Title: Euroweenie 2010
Post by: blueshome on October 02, 2009, 02:56:30 AM
Spoke to Richard this morning about next year's euroweenie gathering - we are proposing Friday/Saturday 19th/20th March, (later we are into Easter hols, earlier we clash with an EBA event). We are hoping to return to the New Forest depending on venue availability.

Yes indeedie, we are on the case or at least on the net searching for a venue  :)

I might need to recruit a hotel scout for an initial look before coming over to have look myself so watch this space and of course any ideas, suggestions welcome :)

:) Okeh you UK weenies time to pay attention....

First note the date of next years extravaganza - starting Friday 19 March which gives two evenings and the whole of Saturday for whatever you fancy  :-X

I have trawled the net\hotels around the New Forest and have to report that it looks as thougth the The Crown in Lyndhurst looks to be really the only one having both function room and parking. Somewhere plusher would indeed have been nice but that comes at a price, in fact almost double in this part of the world  :o

So are you all happy for me to try and do a deal on room rates ???

Please reply to this thread to confirm your interest and I will contact the hotel next week to sound them out.

Any other suggestions, please do say.

Thanks a lot for your efforts Richard.

I was planning on staying at the same place as this year which is just 5 minutes' walk from the Crown, the only reason being price.  But if you can get a mega-deal on dirt cheap rooms at the Crown, I will be easily swayed.

I'm already looking forward to seeing everyone.

Should be fine for me.

And I shall bring a Uke...

Presumably they will secure your special room Richard, with some noisy youngsters enjoying themselves in teh room above?

Looking good and thanks Graham for the offer, let's see how many we are going to get although it's quite nice to go all acoustic.

NS... I hope not, anyway by now whoever it was has probably gone blind... was it the same one as at Bluesweek  :o

That's more like it, Simon. You've come over from the dark side. I remember Graham had a uke this year - that makes 3.  If Richard forgets about banjos and Blueshome sees sense, we'll soon have a ukulele orchestra of our own.  rick218 has a tiple, so he'd be welcome as well.  If only I had some musical ability, I'd be writing out arrangements of some really heavy stuff from the likes of House and Patton for us to perform on ukuleles ...  ;)

Well, after hearing Alex's description of endless rounds of Beatles tunes played by a house full of Weenies around the dining room table in 11 this year at PT, it gave me pause to read the discussion here as well. Must be contagious across the ethernet.

I suppose we all become too senile to handle 6 strings sooner or later? Or maybe hackers implanted a ukulele virus on Weenie Campbell that actually infects the human brain?

Perhaps the ukulelephiles will soon force a vote to change the instrument held by WC in the Weenie logo?

AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!

Right, I have spoken with the hotel and in theory the dates are OK.

They will be confirming this to me along with room rates hopefully tomorrow, at present the suggested rate for a single room is ?70, little if any increase over last year?

I will update as soon as I know room more.

Look on the bright side - a CanuckBuck buys a lot more $US and more GBP than it did at this time last year. But will it's strength last until April? If you are serious, you should start hedging right now! Remember the valuable $US FX advice that I gave you (and you probably didn't take) last June.

Oh girls, 'eh truble at mill  etc  >:(

The Crown are playing hard to get,  as you can see from the email. Wot a little tease etc

Quote
Our Gloucester Suite is available at a discounted price of ?75.00 Friday 18th March  from 4.00pm
With the understanding music will finish at 10.30pm prompt, as we have to be mindful for other guests above the function room.

Saturday 19th March ?100.00 from 10.30am till 10.30pm. Usual Rate ?275.00

Overnight accommodation ?65.00 single in single rooms B&B Twins ?45.00 per person sharing a Twin.B&B.

Personally, I feel the Gloucester Suite (Surely they mean room. Ed.) ain't worth it particulary with an imposed 10.30pm curfew - remember last time they even came in to borrow (steal) some of out chairs\tables as there weren't enough for the nuptuals next door?

I will reply politely, but leave the matter  hanging as the actress said to the bishop and meantime go see what else there is on the net even if it means a trip over next month.

Any alternative suggestions for somewhere southern England within 15 miles of an airport and motorway, let's have 'em please  :)

I shall have a think about other places again.

I agree that the rates they are asking are a bit steep - especially with a 10.30 curfew, which is very early.  Id be amazed if they stopped wedding discos at 10.30...

