I'm curious to hear the make/model of guitars that Weenies play.

My main squeeze is a Martin 00-18CTN (Libba Cotten model) -- a short-scale, 00-size, 14-fret, mahogany/sitka beauty. I love this guitar, and it's perfect for fingerstyle folk/blues. I'm thinking of eventually getting a wood body National resonator, such as the Estralita, but for now I am quite content with Libba.

Okay... here goes: National M2 with Highlander, '36 National Trojan, Lowden O35C with Highlander, 50's National Reso-phonic, 50's Kay K-161 Thin Twin, 50's Silvertone Dano U2, Les Paul Spcial Jr (P90s), a couple old Oahu squre necks, Goldtone Banjitar, '52 Fender Princeton, '58 Gibson GA-5 Skylark, & a THD Bilvalve.

On top of that, I'm pretty happy with this current line up. I can get most of the tones I want. Still waiting to see if National Resophonic puts out a wood bodied tricone! I might have to have one of those!? ?:D

OK, I'll play. Right now my playing time, which I happen to have a lot of, is split pretty evenly between these three:
Rounding out the collection and also regularly getting some time:
Hoping I can learn to play (as soon as I figure out how to hold a flat pick):
That oughta give Reso1 a run for his money. Seriously, I feel incredibly lucky to be able to play these instruments and hope to be able to hang onto them in the coming years.

Slack, I'm lookin' forward to that Dodson L-0 (or L-1?).

Howdy:

Well, I can't match all these wonderfull old intruments.

My main guitar is a full sized, cutaway 14 fret Jumbo made in 2001 by Dennis Kwasnycia (Ontario). Indian rosewood back and sides, Sitka spruce top. (this is the one you played Frontpage).

I also own a 1984 rosewood dreadnaught made by David Wren (also Ontario).

In a lesser catagory I still own the first guitar I ever bought, a 1973 Norman? dreadnaught with a bolt on neck. I also I have an Alcivar wood Dobro I know nothing about as I got it from a former roomate in lieu of a month's rent years ago.

I have put photos of most of these in the Gallery section of Weenie Campbell.

Mind you just today I played a beautiful Taylor 30th Anniversery small bodied slot-head with lots of pearl inlay. Sounds wonderful and only (???) $4500 Cdn.

Edited to add (Dec. 20, 2004): Since I posted this I have acquired an 2003 Gibson reissue mahogany/spruce Robert Johnson signature model L-1 (new) and a 1929 Gibson all maple L-3 roundhole, small body archtop. Thick, strongly V-shaped neck.

OK, most Weenies know my main super-acoustical guitars (Nat'l M3 w/spun auto body finish & the L-Jr), so we'll take a look down the wall at the guitar cases.  Inside one is a clear and warm-sounding '30s Gibson L-1, tuned in open D; perched next door is my new (for me) 1919 Cremona finish Army-Navy mandolin (tuned like a fiddle).  The one out on the guitar stand is a well-used 1959 Martin O-15 in open G, mostly for slack-key (hey, it's the same era!) and acoustifying the occasional electric instrumental.

FYI:  National Stringed Instruments is known to have created a single wood-topped Style 1, which may still be (semi-permanently) at a fine store in Montana, I think.  Pro-nuevo-steelmeister Bob Brozman played it in a record he shared with - oh, boy, the memory creaks - Jerry Douglas and David Grisman?

Also, there is a modern wood-body Style 1 type available from a French maker:  http://www.fineresophonic.com.  Stateside Weenies are advised not to visit this site on tax-refund day...

I can't keep up with you vintage freaks, it doesn't help being left-handed or living in the UK.
My main guitar is a NR Style O, used for anything and everything. Occasionally we use wood! - a Martin 0001R, and for amplified, a c. 1950 Silvertone archtop with a slimline pickup through a Champ or Musicmaster.
All this is soon due to change as I am waiting any day now for the word from Mike Lewis at Fineresophonic (qv Jed) that my new german silver triplate is ready from the platers and I can drive to Paris to collect it.

1960 or so Gibson Southern Jumbo.  Sometimes they call it a country and western.  Same one
I've had for 35 years.  I've been thinking about one more suited for fingerstyle for about the last 20 years, but still haven't got around to it.  I also have a small body steel string Yamaha I got for $50; I use it for slide.

My main guitar is a '28 00-40H; when I need those two extra frets, I have a much more recent OM-42.  I tried posting a pic of the 40H...but I'm not sure if I got it right.  Slack or someone please advise.  Thanks!

As for guitars:
1.  An early '70s Martin 00-18 that I got in the late '70s, when everybody else seemed to be playing dreadnoughts, and I couldn't afford.  Now I wouldn't trade it for a dreadnought.
2.  I've also got a strange old half-breed -- it's got both a soundhole and a resonator, and a label something like "B.J. Serenador" -- that I use for slide.
3.  Telecaster, honeyblond with rosewood fretboard.

One oldie - '30 Roundneck Nat'l Tricone;also, Larrivee 00 05 (lovely 12-fretter, looks kinda like an OS Stella); Epiphone Elite L 00 (love this'un, great midrange punch);custom-made (local luthier) 000 42, now 13 years old & nicely matured ; this little lot keeps me busy!..

What style?  Ive seen lots of 1's and 2's, only one each of the fancier style 3 and style 4, though.  I've got an Orpheum Brassband that I love but it's got neck issues.

Shocking but I play a little Mahogany Martin 00-16.? It's all I need right now.? The wife says I shouldn't have more guitars than songs I know.

So, did you get to the mainland yet?  It certainly looks like Finereso is holding their own on that side of the puddle.  I've always wondered - is Mike Lewis the person who made a teeny-weenie Style O for his son about 10 years ago?  I seem to remember that the builder was French.

I play a Collings OM2H. It's pretty much all I need so I'm in the process of selling my other guitar.

Having said that, I am on the look out for a 20s/30s parlor sized guitar just because I've always fancied owning one! A bit tricky to find in England, though.

Yes I just got back from Paris with the triplate - absolutely wonderful job done by Mike.

I believe he has made 1/2 size resos including the one you mention.   A brilliant craftsman and nice guy to boot.

Hi all:

Just back from visiting Bozeman, Mont. which is the site of the Gibson Acoustic Guitar Factory. Unfortunately, no tours the only day I could go. But in downtown Bozeman there's a music store (Music Villa) that has one of every model of guitar Gibson builds, plus a great selection of new Taylors and Martins,

Whilst there I got seduced and now own the Robert Johnson reissue 12 fret short scale L-1. After the jumbo I play most often, the relative lack of bass is weird, and the short scale takes some getting used to. But she's such a pretty little thing.

The store has a wonderful collection of old Gibsons inc. a guitar-harp thing. A must see if your ever in that neck-of-the woods.

That old Gibson L-3 that i mentioned a while back is still availible and I'm to see it tomorrow. I'll let you know.

Well I only have 2 acoustics. My main one is my 1973 Martin D35. I also have a Takamine which I keep around to learn in open tunings. I would love to one day to be able to afford a custom made one.

