Hi all,
Joe McCoy recorded "Look Who's Coming Down The Road" on September 5, 1935, in Chicago. The song was released as being performed by "Georgia Pine Boy". Joe accompanied himself out of A in standard tuning, using substantially the same Garfield Akers-ish accompaniment that he used to play "Something Gonna Happen To You", and he was joined by an unidentified fiddler. The song starts out as a cover of "Maggie Campbell Blues", but soon switches away from that, using several of the same verses as "Something Gonna Happen To You". Here is "Look Who's Coming Down The Road":
INTRO
Look over yonder, comin' down the road, walk like my baby, but she, walk too slow, cryin '
REFRAIN: Look over yonder, who comin' down the road
Lord, it walk like my baby, but she walk too slow
Now, cook my supper let me, go to bed, been drinkin' white lightnin' it's gone, through my head, cryin'
REFRAIN: Look over yonder, who comin' down the road
Lord, it walk like my baby, but she walk too slow
Well, they called the law and he brought his old, ball and chain, 'cusin' me of murder, I never harmed a man, cryin'
REFRAIN: Look over yonder, who comin' down the road
Lord, it walk like my baby, but she walk too slow (Spoken: Swing, it, boy!)
FIDDLE SOLO
Well, one of these old mornings I'm gon', jump and shout, bus roll up and my gal come, walkin' out, cryin'
REFRAIN: Look over yonder, who comin' down the road
Lord, it walk like my baby, but she walk too slow
I'm gon' ask you to give me a little somethin', I ain't, don't get mad, give me a little bit, baby, I ain't, never had, cryin'
REFRAIN: Look over yonder, who comin' down the road
Lord, it walk like my baby, but she walk too slow
Now, mammy she told me, my daddy sot down and he cried, "Some day, son, you got to lay down and die.", but I want you,
REFRAIN: Look over yonder, who comin' down the road
Lord, it walk like my baby, but she walk too slow
All best,
Johnm
