http://gizmodo.com/5922410/this-is-the-oldest-vinyl-album-in-the-history-of-the-world Coincidentally, recent news about the earliest colour film footage has been making the rounds. Edwardian children beating a goldfish bowl with sunflowers etc...
oddenda
Why do those idiots keep referring to any old recording as "vinyl"? Or album???!!!
pbl I know someone who bought it when it came out. Nowhere near as good as his later stuff apparently.........
And, the production is very dated. Ax "After obtaining the sound profile hidden in the shadows of the print, he used software to recreate the actual sound."
Well...duh! Who here amongst us hasn't done the same? What? Okay. COOL! And just this morning I was carping about student athletes being treated like sun gods while the amazing kids at the science fair don't even get a mention on the back page. Thanks for the post. It makes perfect sense, but you have to have pretty high resolution photos of the original disks to work from, which leads me to wonder about the circumstances surrounding the photos. Perhaps it was part of the effort to explain the technology in printed / visual form at the early stages of development.
It looks like Patrick is at IU. Here are a couple of links: http://www.phonozoic.net/ http://newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/normal/22508.html http://www.indiana.edu/~medpres/ and the clip on Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/iuvas/review/43903528/412c873ff6 Even with the software, it's still a lot of work. As a "custodian of culture" with a tech bent, I can only express my admiration for his skills and efforts. Now I'm wondering if I should take a few Polaroids of my old 8-track tapes?? Just received an e-mail from D2D saying that Patrick Feaster's "Pictures of Sound" has been nominated for a Grammy. Here's a link:
http://www.dust-digital.com/feaster/ and one to the other thread: http://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=9718.msg82737#msg82737 It's pretty far down the Grammy list: "66. Best Historical Album." But since when is anything we discuss here high on any list other than our own? (--the only one that really counts, IMHO) Pages: [1] Go Up
