How to make MP3s of you playing

a2tom,
Hhhmmm yes, I do prefer seam driven things in general and if I want to go totally overboard I have here somewhere ancient but  amazing 15 inch per sec Ferrograph single track reel to reel  >:D

However, that aside I would appreciate some advice on a improving the microphone stakes - any ideas something 1/4" jack mono and not too too expensive.

Tom, sounds like you've got a nice little setup. You should be good to go once you sort out the software issue (which I have no advice on, since I'm on a Mac). Frankie had some suggestions and you can also go to zdnet.com in the downloads section, read the reviews and download something and try it out, both for mp3 conversion and audio editing software.

Like frankie, I record using a Sharp minidisc and a cheap stereo T mic. It's sufficiently unforgiving for me, giving me an excellent idea of how bad I sound. I can also record directly to the computer using a built-in mic. Sound is surprisingly passable for practice purposes.

Edited to add: There is an open source program called Audacity that one of the kids has just installed, which may be worth checking out, as I just noticed it's cross-platform. I haven't used it at all so have no opinions to offer. Apparently, according to the kid, early versions "sucked", but it is now "cool." I believe it does audio editing and audio conversions. Check here http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

a2tom,

I use a smilar setup to frankie (I know just enough to do what ?I need to get done) - A Sharp MD (was about $275) and Core binaural Mics (http://www.core-sound.com/mics.html) the low end ones, about $75. ?One mic for both guitar and voice - like in the old days. ;) ?Nice thing about MD recorders, they are portable and you can record anywhere, they double for recording at workshops - they have just come out with high capacity MD's that store 1 gb of data or 45 hours of recording on a single disk. ?

I also use Cool Edit to record from MD to computer and to convert and edit to MP3 - very handy. ?If you need some alternatives for MP3 conversion you might look at Winamp and several Output Plugins that convert to Mp3:

Slack, do these work with older models as well? I.e. is it just a disc with larger capacity or does the MD recorder have to be newer? And how much are they running? This would make life at Port Townsend so much simpler from a recording standpoint.

Mics aren't forgiving, are they? ?I knew I splurged on the mic I bought (I had some gift money itching in my bank account...), but comments make me realize just how far overboard I may have gone!? I am intrigued by the fact that folks are just grabbing guitar and voice with a single mic. ?Do you find it at all hard to get a good balance? ?How far away from the mic do you sit? ?

Portability - hadn't considered that one!? I just may be the guy dragging a suitcase around at Port Townsend next year with all his recording equipment (actually, it is designed to be portable, since it is powered by the USB, but you still need a laptop in tow).