I've got a few guitars that work well for playing country blues, but the two that I play most are a '45 Martin 00-17  and a '36 Gibson L-00 that I acquired just before Christmas.  Can't seem to keep my hands off these two--very different sounds and necks,  but they're definitely for blues!

I told pyrochlore I'd post some pictures of this one when I got it, so here you go.  The photos actual don't show how rough the finish is, including a couple of repaired hairline cracks in the top--so I didn't get it for a collectible, but to play, and boy, have I been playing it!  This is the first chance I've had to post the pics.

Nice guitar WC.  Mary Flowers '36 Gibson is the best souding guitar I've ever heard..

One favor, please don't double post photos/messages.  We try to watch the disk space and all that.  I'd appreciate it if you would remove one... your choice. ;)

2000 National Reso Phonic Style O that I am about to put a Highlander into (If you are reading this David please let me know how your Phillips with the Highlander sounds. I would be anxious to know)

197something Yamaha SJ-180 that is set up for slide and is great.  (It is full of autographs from some of the world's great blues legends that I have studied with over the years)
Those are my main recording and performing guitars but I also have a slough of others.

Hi Mark. I'm a big fan of Highlander pickups in resonator instruments. I've had Highlanders in 3 different single-cone guitars, and all sound great. Minimal to no EQ required to get a pretty natural sound. Go for it!

1931 National Duolian, for fingerstyle and slide
1972 Takamini D-35, Brazilian Rosewood/ Mahogny, (knockoff by Yairi Sada of MArtin): CB, jazz, all! current favorite, great action and playability !
1969 Martin D-35 Brazilian: needs neck reset, then will sell it, since I love the sound and playability of the SADA more! Oh, Lord... :'(
1972 Suzuki dreadnaught: wil sell. A good inexpensive beginners guitar that has enough  saddle to lower action and improve ease of play for whomever. :D
2002 Dodson cigar-box Mandolin: this is my current mistress, and she is a doll, thank you very much!  :P


I am selling the Martin and the Suzuki. I am looking for a woodbody smaller body guitar for all around play. I loved Alex's re-issue Gibson RJ  parlor guitar. Very sweet, and a joy to play. I love the Norman Blake Martin OM-28, but too damn expensive. Love Slack's Gibson knock-offs too. Love Schmidt  Stella's. Bad GAS. This one will be my usual guitar for CB, will likely have 12 frets. Will use the SADA for jazz, using diminished and barre chords up the neck--until I spring for an archtop!

I love my Martin D-1.  Big growling bass- which is ideal for my bare finger playing.  I dont need picks to get it to rumble.

Also a '33 Duolian which is much refurbished- new neck and plating- but sounds great to my ears and is easy to play for slide.

Seagull 12 string- a bargain purchase and I dont do it justice yet

An Alhambra nylon string flamenco guitar which is criminally underused

A blue, plastic roundbacked Tanglewood electro acoustic which is just the easiest guitar to play I have ever held and considering its humble specification, doesnt sound too bad.  I use it for playing aruond the house mainly- and for learning new stuff because its easier!


And finally- and old Vantage 6 string which is basic, and I have recently shimed the bridge so I can use it as a second slide guitar- when I want more sustain than the Duolian gives me.


On my wish list.....

A small bodied acoustic
A good tricone
A weissenborn....

Been meaning to post about my guitars somewhere, I guess this is the place.  I feel like I am the luckiest guy in the world with my two guitars, but those Fraulini's really get me going.  My main guitar came into my life in 1973, when I was a freshman at college.  I always wanted a 000 for blues, and a few years before, I heard about a new old stock 1966 000-28 at a music store close by, so I got Andy Cohen and Rat to check it out with me.  the guitar was a dog which is why it never sold, but they had a 71 d-28 that was a killer, so as much as I wanted the 000, I got the D, which was OK.  I went to a show in Boston in 73, where one of the performers Todd Kabza was playing a 000 that he said was for sale.  It was a re topped 1959 000-28.  Todd said that a year or so earlier it had been re topped with German silver spruce(at that time I had no idea what that meant, and had herringbone trim added, and scalloped braces(i knew what those meant), so it was made to be a copy of a bone  Herb David in Ann Arbor did the work.  I loved the guitar, and the fact that it was a re topped Martin was like my guitar Hero David Bromberg's re topped martin archtop, so that was cool.  Price was OK, the same as the D, so I sold that to my best friend and bought the 000.  It is a great guitar.  It still had issues, needed a neck reset and a new bridge, and it is only recently that I finally got it set up right.  Pete Langdell at Rigel mandolins put a new fretboard, complete with gorgeous -42 style abalone inlay, reset the neck(that was a huge job, as Pete described the previous reset with words like 'epoxy' and 'dowel' ouch), and a new bridge.  the guitar is a joy, and I have a huge emotional attachment to it.  I have hitchhiked across the country with it, I was playing it when i met my wife, and i will never sell it.  It is going to one of my daughters with the stipulation that she never sell it.  The only time i ever thought of replacing it was about 1977 or so, when Eric Schoenberg at his Music Emporium in cambridge mass had one of the prototypes for Martin's M-36.  that was a great guitar, and I remember thinking that I could always trade the 000 for it, but I assumed that I would also have to throw in some cash, which I didn't have.  I now realize that if I brought the 000 in, Eric probably would have traded immediately!  Needless to say I am glad I kept the 000.  How many 35 year old Braz/German guitars are the out there?

The other guitar I got a few years ago for Bluegrass is a 1997 Collings D2-H, AAbrazilian/adirondack, which of course is an amazing instrument that sounds unbelievable when played with fingerpicks.  both instruments are wonderful, and I am grateful everytime I play them.  I string both with medium gauge John Pearse strings which work great.  Now all I need is a  Calton case for the 000........

IN 1983 I PURCHASED MY DREAM GUITAR-A FRANKLIN "PRAIRIE STATE"
IT WAS MADE BY NICK KUKICK AND SOLD THROUGH GUITAR'S FRIEND
OF SANDPOINT,IDAHO.I HAD NEVER SEEN OR HEARD ONE OF THESE GUITARS,

I have lots of other instruments I've picked up along the way, but these are the main play 'em (almost) every day/week boxes.

These days, I perform mainly with the Estralita, the Larivee DV-09E and the LKSM 12-String - though I have just recently added the Nick Lucas to the on-stage collection.

I use those performance guitars plus the Style-1 Tricone and the Bozo 12-String in the recording studio.

I've been interested in modern Stella 12-String copies - one, the Leadbelly Jumbo type from Dell Arte and the others are a Leadbelly jumbo and a Barbeque Bob style models from a Wisconsin luthier whose name is escaping me now. I played both the Leadbelly and Barbeque Bob versions and have to say I really liked his Barbeque Bob model. Alas, I didn't purchase either of them and I haven't seen a new one pop up yet. However a local store has one of the Dell Arte Leadbelly models so one never knows... a Stella copy may get added to the collection soon.

