms when I get back in week or so.

I appreciate any US contingent can't commit so easily, but for us over here the question is a lot easier.

It's just knowing how weddings are othe stuff take over hotel bookings I think we have think positive if we want to go for this....   :)

I would at least consider coming over for this, as a visit to the old homeland (Scotland actually, last name Knox) has always been a goal of mine.

:o  Pyrochlore, remember Guernsey is not England (or Scotland), it's a strange little island off the coast of France populated by the likes of Richard!  Don't expect anything to be the same there, even the beer. From previous conversations with our host designate I am  aware that we will get a good pint. Also bear in mind Yves offer to bring some Loire wine over.
(As a further incentive for Weenies to join us over there, all attendees will have temporary membership of the Boogie Boys - the worst blues band on the planet.)

In discussions last evening it seems that Gre and I making it to this gathering is a distinct possibility. Please pencil us in for a sea-view double.

And Scratch. Thanks much for the invite. We would love to visit Scratchy Towers. -G-  Probably before the gathering in Guernsey. as we'll continue on from there to Paris. Wow, I'm getting excited about this.

All for now.

Looks like this is going to happen  :-X

Not sure whether I can log on again before I leave here but I am back home for a day on Wednesday before going back to England for 4 days so will endeavour to put a hold on say ten rooms at the hotel and then you guys can book them direct - but at least that would be a concrete start to things.

So as they say watch this space  :D

Quick update.... I have checked all dates as best as I can and nothing seems to overlap so I have put a hold on some rooms in the hotel for 13-14 April 2007.

It's a pain trying to put these things together where accommodation is concerned so what I would REALLY like is if a few keen weenies could make that long distance (time-wise) booking and thereby show some intent which will keep the hotel happy...etc phew etc

The details are all in this thread somewhere, but I will over the next week put a web page together to get all the info in the same spot.

I can't do a lot more until we have some bookings to make it concrete... so, weenies it's over to you  :)
