Memphis Minnie's Best Day in the Studio

I thought that perhaps some of you who do not subscribe to Living Blues magazine might enjoy reading my feature article from issue #262, "Memphis Minnie's Best Day in the Studio: The Story Behind 1941's 'Me and My Chauffer Blues'." At 3,000+ words, it's too long to post here, but you can view it for free (and listen to the embedded audio) via this link:

I am grateful to Jorma Kaukonen, Jim O’Neal, Del Rey, and Dick Spottswood for sharing their insights and research.

Yes, excellent article, exceptional writing on our favorite topic -- country blues.

I encourage everyone to especially linger on the long excerpt from a Langston Hughes Chicago Defender column describing a Memphis Minnie performance at a night club. It's toward the very end of the article. Wow. As Jas describes it -- evocative. Beautifully expressed images.

Agreed, Lindy. He knew how to write, that's for damn sure.