Yup! That's the guy. I really liked his Barbeque Bob model 12-String which I played at Sprucetree Music when I was in Madison, WI  awhile back. I was very impressed with the instruments.

I have a 1977 Takamine. I forget the model number, but its' from what is often referred to as the "lawsuit series" because it is a pretty faithful Martin copy. The story is that Martin threatened a lawsuit, though I have read that both companies deny that and that Takamine discontinued their best selling acoustic line for purely business reasons. Uh huh...

I don't play it much these days; concentrating on the mandolin. But my daughter's guitar teacher quit bringing his guitar in favor of borrowing mine and a neighbor I play blues with often "forgets" his guitar and borrows mine instead. It plays and sounds great. I will likely never sell it.

Takamine, eh?

When I moved to SF in '72 and started my internship, I had sold my guitar. Got very itchy fingers, so went out and bought a D-35 knock off at Mouse Music:
Brazilian Rosewood burl sides and 3-piece back with mahogany and rosewood, big dreadnought, with SADA on the headstock, and a "Yairi" engraved ont he fitting over the trussrod. Sada Yairi started Takamini, I was told later. Bought and took apart MAtins, and then copied them. A copy so good, of the old MArtins, that Martin certainly took notice!

Mine (SADA)   had the action improved, and I love it. HAd a neck reset on my MArtin Brazilian D-35, and , while it sounds true and has a full rich base, it doesn't play as easily and well up the fretboard as the SADA does.May yet sell the MArtin, but I won't sell the SADA. Plays too well. Sounds too good. IMHO  ;D

Another Weenie with a Sada Yairi? I got mine--a D-35 copy--in a guitar shop in the Causeway Bay section of Hong Kong island in December of 1978. It says S.Yairi on the headstock and has the date 1975 on the inside. Bought it new (paid about $125 U.S. + $35 for a HSC). It served me well during my five years in Taiwan and for another decade in Seattle. One of my daughter's friends has been using it for the past several years. I hear that all it gets are compliments on it's tone and playability. As I'm in NJ, I presently play a Ted Thompson Mahogany cutaway. A great guitar by a little known maker from Vernon, BC.

I can understand selling the Martin over the SADA, which sounds like a close relation to the Takamine given the history. I don't think mine is better than a Martin, but if I sold it I would get far less money than I would need to buy a truly comparable guitar. The replacement cost is far greater than the resale value (at least double, maybe even a factor of 4). With a Martin those numbers would be more in line with each other. It's funny, but the guitar I have played more lately is actually a cheapo Santa Rosa half size with nylon strings. It's one of my kids' guitars. Since I have been playing the mandolin so much, my dreadnaught seems obscenely large. But I have fun with a little "thumpa-thumpa" walking bass line blues on the little guitar.

I have evolved from my 65 Epiphone (caballero) purchased at 14 with paper route money.
My next was a 60's something Madiera big body (Guild spinoff) road guitar, because I found it alongside highway 101 on my way to work in 2001.  High action so it stays tuned in 'G' for slide tunes.
I bought a Yamaha acoustic electric in 2002 for tavern play and easy to move on.
mostly standard tuning.. always goes to P.T.
Next was my " Dean" Resonator in 2003,,, my far and away favorite which stay's in open 'D' almost always,,,, although heavy at 13 pounds, a great companion and hogs most of my practice time,, it usually has to go out to the shop with me because you can't play blues without emotion,,,,so I get a little loud in the house.It also has a fishman pickup in it which is rarely used.

Just picked up a 94 Metal Dobro L11,,now my Dean (stays in D) has to be second,, The "new"
Dobro,, is my fav (stays in G) much easier to finger and play,, what a "ring"!!!

Here's the Cooper list. No photos here as I'm the most technologically inept picker you came across in a week of Wednesdays, but you can see some of them at www.gerrycoopermusic.co.uk (The site's still being developed but it's getting to be quite nice now. All these instruments will eventually be visible.) Nothing vintage, I'm afraid.

Yamaha FG-410-12A 12-string. Big and rumbustious. Bought from a friend about 15 years ago. I think it's about 30 years old. Retro-fitted with a Fishman transducer and tone/volume controls.
Yamaha FG-340-II 6-string. Bought new in 1984. Retro-fitted as above and has had new tuners and a refret. Good for flatpicking and playing in church.
Vicente Sanchis Model 28 classical. Given to me by a friend and according to its label "Hand-built in Spain". Sweet and deep tone, but doesn't get played enough? :(
Ozark 3515 single-cone resophonic. Equipped with a Fishman passive reso pickup. Recently customised with a John Quarterman cone and a 'chickenfoot' cover (thanks to all at Stewart MacDonald!), along with an ebony saddle and bone nut, all of which have greatly improved the tone and sustain. Mainly used for slide but also played 'normally' for Blind Boy Fuller songs. Loud and shiny - what's not to like?
Martin 000-1 My first Martin, bought about 3 years ago. Despite its lowly place in the Martin Order of Merit, this spruce & mahogany guitar is great for blues and when set up for slide with a saddle shim sounds really nice. Fishman Thinline equipped.
Martin 000-28? Myyyyy Preciousssssss...... Bought new just over a year ago, it's the guitar for which I've been waiting all my life, and it arrived when I was at last able to appreciate it. It just sounds great and better every time I play it (on average about 2 hours a day minimum. Oh the joys of retirement, divorce and grown-up kids.. :D.) Equipped with LR Baggs iBeam Active transducer.

I also have an Ozark electric mandolin bought in the early 90s when I was playing in an Irish-rock band, an Ashberry resophonic mandolin (VERY LOUD!) and a genuine Greek bouzouki bought a couple of years ago on the island of Kos. And a big case of harps in many keys and of many makes.

I like all of them, love some, and they keep me off the streets chasin' women. But they do tend to get me into bars, drinkin'. And chasin' women...? :P

Hi GerryC, I wonder could you tell more about how your resonator is strung?  It sounds like you have a compromise in place between heavy gauge for slide and lighter for Fuller style picking, this is of particular interest to me as my digits are too weedy to hold a thumb wrap F chord down on telegraph wires.  Me too on the "technically inept", but sure have fun trying.

For the record the Wolf arsenal is as follows:-

Main axe for conventional tuning picking:- Martin OM - 18V, quite new.
Vastapol axe:- Martin D-35 circa. 1989.
Drop D or rhythm work:- Gibson Advanced Jumbo, quite new.
Rag picking (minded to try in Spanish):- Welker Foden parlour cedar top, quite new.
Experimental tunings e.g. Skip James:- Fylde Orsino cedar top 000 type, pre-1981.
Reso:- National Resophonic Style 0 2001.
Electric:- Epiphone Casino semi-acoustic Korean? quite new.

Nothing vintage as it costs an arm and a leg in the UK.  However a 30's L-00 and a decalomania Stella are among those that got away.  Come the lottery...........

1924 Martin 0-28K (Beauty, also gets lots of play time)
40's Nat. Estralita Reso
1996 Martin 000-28 G.E. (12 fret slot head)
1999 Maton A-80 (Australian Dreadknot)
and a old Gibson A-2 Mandolin (just learning...)
I just sold my electrics that were collecting dust.

