Chasey Collins Lyrics
« on: August 30, 2022, 06:19:24 PM »
Hi all,
Chasey Collins only had two titles released, I believe, under his own name, both dating from a session in Chicago on October 21, 1935, for which he was joined by Big Joe Williams on nine-string guitar in Spanish tuning and Dad Tracy on violin, with those two backing his vocal as Chasey played the washboard. The trio also recorded some Big Joe features, among them the spectacular "Wild Cow Blues". I sure wish this group had recorded more, because they really had an exciting sound, loose in the best possible way. And Big Joe's playing from this period was so rhythmically free and varied--I can't think of a player in the style with a more complex rhythmic vocabulary combined with the ability to execute his ideas. Here is "Walking Blues", and I'd very much appreciate help with any blank or otherwise questionable spots in the transcription.

INTRO SOLO

You can mistreat me here, but you can't when I go home
Lord, you can mistreat me here, but you, can't when I go home
I've got somebody there will make you leave me alone

Walk on, walk on, little girl, walk on
Walk on, walk on, little girl, walk on
Yeah, you gonna keep on walkin', 'til you lose your happy home

And you know you didn't love me, you fell down 'cross my bed, full of your moonshine whiskey, mama, talkin' all out your head
You know you didn't love me, fell down 'cross my bed
Full of your moonshine whiskey, mama, talkin' all out your head

Walk on, walk on, little girl, walk on
Walk on, walk on, little girl, walk on
Yeah, you gonna keep on a-walkin', 'til you lose your happy home

And I walked 'round to my window, and I peeped right through my blinds, I seen another darky tryin' to change my woman's mind
Sayin' I walked to my window, peeped right through the blinds
And I seed another darky, tryin' to change my woman's mind

SOLO

All best,
Johnm

Hi all,
Chasey Collins' other solo track, dating from the same session as "Walking Blues" and with the same personnel, is "Atlanta Town". I really like Chasey Collins' singing. He had an intense sound and sounds like he wasn't a kid. Here is "Atlanta Town", and once again, I'd really appreciate help with any places I've left blank or have transcribed incorrectly.

INTRO SOLO

When I find a town, that'll satisfy my mind
When I find a town, that will satisfy my mind
Then you know that's where I will be, for a great long time

When I get to Atlanta, walk on Decatur Street
When I get to Atlanta, walk on Decatur Street
I'm gonna shimmy-she-wobble, with every fair brown I meet

I've got a woman named Miss Hattie, she lives on Fourteenth Street
I've got a woman named Miss Hattie, she lives on Fourteenth Street
Oh, and the way that woman love me, I swear she can't be beat

I done spent all of my money, my bank account run low
I done spent all of my money, my bank account run low
My woman had the nerve to tell me, "Daddy, aren't you spendin' slow?"

And my mama's dead, and my daddy is in the mine
And my mama's dead, and my daddy is in the mine
And I'm a motherless child, and I just can't keep from cryin'

CODA

All best,
Johnm