Whilst I think of it, there is this place, but the New forest it ain't! It's the place that Sonya has used in the past, rumour has it that it's had a big facelift in the bedroom dept, I expect they would do a deal on rates and a room.

Hmm not very convenient for anyone Im guessing- and presumably Bristol is nearest airport?

Its been nice to have relaxing surroundings on weenie weekends- so it would be a shame to be in Swindon.  Sometimes you need some trees, or the sea rather than a dim room with old guitars and bearded men!
Title: Re: Euroweenie 2010
Post by: Parlor Picker on October 20, 2009, 01:19:57 AM
I'll go with the majority decision (within reason!), but still favour the New Forest again, which should be better than downtown Swindon.  Norfolk Slim has local knowledge (albeit possibly a little outdated, as he moved away), as do Bob Long and Natterjack, who are local lads, so maybe they can come up with some ideas.

I haven't been near Romsey for at least a decade but seem to recall a fair number of hotels there. I guess, given the location, they'd be somewhat pricey.
Title: Re: Euroweenie 2010
Post by: Norfolk Slim on October 20, 2009, 04:14:30 AM
There must be a stack of hotels with space in them during march around Bournemouth- but sorting the wheat from the chaff (and there is some very serious chaff!) would be tricky...

Closer to my old haunts, the St Leonards Hotel might be worth investigation- still only 30 mins from soton airport, though certainly not as picturesque as the forest (its on a dual carriageway...)  Close to Ringwood and all sorts of country parks and things though.  Somewhere where shops and food are within walking distance would be better though- and I have no idea what their rates are...

Or even Wimborne Minster...  http://www.thekingsheadhotel.com/

I have to declare however, that these are all particularly convenient for me and are suggested on the basis that I know of them, rather than because they will be the best options!  I shall leave it to others to make a more objective assessment...

I would just like to add a few words in favour of the South Marston Hotel at Swindon. It has very good transport links, it's just off the M4 ( easy links to M5 / M6 for  the NW & SW ), it's easily accessable from the North & Midlands ( M40, Oxford ring road, A420 ), Bristol Airport ain't that far and Heathrow is just down the M4.

Sonya has organised roughly two open mic acoustic blues weekends a year there, for some years, the staff are friendly and we've jammed into the early hours on each occasion, with no problems and at very reasonable cost.

It would also be nice to encourage the new hotel management into thinking that these 'Blues Weekends' are a 'Good Thing'

There is also the possibility of recruiting more Weenies from the usual 'Swindon Blues' attendee's.

I will leave everyone to ponder on these thoughts.

Graham

I am still in favour of New Forest and have rung a couple but at the very mention of musac they throw their hands in the air in horror  :-X

I mentioned Swindon to see what the reaction would be and it was predictable having been there myself, now if it were to be transported..

The Crown have yet to respond to my email so meantime let's keep looking.
Title: Re: Euroweenie 2010
Post by: Parlor Picker on October 21, 2009, 02:11:33 AM
I've never been to the Swindon event, but I understand a few people were not too keen on the venue/location.  I still favour the New Forest if possible.

Also, whilst we always like to attract new Weenies to the fold, as I understand it, we are not trying to put on a large scale event.  The Euroweenie Weekend is an opportunity for some of us "regulars" to actually meet face-to-face, rather than in cyberspace.
Title: Re: Euroweenie 2010
Post by: Richard on October 21, 2009, 12:57:59 PM
PP a sage reply as ever, I think in retrospect we must try and keep it Hampshire way.

No disrespect to the other gatherings but my original intention in starting the weenie event was to be slightly more social than a never ending open mic and besides, in all honesty the regular weenies do come over as a slightly different breed  :-X
Title: Re: Euroweenie 2010
Post by: Norfolk Slim on October 22, 2009, 03:42:40 AM
I'm inclined to agree Richard.  Weenie events seem to have a rather different character to some of the others many of us are familiar with- and thats a good thing.

Good news.......

But first the bad, The Crown didn't want to know, so they have been forcibly abdicated  :o I suspect the truth is they didn't want us!

Trying to find somewhere is not too bad untill the mention of live music and blues then all communication seems to fizzle out. Wonder why?

The good news is that I am on the track of a place somewhere New Forest way and they say they will send rates, I will update as and when.