Hi, Wailing Wolf. My reso is strung with Michael Messer 'National' medium gauge (013 top) strings made by Newtone. I've only changed to these? quite recently; they are specifically designed for resos and are now, I believe, fitted to all Nationals when they leave the factory. Prior to that (and still on all my other instruments) I used D'Addarios. I find the Messers good for slide; if I'm playing Blind Boy Fuller stuff, I usually use a capo on the first or second fret to give my string fingers some ease - still pretty hard work, but I've found that lighter gauges don't really drive the cone. When I was recording slide tracks for my CD? I used the same gauge of strings but put an 014 on the top. Now that really hurts...

My Main guitar these days is a recently acquired 1935 Gibson made Cromwell G-2 (essentially a ladder braced Gibson L-00). It has that thing that only a 70 year old guitar has and the ladder bracing is great for getting that super mojo tone. I also have a Martin 000-15S and National Delphi. Both hold their own and sound great. I'm just into geriatrics these days.

Has anyone figured out that I play blues?

I don't know about "Main guitars", these are my only guitars.  Whilst I have to admit I would like more, I feel you should only have them if you play them.  For that reason, I have let the odd one go over the years - most recently a Johnson Style 3 Tricone (a very respectable instrument, but I'm not much of a slide player).  I only have three now and am lucky enough to have one of each: mahogany, rosewood and maple.  They are:

Denyer Custom Acoustic:  mahogany back & sides, built for me by Barry Denyer, a British luthier now resident in Germany, in 1976.  With a very rounded body, a bit like an early Gibson L-1, it has matured well and sounds sweet now.

Larriv?e Special Edition Rosewood Parlor: a 2003 model bought on eBay which is still being played in and getting better all the time.  The workmanship of Larriv?es is gobsmackingly good.  Anyone considering buying a new guitar should give serious thought to these Canadian beauties.  Many argue they are better than the big name guitars, but cost substantially less.

Kalamazoo KGN-12: A 1942 model with maple back and sides and a natural top, unlike the usual sunburst of the KG-14 and KG-11.  I bought it from Willie Salomon (www.williesalomon.com) and it is the one in the picture attached to my "Parlor Picker" Weenie ID.

All I need now is an injection of talent...

My girlfriend always complains that when I get with other Blues-nuts we just end up talking in numbers, she's sure it's some kind of autism. But what the hell...
The main ones (for gigging)- 1969 Harmony Sovereign, 1931 National Duolian (for slide) and most recently a new Italia Modial in the most disgusting shade of green I could find (if you going to buy an electric guitar then buy one that looks as loud as it sounds!)
Also sitting in the house I have a 1958 Gibson LG1 (with dearmond pickup) a 2003 Donmo resonator (do a google search for Donmo) and a personal favourite a mid-thirties Kay Kraft.
That'll do.
I am saving for a new ResoRocket though!

My favourite, the one I'd NEVER sell, is a 1980 Maton Messiah Dreadnaught, that I've had since new.
I've worn all the finish off the neck over the years, and I think this is why I treasure it so much. I can see all the hours of playing I've done, recorded almost, in the worn out state of this once spanking new guitar.
(It also sounds pretty good too).

I also have a 1931 National Duolian (w/ orig cone) in good condition.
(Used for slide in Vestapol)

A 1932 Wayne Spider Reso. It has a Bakelite fingerboard and brass frets! Crazy, but it sounds great.
(Used for slide in Spanish)

A couple of  Fender Strats & amps.

Great site btw, I've spent hours reading.
Just love the country blues!

"I'm broke and I ain't got a dime"....so all I've played for the last 10 yrs is my faitheful 32' Triolian, but about five years ago before she passed my astranged Grandma dug my great great grandads little parlor guitar from under her front porch, apparently the ole man played in string bands in the latter part of the 1800's. It's a real beauty. I added a tail piece to relieve the preasure on the top and she's in the shop now getting the headstock re-set. It was converted some years back...years before I got ahold of it....from it's gut string state to it's preasant steel stringed set up. Oh yeah, I installed a soundhole pick-up so it could be heard when I play live, in my acousic trio setting.

Ive owned alot of guitars over the years,most of them Nationals
 but right now I've settled with=

 34 14 fret Duolian It was origanlly brown frost(but some nut along
 time ago stripped it)its all rusted and oxidized,with a nice Mahoghany Vee neck,stays in spanish,

 36 14 fret Duolian (green frost) loudest Duolian Ive heard!
 I keep in open D  >:Dvastapol,


 My main guitar is a 90 Jazz-Blues wood bodied sunburst
 Estralita predesesser(sp?) as far as newer Nationals are concerned
 I prefer the wood bodies,also in D,
 
 1940 Kay Archtop(great slide guitar),open E-flat

My main guitar is nothing fancy, just an old '44 Gibson LG2. One of those war time mahogany guitars with the poplar-mahogany laminated necks and truss rod.

It has a few dings but sounds wonderful to my ears and fingers. This old guitar came to me via eBay for a reasonable price with cracks, loose bracing, and after a little adjustment it has stood solid for me even in the dry climate of Colorado. I love the punch in the mid tones and the deep base. I've come to appreciate the light weight and how you can feel the guitar when you play it. Gosh, It sounds like I'm having an affair with my Guitar!. Well, I guess I am.

I also have a newer '91 Gibson L00. It sounds fine but just doesn't have the feel of my old favorite.

This is my first post to this excellent and informative group.  It seems like a logical place to join in. 

My most played instruments at the present time are my Nationals (a 2005 Style O Replicon and a 2001 Blue Polychrome Tricone) and my trio of Epiphone Bluesmasters.  The Black and the Burst are set up for fingerpicking and the blond for sliding.

Due to an indolent case of G.A.S. and the fact that my wife is a "real" guitarist (she uses Buscarino Cabarets - see www.aerialweb.com) the whole roster is sort of big.  It includes several electric and acoustic basses (I've played bass since '77, but have been focused on guitar for a couple of years since the acoustic blues bug bit me), a Rainsong bass and guitar, a Taylor Cujo, an 1863 Martin Parlor and other assorted goodies.

The attached (I hope!) photo shows my more frequently played guitars...
Back - (l to r)- Gibson ES-135 (Blueburst), Martin OO18-SH, Martin Concept III Prototype (Firemist paint no label, no serial)
Front- Blue NRP Polychrome Tricone (neck and headstock a la M2), Epiphone Bluesmaster, Bluesmaster, Bluesmaster (no Coke - Pepsi!!!), NRP Replicon

My main and only acoustic guitar is a National Delphi with a custom finish, quite similar to an old walnut triolian.
Great for slide in open tunings.
Now  I'm thinking about getting  a flat-top (a Stella?), as a second guitar, to play it in standard more than open and  with lighter strings(tha National has 16-59). Maybe a wood National would be another option.
 I'm looking for a less strident and more organic (wood!) tone, not as "sophisticated" as a Martin, just a good tone with the exact amount of roughness for country blues.  What do you think would suit me better?

Well, I do blues and bluegrass -which is not a problem down under where I live. So I've got a Martin D18VS, which is sensational for just about anything - its loud and sounds better than rosewood, particularly for blues and bluegrass.. I've got a Martin D12-20, which is superb for Leadbelly-ish stuff. Then there's the National Delpi (taupe) which I've got in Open E, and an Australian built Tri-cone (DonMo), which I use in open G. Then of course there'e the local built Weissenborn.

Hang on, what about my wish list? I've got a DeGruchy 12 fret OM Mahogany on order. Casey Chambers uses this Aussie built guitar, and its the loudest on the planet. And I want a wooden biscuit resophonic, a Trojan or the like. Now if my wife asks you, I won them in a poker game......

My standard guitar that I play most is my Seagull Grand (parlor). It hangs on the wall, I don't even have a case for it. For $300 bucks, it's a great guitar. I recently sold my Mossman Winter Wheat 12 string, I have another Mossman Texas Plains, (by the New Mossman owners in Texas)  Beautiful sound , a great player, except it's a dreadnaught, and I prefer a small body guitar. I also have a Framus 6 string guitar/banjo which hangs on the wall in my living room...so I can play it when I want. It has a short scale, a nice player, different too!. I have a Liberty nickle- plated brass resonator...nice tone, and my newest guitar, a National Polychrome tricone. The National has killer tone...it's steel bodied, kind of brash.
Plus my Yamaha Pacifica elecric (which I haven't played in 4 yrs)

One has maple back and sides and is a dreadnought
the other just came UPS and is a sunburst 000.  Don't know how I like it yet as it could use new strings but it has presence for sure but is real green since it was never played.

Blueridge BR-183.

Traded a Tacoma CR-2 for this.  My Guild M-20 (00 size, short scale, all mahogany) was just played too much (practically every day since 1960) and my guitar tech pleaded with me to retire the poor thing before I blew it out completely (needed a neck set, and the bridge was re-atached so many times I had to go with an oversized bridge because the underlying wood had just splintered away, among other problems.  If I fixed the guitar, it would have turned into a different beast).

I looked at Larrivees, Martins, Taylors, and others.  I wanted a short scale 000 or 00, preferably mahogany, to replace the Guild.  I found some I liked, especially the Martin 00-18V.  Two grand was a bit stiff, but I was ready to go.  What held me back was the "stiff" sound (at least compared to the 50+ year old Guild).

I thought I wanted the 1-3/4" nut (fingerstyle), and the 24.xxx scale is more comfortable.

Then I played the Blueridge.  I was amazed.  It sounded more open and resonant than the Larivees and Martin (maybe they would have sounded better in 20-30 years but I'm 50 now...).  The scale was 25-1/2" - I wasn't happy about that, but found the guitar playable none the less.  The big surprise, however, was how the string spacing (1-11/16" nut but rather narrow string spacing) actually felt comfortable.  Everything I had read told me that a 1-3/4" nut would be better for individual string articulation.  Maybe so, but with this Blueridge I can do the "F" chord with my index finger covering the E and B strings and my ring finger covering the A and D strings (middle finger frets the A note on the G string), and the neck is slim enough for me to wrap my thumb around to make the F note on the E string.  I could not do this before (I'm 6'1", so my hands aren't exactly small, but I have a lot of muscle and fleshy palms).  Within days I was playing Piedmont style key of C blues, Ragtimes, and other styles that I knew (intellectually) how to do but could not physically accomplish.  What a rush!

The guitar worked out for me.  Build quality is outstanding.  The only thing that bugs me about the guitar is the insane amount of decorative detail (all flawlessly executed).  I would have paid a small fortune to get a Martin "45" series that might approach this guitar.  It's just too damn fancy.  I would have paid the same amount of money for something that looked more like a "28" series.  Not surprisingly, the BR-183 sounded much better than the less expensive Blueridge models (I guess they put their best luthiers on the top of the line series).

Current guitar line up:  Blueridge BR-183, National Resophonic Delphi, and Guild M-20 (now enjoying a well earned semi-retirement).

I play a koa / sitka spruce 14 fret with a dangerously slender neck that I carved to accomodate my slightly smaller than average hands. This is going to sound weird, but the body is ergonomically designed to be easier to play - it's maybe an inch narrowere on the top of both bouts than on the bottom, so it's more comfortable to play. I also have a late '50s Gibson J-50 and an a 1953 Kay f-hole set up for slide, and a couple of others under construction.

My current main guitars are a 1947 Martin 000-18, a Greven L00v, a Santa Cruz 'Rising Fawn'(which is a 12 fret 000 with dread depth) and a Kopp K-35. The Martin, Santa Cruz and Kopp are the guitars in my photo here. I have just made a deal for a beautiful 1936 Gibson L00, a totally crack free and very clean example. I will have the Gibson in approximately 3 weeks. I also have a Merrill OM-18 custom on order as well as a Greven 00-45 adi/brazilian coming. I am a happy guy these days!!

I think we should try this on Wax's 12-string Stella. Open it up a little. Wax, you can send it to me, I'll hang it in my shed for the winter then bring it to PT in the summer, where we can polish off a case of Anchor Steam and break out the drill. ;)

I think O'Muck's right, many of the best guitars I've tried have been beaten to all hell, cracked, repaired. Maybe look nice now but they've gone through some abuse.

I don't own anything worthy of such alterations myself.

Don't know the song I'm afraid, but I get the idea (who's song is it?). The woman who sold it to me for twenty five bucks was apologetic saying that even though it was beat up it was still a good beach guitar! WAHHOOO!
Should I feel guilty? I booked outa there in a hurry feeling like I'd just pulled the heist of the century. I think it just would have remained hanging unplayed on the barn wall serving as a mouse nest and rotting away. I've given it a nice warm case and three meals a day. Ethical gray zone methinks.

A few weeks ago, I got a message from Tod, the gentleman I bought my 000 from!  He told me some things about it that I had wrong.  I thought it  was retopped by Herb David, but apparently it was Dan Erlewine, and Tod himself did some finish work!  wow, I really enjoyed connecting with Tod again.  He even was kind enough to say that he liked the way I've cared for it.

This past Christmas we were out traveling and my wife and I stopped by a fiddle shop owned by a friend of ours and there was a D35 Guild on the wall.  We walked out with it for a small sum as it needed some work.  It needed  bridge work and had an old crack that had been cleated.  After getting the bridge fixed and a new nut and fret dress, I have ignored many of my other guitars in favor of it. It is very loud and clear.  It is a 1977.

2007 was a good year for guitars.  Besides that Guild, I was also offered a Gibson made Dobro with a slot head and biscuit cone for what some folks paid for it about ten years or so ago.  They apparently bought it "right" back then.  It came with the registration papers intact for the warranty.  It has a black finish and a deep sound.

Let the blues roll on.