Tell them you're going to be playing acoustic folk music. Just don't tell 'em it's Black folk's music. They hear "blues" and think wailing electric instruments with pounding drums. I'm sure their envisioning a parking lot full of Harleys.

Certainly seems odd that theyd be bothered by middle aged bearded men with acoustic instruments. I can understand concern about mics, strats etc- but not our stuff ::)
Title: Re: Euroweenie 2010
Post by: waxwing on October 22, 2009, 03:10:04 PM
How can they tell via email or over the phone that you are a bunch of middle-aged bearded men. I'm tellin' ya. These people have selective hearing and very different sensibilities. They are thinking liability, first and foremost. The word "blues" is a liability, they don't even hear the "Middle-aged bearded men playing acoustic" that comes before it. Just tell them you're a "family gathering" playing "folk music" and they'll be all "whales and fairies and a-hey-nonny-nonny" and you'll be in. Trying to reason with them and get them to see the world as you do is a losing tactic.

After a lot of effort I have found this place, I have no idea what it is like so if anybody knows it or lives near I would really appreciate some feedback.

http://www.oxfordhotelsandinns.com/OurHotels/SouthLawn

The rates are as in their email to me, I don't think it's any more than last years hotel and in fact for a double with two sharing it works at ?60 per person including Dinner which can't be bad - or can it! An opporunity to give the little lady an insight into the genteel workings of country blues...

Quote
We can offer you twin/double rooms to include Full English Breakfast, Table d?hote Dinner and VAT at ?120.00 per room per day subject - that is for two people.

With regard to bed and breakfast rates this will be ?85.00 per room per day for two people sharing ? our normal tariff is ?100.00 per day.

For single occupancy the rate for Dinner, Bed and Breakfast will be ?78.00 or for Bed and Breakfast the rate will be ?72.50 per person per day ? normal rate is ?85.00.

If you are only having a Bed and Breakfast rate there will be a charge of ?95.00 per day for use of the Function Room but if you have Dinner, Bed and Breakfast the rate for the Function Room will be complimentary.

Now, I really need some instant feedback to let them know if we want to go ahead, so can you please give it some urgent thought over the weekend and let me know what you think.

NS, good point.

Right, let's decree that we will all book to include meals so that for a single it means the meal is only six quid  :-X what can it be like!

Obviously I couldn't promise the hotel exact numbers but I got the impression they were hoping for half a dozen rooms out of it, so anybody out there who thinks they will be booking can they register their interest.

Thanks..

You've prompted me to finally get round to it as well....  I'm booked.

My playing skills (such as they are) are becoming decidedly rusty due to family circumstances (new arrival arrived last Friday) but I should have time to brush up something weird for March.

I need to see whether the baby will tolerate my trying to figure out Kid Bailey, or whether I need to stick to "twinkle twinkle little star" in her presence.

My little boy has taken to muting all my strings with his sticky jam encrusted hands unless I play nursery rhymes...

I might even figure out some lyrics for a self penned effort, for which I only have music currently, in time for March.  Probably not though- everything I come up with sounds silly so far- and ive not come up with much!

Not before time. Always excuses..... babies, jam on the strings, wife telling you to shut up........ Look forward to hearing your compositional efforts.

Well NS (or should it be NF, for Norfolk Frisky) the best of luck with that new addition, you will now find out what it's really all about, having just the one will seem like heaven in comparison :-X

And PP it's not the broom cupboard for you, it's the coal shed.

Well, being a Yorkshire lad I'll feel right at home.  Rick Sellens (who can't make it to the Weenie Weekend in March as he'll be in New Zealand - weak excuse if you ask me) tells a story about there being an old National tenor guitar in his family when he was younger. Nobody knew about Nationals in those days and apparently they used to keep it in the coal box.

And Parlor Picker: when you say 'coal box', I presume that's just posh Yorkshire for 'bath'?

Aloha,

Stuart,
In the case of the area of the midlands (W.Yorkshire) where Parlour Picker grew up, a bath was normally of galvanised iron and used once a week in front of the fire upon which the kettle for the water was heated. You know nothing down in the Deep South where you've had indoor plumbing since the Romans came. (Don't know what a coal box is but Rick is from deepest Sussex so it may be something there.)

Bob,
Great that you've signed up, it wouldn't be a party without you.

That would be funny if it weren't actually true! That's exactly what we did when I was a kid.