At present, and it changes all the time, my main guitars in order of play time are,

Gretsch 6122-1959 Chet Atkins Country Gentleman, brand spankin' new, made in Japan. Not really a country blues guitar :P but without doubt the best "players'" guitar I've ever owned and Chet designed it for fingerpicking with its 1 3/4 nut width. I'm working with a pretty solid singer / songwriter (well this Austin you know, even the taxi drivers and mail delivery folks are singer songwriters), helping him arrange and record his songs. Somewhat to my surprise I'm thoroughly enjoying myself, and strangely I seem to be getting a Clarence White Byrds sound on the country genre numbers. We also do some 'swamp boogie in E' stuff and folk blues things. The Gretsch is very versatile, but it always sounds like a Gretsch, which is a good thing.

Martin 000-16 '95 - for country blues and general mucking around

Gibson J-45 Koa Custom - excels at Travis-style acoustic tunes with its super-solid low end and great action, plus it looks the part.

Tonight I'll be setting up my Fender B-Bender Tele to try throwing in some pedal-steel bends at the singer/songwriter thing this week. It's been in its case for way too long.

The L-00 body design has to be one of the best - not too big and not too small and a really attractive shape.  It looks good in a sunburst and plain.

Sorry, its an LG-2! My old '46 small body ,Maine barn cured, mouse nested in Gibson doesn't have the original neck block not to mention a label, so someone told me they thought it was an LG-0 but upon closer investigation it is indeed X braced and probably had the sunburst removed. WAIT A MINUTE! Does that means it sounds worse?!?

You don't eat what you can't stand 'cause someone else says they like it, do you? I don't understand this fascination with putting down what other people state that they like, or worse, stating that others base their own preferences on those of others (or needing to imply you don't?). We're mostly all adults here, right? Sometimes the younger set behave more maturely than the older set.

I had my converted Kalamazoo KHG-14 for about a year and decided to have the saddle compensated because it is off a few cents at the 12th fret. I took it to Gryphon and was discussing it with Frank Ford and I asked if it might change the sound- I told him the intonation didn't really bother me and that I really liked the sound the way it was. So Frank said don't change it if YOU like it.

My main 4 acoustic:
Larrivee OOO-50 (usually in standard E)
NRP Model 97 Tricone(usually in Spanish)
Kalamazoo KHG-14 (usually in Vestapol)
Taylor 355 (I know- usually in standard at C or D)
Main main electric Bass:
'73 Fender Jazz (bought at a pawn shop in '79 so I could play in a friends Punk band 'cause I had Cello experience :P)
My main 2 electrics:
Gretsch 6120-1960 Nashville
MIM cheap Telecaster
both run through either a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe or a Peavey P100 Bass amp.

The only one I purchased new is the Tricone.

Hey, folks -

This'll be different! I do not play, but regularly hit the pawn shops while doing my Piedmont field work in the SE states - 1969-1980. BUT it was a good idea to carry some DEPENDABLE guitars for recording purposes, for not everybody had one available. To whit:

          1. a 1939 National - very mellow, non-plangent sounding: Dated by Bob Brozman on one of his trips to Oz. Back when I was teaching Biology at a state college/university, I had a student who got #4 in the draft/conscription lottery and did the only sane thing, sold all his personal belongings and went to Canada. I bought the National from him for US$400.00. It's missing the pick guard, whose plastic out-gassing ate away the chrome finish underneath it! As the Broz explained it to me. A small crack in the resonator plate, too. See Tarheel Slim LP/CD cover.

          2. a Gibson SJ - purchased in a pawn shop in Charlotte, NC in 1970... seemed new then. Back then i really didn't know s**t about guitars, but the guy in the pawn shop knew even less than I did! A friend told me to loosen the strings, feel around inside, and mumble something about loose bracing... it worked! Records like a dream, is in tune all the way down the neck, and has lovely, low action for finger-picking. An absolutely beautiful instrument - see Homesick James LP cover, or Honeyboy Edwards liner notes. EVERYone I recorded wanted it!!

          3. a Gibson 335 purchased from my youngest sister's first ex-husband - I also carried a herringbone Fender Princeton amp along as well. Be prepared. And I was!

          4. a Gibson LG that I picked up in poor shape - cracked on one side. Had it repaired and it was my "truck guitar" (I travelled in a van w. two dogs and instruments of destruction, plus recording machines, et al), the one I handed to someone who said, "Oh, I play a little". Henry "Rufe" Johnson was one of the first to benefit: no worries if it got damaged or anything like that. It WAS a Gibson, though, and that impressed folks a bit!

Have a bunch more, Nationals, a.o., with my stuff in storage, but these were used no many a TRIX session and appear on many a TRIX album cover! I have the National and the Gibson here with me right now. Eddie Kirkland played the National on two radio shows in Melbourne, and Eugene "Hideaway" Bridges played the Gibson at an in-store in Sydney! They still "work"!! May the farce be with you all.

I always had to sell the good guitars I built, and just have the rough beater for myself. When someone wanted to see one of my guitars, I was ashamed to show my beater.
I finally decided to keep one of the nicest guitars I've built, and am really enjoying it, and I haven't put a scratch on it yet, it won't be truly mine till that happens.

This is probably a new thread topic but do you talk aesthetics with other luthiers, and if so what exactly gets discussed? Do you talk about furniture makers, like Chippendale at all, or is the discussion pretty much confined to historic guitar models?

Thanks for the nice comments on my guitar guys. I tried to copy the L-00 pickgard as closely as I could, look at Parlor Pickers there, almost identical.
The grand concert guitar is actually an L-00 shape enlarged proportionally to 15" wide at the lower. It has moved the tone range down more into the bass, but is pretty balanced overall. I built it a year ago to have a show guitar, and didn't play it much for fear of scratches, since I wanted to sell it. I'm glad I didn't. It is great for "city-country blues" and old-time, my current interest. The guitar isn't a true blues box, it has too much sustain, not that short thump that most blues guys want.

OMuck, furniture doesn't enter much in luthier discussions, but my taste is in Shaker and Arts and Crafts. You can see that in my "plain and simple" styles.

I've been listening to Ms John Hurt lately, and his deep voice would go good with this guitar. I'm trying songs with that big "round" sound. Do you know "What are they doing in heaven today" and songs like that.

You guys have been a real welcoming bunch, maybe we could talk religion and politics! <g>

Your pickguard reaches up a little bit into the upper bout. Its a more fluid seeming, visually satisfying solution imho. It enters into, amplifies and continues the rhythm of the guitar's shape, keeping the eye engaged and circulating around the face of the guitar. The original shape's more truncated upper form actually interrupts the eyes progress around the face. Congratulations you improved on a classic. A+
What is the luthiery community's assessment of the very early Gibsons, like the large black ones with the carved tops, oval soundholes, rounded headstocks with crescent moon inlays and butterfly pickguard inlays? I don't know their model number and have never seen or played a real one. I think they are incredible looking things however, built with an eye towards projecting anthropomorphic qualities, and indulging in fanciful Tiffany-esque -Art Nouveau design elements. Are these things ever looked at a possible design options by anyone these days, or is design primarily focused on functionality? If so why do you think that's the case?