Eeeh by gum, it's grim up north....

I've said it before, anything north of Cheltenham is foreign and so I can believe all I hear about coal scuttle Nationals. And, taliking of Nationals (bows down) I didn't know that Kalamzoo made a resonator, so I shall be intrigued to see the new Marshcat toy.

And, Bob, look forward to seeing you - it's the fact you have booked in that I gets me, you can't live that far away unless you are thinking of serious imbibing!

Serious imbibing? No, I'll just have a few beers and pull quietly on a half pint of White Mule in a brown paper bag stashed in my gunny...

I'm thinking of bringing some Nationals and some Dave King guitars for a little display as a shameless sales promotion....

The way round this is to be up front - Bob can give a short presentation with demos of the various NRP and Dave King guitars he brings. It would be informative at least, and given Bob's polished presentation style (especially after his half-pint of white lightnin), enjoyable.

We seem to have the making of a programme now.

Bob's presentation and demo of his wares.
The Prof has offered a workshop on Lonnie Johnson.
Bunker has offered to display and describe some of his collection of material from the 60's.
If anyone would like it, my son Mike (who runs a professional studio) has offered to make a short video presentation on techniques for recording acoustic guitars, types of mic, etc.

Guilty as charged and a convicted hypocrite as well. I've a bee in my bonnet about getting apostrophes right. Having said that, I take you haven't had a very busy day?

Anyway, I won't modify the post Stuart. The evidence thus remains on file to remind me and other miscreants. I hope this means I escape writing  500 lines in detention as the writer's cramp would make my playing worse than it already is.

NS, there's service.

The plan was for a communal meal in the evening at say 7pm certainly for the Saturday, and I think the same will go for the Friday night as well. I will get there probably mid afternoonish on the Friday and I understand the "room" is available if wanted it.

The hotel have so far been very friendly (unlike the last...) as seem to want to please, I would guess it may be a little faded but so what if they are happy to have us, we can but try.

Young Phil has a program of sorts and unless anything else crops up we are, like Thuderbirds... go  :P

I've now been prodded into action so here goes. Sorry if it appears too organised but I'm sure weenies know how to change that.

Friday
2.00-4.00pm. Turn up and have a beer and a strum.
6.30pm drinks
7.00pm Group dinner
8.30pm Lucky(!!!???) dip for Saturday groups. Followed by jam/performance till late

Saturday
Congregate 11.00am-ish
11.30am Bob Long - presentation of NRP and Dave King guitars
12.30  Lunch
2.00pm Short talk by Alan Balfour (Bunker Hill)
3.00pm Lonnie Johnson workshop by Allan Jones (Professor Scratchy)
4.00pm Lucky dip group rehearsals??
6.30pm More Drinks
7.00pm Another dinner
8.30pm Luck dip performances followed by jam/performance till late

Apart from adding more drinks sessions, that's about it but if anyone would like to contribute a short presentation/workshop I'm sure we'll be able to fit it in for the price of a glass of something liquid and white for Richard (not milk!!).

I'm sure we can sort this out. What flight are you on? The baggage handlers can be bribed to give the b$^%*o extra special treatment - not 5-string but 5-piece.

After much discussion (about 5 milliseconds) the committee has decreed that anyone bringing a uke will be fined 1 round of drinks; a b$%^&o will incur a 2 round penalty.

Well, the fourth Euroweenie Weekend has come and gone in a flash and, I?m sure it?s fair to say, a good time was had by all involved. It was great to meet up with old friends and to make a few new ones as well. The hotel was very welcoming and helpful this year.

I arrived early on Friday afternoon, immediately spotting Blueshome unloading his car. I was then conscious of somebody at an upstairs window making rude signs at me. It could only be one person ? Richard. I had intended to go for a walk around the local nature reserve to do some bird watching (hi Wax!), but the rain was lashing down, so I had to miss out on that one. I did manage a walk on Saturday and Sunday mornings, though.

We all gathered in the bar in the early evening before going in for dinner. Not without some encouragement from me, Richard managed to engage in some friendly banter with the hotel staff (fried eggs and gravy ? don?t ask!).

After dinner, we adjourned to the function room (kindly provided free-of-charge by the hotel) and Norfolk Slim was pushed on stage first to show off his newly acquired Fraulini 6-string, which he did in great style. There then followed a series of performances from the likes of Marshcat and his playing partner in Delta Echoes, Richard Scruton (who does not seem to have a Weenie soubriquet), Diamond Dak, Prof. Scratchy, Blueshome, Bob Long, Harvey and Slo-Blo.