Thanks, OMuck. I like to play with the shape of the "white space" on the top, with the dark gard. See how the white narrows down as it passes the waist then widens out quickly. It's hard to do it completely, the size of the plastic blank limits what you can do.

There aren't too many of those "Orville" guitars to sample. Those are the ones built by Orville himself, not the Gibson company. You have to go by what someone says they sound like. I'm not too much into arch top guitars. Most builders consider them heavy and not very acoustically lively, but again, there are so few and not many get to try them. Back when I did repairs I would get a teens or 20's L-1 from time to time, and they were interesting, but I never wanted to copy one. The shape is ok, I guess, but when the 30's L-0 & L-00's came along they left the older ones in the dust.

I specialize in L-00's and martin sized 00's

Here goes:     1968 Harmony Sovereign,    2005 Johnson Red Cliff 12 string tuned to standard B, Lead Belly style,     2002 Washburn 12, 1987 U.S. Stratocaster. The archtop in my profile pic was made in 06 by a local luthier, who also made my mandolin and fiddle. It is 22 inches across the lower bout, and hefty! Won't even mention the banjo, as I'm currently looking for a lighter one.

For gigging I use a Martin 000-18GE (Golden Era) guitar with a K & K pickup. I have found this to be a killer guitar with a vintage tone right of the box when brand new. The Golden Era models are a huge step up from the standard 000-18's sound wise in my opinion. The Adirondack top helps a lot. Sometimes I will use my 1942 Gibson L-00 which also has a K & K pickup.
For slide I like a 2005 National Polychrome steel body that has a very gritty tone with lots of sustain. I have a newer thinner steel National Tricone as well but those have a wood well that I think mellows out the tone too much and to me the older model is much more responsive. I use a Neumann KM-184 mic for the reso live.
If it is local gig I also have a Fraulini Angelina 12 string that is a wonderful guitar that has a (guess what?) K & K pickup. I use an LR Baggs DI with the K & K's.
 Oh, almost forgot my National Reso-Phonic ukulele with a koa body that is about ten years old. Audiences love the uke and it really makes for a nice variety when you play a few tunes on it.

Hi Alex, My 1942 Gibson L-00 is one of the instruments that has a Kalamazoo top (but is X braced). These have a binding type ring on the inside of the sound hole like the Kalamazoo's. These tops are a bit thicker than what Gibson used in the 1930's so to me they are not as crisp in the treble and have a warmish tone. Someone told me that the bracing is different than the 1930's L-00's and I would not doubt it. The '42 has a bit more mid bass and a warmer tone than the 1930's models. I have had a couple of 1930's L-00's and to be honest I think I prefer the earlier models with their fast, bright tone but I have had the '42 for quite a while and hate to get rid of it. It has a great look with the black finish and a very yellowed multiple binding top and back. It even has the see through amber tuning buttons that are pretty cool and kinda rare. It is A-Braced spruce top and birch back and sides, It has an archtop back (gibson used the leftover archtop backs on the first few runs) I can only assume they didn?t want to waste  hand carved birch pieces left over after the model changed!

I have played both a '26 and 28 L-1, and both have a lovely tone. The A-braced 26 had a nice open midrange, while the H-braced 28 had more tightness to the bass. Myself, I'd love to have either. Nice contrast to a Stella.

It does sound nice on your video, Jon. And yes, that's the pic of Scrapper with one. I had never heard there was a difference between the A-braced and the H-braced, which I guess means that the two longitudinal braces are splayed and not parallel, eh? I had heard the earliest ones had arched backs, tho'. What a treat to play regularly.

But clearly, the difference in bracing between longitudinal and transverse, yet using similar tone woods, spruce/birch, would make for a very interesting duet. We'll have to try it if I ever get back to PT, Alex.

My main guitar is now my new Gilet OO which is featured in a new thread here. I am at odds as to what I should do with it as it has no pickup in it, I want to do it but it would need a hole drilled in the bottom where a strap holder would normally be. Gerard Gilet is such a purist that he doesn't like pickups in his guitars. Sure it would be best to just have a very expensive mic in front but most venues don't suit that kind of setup. The hole may devalue the guitar by $500 or so. Has anyone some advice as to what I should do. I do have a good LR Baggs active pickup in my Cort that should fit. Or maybe there is a good pickup that does not require any hole at all that you could recommend. Keep in mind that I do play live gigs with the acoustics.

I would suggest, that in the instances where an external condenser microphone isn't practical, you could first try out a sounboard attached pickup, like the relatively affordable Schatten Dualie.

As it is attached on the sounboard on the outside of the instrument, it doesn't alter the instrument in any way.  You'll need an external preamp/ D.I. box as well. The L.R.Baggs Para D.I. has served me well for many years for that purpose. You'll be able to use this setup on any other instrument as well, if needed.

Thanks Pan, I shall look into that, normally I wouldn't be nervous about this but the new Gilet is a work of art and as the years go by it will increase in value unlike most guitars that decrease in value as time goes on. I also don't trust anyone in my area to do it. Maybe Darryl Wheeler would do it. I will call John Morris again and get his advice too.

Here are my guitars.

Gretsch New Yorker, Gretsch Centerblock Electromatic, Hagstrom BJ-12, Dobro Hound Dog.

My main guitar is the New Yorker. The 12 String has been getting lots of playing lately as it's the newest edition. The Dobro was the only guitar I had for a long time so countless hours were logged on that. Now days it stays in open tuning for slide. I have barely played the electric Gretsch. I love it and have a beautiful tube amp but I cant get enough acoustic. I bought it to replace the Gretsch Electromatic that was stolen from my old apartment.

I recently sold the Grestch Electromatic in the the picture I posted above this post. It was the most expensive guitar I owned and I never picked it up. It sounded amazing and played really well....but I just don't play electric enough to keep it around. I'll pick up another electric guitar along the way sometime I would imagine. I mainly play the Gretsch New Yorker and the Hagstrom 12 string anyway. The Dobro actually sounds quite good for a cheapish guitar.

I just ordered one of these for a new parlor - a kay - that isn't projecting as well as the others and  wanted to note that Schatten offers a simple preamp, single and dual model, same price as the pickup. Not sure if I am going to put it on the outside or inside though -  its the same model for both inside or outside but the inside is constructed to run out the widened hole at the guitar's bottom.

I don't have a main guitar at this point, I have about eight cheap ladder braced guitars that get used according to the song I am working on, a gibson Nick Lucas reissue thats usually in the closet as are 2 small model resonators, one of which is a very light wood model that I got to play out with if I decide to do that and two les Paul Specials.

Man, my guitars are pretty humble compared to the impressive line-up here.