Scratchy had two obscure guitars with him, namely a Vivitone 6-string, which had F-holes in the back (!) and a stupendous 12-string of no known type, which had therefore been named ?Boris?. Diamond Dak played a Dave King acoustic and a newish NRP single-cone instrument, which sounded remarkably like an old National.  I thought Bob Long?s ?Katrina? Dave King model had an excellent sound as well.  I accompanied Blueshome on one number on my Larriv?e Parlor and played my recently acquired Pono tenor ukulele with someone else ? who was that unfortunate person? I can?t remember. My trademark Kalamazoo was put to great use the following night by the good Professor.

During the evening, lots were drawn for playing partners in the performance on Saturday evening, more of which from special guest, Bunker Hill, when he does his resum?. Bunker arrived on Saturday morning, and it was great to meet him in person at last, as we?d been aware of one another on the blues scene since back in the 1970s. Saturday also saw the arrival of the ridiculously talented Lewy C ? Marshcat?s partner in National Steel.

OK Bunker, it?s over to you?

Off to Madrid to do touristy things and get wet, so just time to say what a fine weekend it was, spent with some extremely fine folks. Lots of highlights - like getting to meet Bunker Hill in the flesh at last! Also the bottomless glass of red wine purveyed by Bob Long on Saturday night! Getting to play Lewis's Style O (even if I did fall off the end of it courtesy of the aforementioned glass of wine)! And a special mention, I think, for Mr Slim from Norfolk, whose confidence and know-how has grown and grown from one Euroweenie to the next. Thanks to Bobalong both for the red wine and for his ability to make a party go with a swing by suggesting ensemble numbers. Thanks to Parlor Picker for letting me play his trusty Kalamazoo. And above along thanks to Richard and Blueshome for making it all happen again, and to everyone else for their fine music and fine company!

How does a Vivitone sound?   I remember seeing mention of them in an article about Lloyd Loar many years back, but I never heard one and I'm a bit curious about how the unusual design altered the tone of the instrument.

Of course...  How could I forget Derek?!  He was actually present at my first ever performance in front of real people, some years ago...

Apologies for the tardiness with my half of the report. Tomorrow I'm taking the day off work to catch on "personal matters" and this will be the first.

Just added three snaps taken on the coast near our hotel in Milford-on-Sea. None of old geezers playing guitars, but they help set the scene for those who weren't there (and those who were too lazy to walk down there...).

Blueshome kindly agreed to collect me from the 10.30am train at Brockenhurst. After a fifteen minute or so wait he drove up. There were two exits and he had been waiting at the other! Fortunately he had the good sense to investigate the possibility of another one, something that never occurred to me given the "minor" nature of the station facility.

Arriving at the hotel I was shepherded into a spacious function room where groups of twos or threes were in earnest practice for the evening concert. My initial impression was of walking into one of those 60s Charing Cross Road guitar emporiums, instruments of all models and age were either on display or being played. The next half hour or so I spent trying to match Weenie screen names with actual names and not getting them confused which, at the outset, I failed in miserably.

My sole knowledge of the guitar is rooted in a 340 page general history of the instrument entitled "The Art And Times Of The Guitar" published in 1969. Bob Long's extremely lucid presentation detailing the manufacture and history of the National and Dobro and the various cross-pollination within the two concerns had me Googling the topic on my return home.

A beer and sandwiches lunch was provided to sustain one and all prior to my burbling on for about an hour about the life and times of published blues research in Britain circa 1941 to 1963. Less said about that the better.

There followed a Lonnie Johnson workshop conducted by the good Professor. As a non-musician, and "outsider", I found his methodology absorbing as he took his "students" through various LJ chords and even brought some levity to the proceedings with his naming of a strange G chord up the neck as "Colin". The entire session was committed to video and maybe copies could be sold with the proceeds going to sustain Weenie Campbell.

The evening performance has been discussed and photos made available and there's little I can add other than to say there was a grand finale with all musicians on stage performing just for little ol' me. Thanks chaps.

I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend as, I would hope, did the three wives who were present. Well done Richard and Blueshome for organizing an entertaining and educative weekend.

A late post as I went on from the Weenie Extravaganza to play a jazz gig (drums you will be relieved to hear) and have only just returned home.

Great to see you all again and in particular to meet finally BH. Plus I think, a word for Derek who travelled down from the frozen north of England in his horseless carnage, the poor animal was knackered.

I have a recording of the great event, I'll do some editing for downloads etc and include the Prof's excellent Lonnie J workshop.

And what a surprise to learn of PP's other interests, leanings, hidden talents and photographic acomplishments, you have no idea where that boy has been with his Box Brownie  :-X

Finally, as to the hotel... any comments? Do you think we should go for it again next year? I guessed when I booked it that it would be a typically faded English glory, but I don't think the place could have been much friendlier ubnlike last year.

Thanks again for coming and I'll get editing shortly.

The editing of the Prof's workshop video is proceeding apace and should be complete by the weekend. It will be available only to Weenies and not posted publicly here or elsewhere at the Prof's request.

Bunker Hill glosses over his talk, but we all found it fascinating and enjoyable. He even had documentary evidence of published writing on the blues in Britain as early as 1941.

I was particularly intrigued to hear how BH first got into the genre. He said he was at a friend's house to listen to the latest pop singles and the friend's father was a jazz fan. When he put on an LP called (if my memory serves me well - please correct if necessary) "Blues in the Mississippi Night", he was captivated, not so much by the music, but by the social commentary and apparently alien culture.

The rest, as they say, is history. Alan Balfour, aka BK, is one of our most respected commentators on the music we all love. It was great to meet him in person, having been aware of one another on the British blues scene since the 1970s. As he reminded me, I even subscribed to a magazine he helped issue in that decade.

Blimey PP, spare my blushes. There are those far more qualified than I for the ?one of our most respected commentators on the music we all love? accolade, but is taken in the spirit it was made. Thanks.

"Blues In The Mississippi Night" was reissued by Castle Communications as part of a three CD box set which also included its two Pye-Nixa label mates "Murderers Home" and "The American Song Train". Each CD used the original covers and back liner notes including a huge booklet authored by Neil Slaven. It was my intention to bring it to the event but only remembered when I was Brockenhurst bound!

The recent death of author and broadcaster Charlie Gillett rekindled memories of my first attempt at writing for publication. In 1967 I had produced a lengthy and enthusiastic appraisal of Lightnin' Hopkins, one that I was very proud of. This I passed to Charlie. Whilst engrossed in Charlie?s American music magazines he patiently read my gushing screed. He handed it back to me and the horrified look on my face must have been a picture. Charlie had thoroughly "blue pencilled" it. "Less is best" he said. He went on to explain that he had removed all the "flowery language" and excessive over use of "adjectives" on the grounds that, rather than adding authority to my writing, exactly the opposite was being achieved. Although my ego had taken a huge dent I put a "Less Is Best" sticker on my Olivetti portable typewriter. This was still in place when I moved into the Gillett?s basement flat in 1969. It brought a wry smile from Charlie.

As usual, I digress.

Thought I ought to add my tuppence worth...

Hotel was good Richard- certainly be happy to be there again.  Shame to miss out on a pre strum Chinese or whatever, but we can live with that.  Be nice to have slightly better access to cold beer etc but im not sure what they can do about that short of selling us a case and lending us a fridge for the function room!

Musical highlights?

I thought that Phil's Rock me Baby on the 12 string was great- really solid sound and driving yet relaxed groove.

Marshcat's foray into hawaianish twiddly flourishes in one number (cant remember which one it was!) was good fun, and his blues slide subtle and wonderfully understated as ever.

Realisation late on Saturday night that Scratchy's deep south / celtic drawl is perfect for Lightning Hopkins numbers- there's something about the profs vocal tone which is very similar to Sam, and worked brilliantly.

Andrew getting off his arse and having a go...  Whilst not actually playing a full song, the stuff he did play and sing was incredibly cleanly played for such complex stuff.  I know that when I'm playing in front of people, my fingers just wobble too much to play material that intricate cleanly.  For those not there he tackled a couple of Blind lemon numbers.  I think, Andrew, you just need to practice actually performing the numbers- i.e. just sitting down with the specific intention of playing and singing them all the way through as if performing.  I find its only that process (often through posting on the back porch) that really irons out a song to make it fully performable- ensuring that ive really got the lyrics memorised well, the guitar part organised, and I know what Im going to do next and where Im likely to get into trouble...