I own two acoustics.  First and foremost is a Martin D-16GT I got back in 2004.  I bought just a month or two before going overseas.  I had wanted the rosewood version--I was way into bluegrass picking at that time and wanted as much thump as possible--but had to settle for mahogany because the local music store wouldn't be able to get a rosewood for like 4 months.  That thing has been to hell and back, and looks damn near like it could have been bought in the '60s or '70s!  I had a Fishman installed a few years ago, and the neck cracked once right at the base of the headstock when the case fell over at a bus stop.  I was on my way to a gig, didn't discover the break till I got there, and the damn thing was STILL in tune!  I played a two-hour show with it, then had it glued back together.  They did a great job!  You have to hold it up to the light to see there was ever a break and it plays just as good as ever!  I used to drool over D-28s, and still wouldn't turn one down, but I wouldn't trade that old D-16GT for nothing!  It fits me like a glove.

My other acoustic is an old Harmony Patrician blond archtop, probably from the '60s.  Plays like a dream, especially if you want a Blind Boy Fuller sound.

My electric is a '52 reissue blond Telecaster.  I have a Fender Blues Jr. in the States but it's just too damn heavy to bring over here to Europe.  A few years ago I got a Vox Valvitronix modeling amp and despite being sneered at by a lot of pickers I love it.  It's loud as hell.  I've heard it referred to as a practice amp but I've never had to mic it.  I can approximate my favorite electric players pretty well--Hound Dog Taylor, Albert Collins, and Keith Richards.  If I ever get my Blues Jr. over here I'll definitely have to get some pedals because I'm use to distortion now.

My dream is to own a National Style O, vintage or new, I don't care.  Maybe one day, if teachers suddenly start getting paid what they're worth! :P

I just picked up a Gibson SJ 12 fret new at a bargain price so it plays blues along with my L-00.  Gibson has that blues sound for me.

I never responded to this thread probably because I am too fickle to have a "main" guitar.  The three I tend to rely on the most would be:

1.  1942 Gibson J-50.  Let's just say nothing quite like them before or after. 

2. 1930s Oahu 69K "Nick Lucas" (1st generation).  As the name suggests a Kay Kraft-built guitar with a body that has the same specs as the Gibson Nick Lucas but with a long scale neck.  A big, clean bass presence and loud enough to scare the Hellhound off your trail.  The 1 13/16" nut and 2 5/16" string spread make this one about as good a fingerpicker as there is.

3. 1930s Oscar Schmidt-made Galiano Jumbo.  Lo- Fi as it gets but the larger body moves more air giving it a bit more aggression, bite and oomph than its smaller body counterparts.   Kind of the perfect foil to the Oahu.

I love 12th fret guitars.  I'm lusting after a couple in Recording King's "Dirty '30s" series.  12th fret, parlor size, slotted headstock...yes, ma'am!

i have a Pluto guitar and a hand made guitar(instruction given by me to the carpenter) whose neck (a hobmer guitar's neck)broke  stupid me !! i dropped it the ratio of neck to body was about 10:1  1st time  i made it  . Planning to learn so i can play and if i get money ill buy me a Harmony Sovereign H1203 Guitar

1. A 1966 custom Harmony Stella -- restored/customized for a school senior project: solid Birch, ebony bridge, tobacco sunburst, tuned to Vestapol.
2. A 1940s Regal "McKinney" parlor: solid Spruce/Birch, rosewood fingerboard/bridge, tuned to Spanish.
3. (soon to be) Mid-thirties Grand Concert Stella: solid Spruce/Mahogany, pyramid bridge, tuned to Standard.
4. Gretsch G9241 Alligator Spider resonator: laminate body with Mahogany veneer, Mahogany neck/mother-of-toilet-seat veneer, tuned to low Standard with 13s.

At the moment I own something like 10 guitars but have been playing, almost exclusively, my wife's Fraulini Loretta. It works for just about everything I play: blues, old time backup, fingerpicking, sock ryhthm...even a little flat picking. It sounds like something on an old 78.

If she didn't let me play it, I'd be ordering one for myself.

Time has moved on somewhat!   I have the D1 still and still like how it sounds.  The duolian doesnt get much play.

Main guitars now are my Stella Gambler, Champlin L-1 (made by Weenie member Nobocaster) and Regal Le Domino.  Along with a Harmony Stella 12....   I am fortunate.  And never expected to have such a collection when I posted all those years ago!

I was thinking about how your "main guitar" can change over the years. External events recently caused me to switch to a guitar I had not played a lot in the past. Firstly, my Guild has cracked back and top and may never be the same. Second, my Tonk American bridge is lifting and needs repair. I think it's the climate up here in the Mohawk Valley, Adirondack foothills.

The third thing that happened was meeting Andy Cohen at a recent house concert, and playing with him after the show. We touched on Gary Davis, Frank Stokes, Merle Travis. It was great to be able to sit down with him and run through several songs, signature licks and generally natter on about our mutual interest.

The guitar I took with me was a Gibson J-45 koa-back custom shop instrument I bought in Austin. I grabbed it because I thought it might suit the material. Wow, it sounded- and played great backing up Andy's more ancient Gibson J-45.

So it instantly became my 'new' main guitar, for the foreseeable future, which may or may not be a long time. Pic below, plus a shot of Andy with one of the two Washburns he had with him.

I'm primarily a mandolin player but my primary guitar is the 67 Martin D-18 I bought in 1969. That's what I use in public on the rare occasion I'm not playing a mandolin. But I also love my two Collings. An OM2HG and a 12 fret 000 slothead. And I also own my late brothers Gibson 12 string. It's from sometime in the early 60's and a real cannon.  It has a neck like a baseball bat but I wouldn't change a thing.

My main guitar is a New Era Roy Book Binder signature model built by Tony Klassen. That's the one I play everyday now and it just keeps getting better. I also have a deep bodied 2001 Tacoma PM15 that I use for occasional solo/duo gigs.

I don't have an all-time fave - I go mad on one guitar for a few weeks - then it goes back on the wall and another takes over!

I also have an Aria ASA-18 in my bedroom.

Two are Lin Hong versions of Recording King models but I have fun faked one as a Stella and the other as a Kalamazoo.

Typical of me to fake up a cheap guitar as a cheap guitar.

I like my Jim Dandy.

Added a tailpiece cos I had one spare for purely aesthetic reasons.

I've seen a few posts about sides splitting.

How would you rate the Jim Dandy against a high end Martin or Gibson?

Dont know - never owned a high end guitar!

Nearest I got to a Gibson was a Kalamazoo KG14.

Most expensive guitar I've ever had was a Beltona Tricone.

I think I paid £1900 for it from a shop.

I sold for a few 100 quid less after about 5 years.

This was in the days before China - my Johnson Tricone was £230.

From my post on the first page of this thread, it's still a Martin 000-16 mid-1990s acoustic. It's nearly 30 years old and just gets better every year.

On electric it's a 2005 American Strat Deluxe. I'm currently focusing on lead improvisation and music theory and the Strat is #1 for learning on and gets more practice time, but the Martin is equally loved.

I have 13 guitars at present but those two get 99% of my time.

I just looked back to 5/17 to see what I considered my main guitar at that time. My wife's Fraulini Loretta of the ten guitars I had then. I'm now down to maybe 6 and am playing my very own Fraulini! A truly great Angie...I could unload pretty much every one of the others and feel comfortable in any musical situation with just that guitar. Love it! Thanks Todd.