Anyway- roll on next time...

Thanks for the reports, guys.  I had noticed in a couple of the photos that Andrew was playing out, the first time I'd seen him do that--good on you, Andrew!  I've only ever been to one event with Prof, at Pocklington one year, I believe, before I knew he was the Prof!  I hope to run into him and hear him again on one of these trips to England.  It's great to see photos of Phil and Simon and Grahame and Richard playing, as well as other folks I've not yet met.  It does sound like a great time, and a nice size, too.  It would have been great to hear Bunker Hill's talk and meet him in person, too.  I know there are a lot of logistical considerations in putting such event together, low-key as it may be, and congratulations to all concerned for figuring out how to make it happen.
All best,
Johnm

Slim, thanks for the comments! Great to see all you guys again.

The 'Hawaianish twiddly' bits probably featured on "The Old School" (John Hiatt). I'll see if I have a postable recording of it.

Meanwhile, here's 'Furry' Lewis Cohen and me having a go at Patton's "Screamin' and hollerin' the blues" in the Saturday evening session.

I find it decidedly weird that, to date, most pictures of blokes playing guitars have attracted in the region of 30 hits, but the view of our hotel over 100! What's that all about??
Title: Re: Euroweenie 2010

I would guess that the average viewer looks at a few pics of men playing guitars, but not all of them- so the hits against each picture are spread out.  But theres only one or two pics of the hotel- so every average viewer looks at those.

Well now, do I detect you have lost your loyalty for your current employer.. you are sure he's not a weenie and reading this  ::)

However, if you are that bored I could send you a cd with all the audio files on  :) Then you could sift your way through 'n' hours of assorted twanging, so just let me have your address.

Failing which and since at times I have no idea who is playing, I think will simply split them up into chronoillogical musical chunks and let those who performed name them.

All in favour???

Richard, I think you should do lots more work  >:D - you could e-mail mp3 tracks to their respective presumed auteurs, who could provide titles, personnel, instrumentation and matrix numbers... which you could then post for posterity.

Meanwhile, some Euroweenie goodness from and for Norfolk Slim... who may be able to provide more details.

Marvellous- thanks Mr Cat.  Particularly like Scratchy's monster 12 string and the banjo >:D

My one there is Jailhouse Blues by that well known bluesman "Trad."  My version is an evolution of Chris Smither's arrangement of Lightning Hopkins' arrangement.  Played about 30% too fast on hearing it back!

Finally, I have had some time to devote to getting the sound clips of the great event sorted. I should say don't expect a fully editied clip, 'cause they ain't other than removing the general noise from intros and outros it's as from the recorder. You may need to tweak the gain to get a bit more out them, a graphic equaliser would be ideal.

Then, having done that I thought how the hell am I going to offer them, since getting anything on my own site has become problematical. However, young Bluehome has ridden to the resue on his faithful triplate and kindly offered to post the clips on his site so they can be downloaded from there. Remember that some of this will be duplicated with the tracks that Marshcat has kindly posted as well  :)

Enjoy  :P

I finally found some time to post !
I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and looking forward to future events.
I got to play some great guitars and meet so many knowledgeable people it made me realise how much i have to learn.
Simon ? you have been far to generous to me .. but thanks anyway, I will return to complement and echo The Profs. statement that you improve year on year.
Johnm ? thanks for your comment on playing out, it was my first time, was going to say my last because I am no singer and the words just would not come out  ... I thoroughly enjoyed the playing though so I may give it another go soon.
Thanks to Richard and Phil for organising; the hotel was pretty good, food is not going to win any Michelin stars but was okay and the fact we had a dedicated room where we could leave the guitars was great.

Other Highlights :
Meeting everyone.
Some local ladies turning up during Bob?s performance (Can?t remember the song but it was about some women with mange) they left before the end of the song, you can?t write this stuff.
Sitting through yet another meal with Richard listening to his well observed anthropology
Thanks again all

If memory serves correct it first saw the light of day on a 1988 Document LP Delta Blues Vol.1  along with two other previously unissued TJs?causing apoplexy among the collector fraternity.

Later Edit: Silly me, all the details of the LP are given here http://www.wirz.de/music/johntfrm.htm More unissued Paramount tests than you could ever imagine on one compilation.
