Title: Two Short Reviews
Post by: HardLuckChild on March 30, 2005, 07:45:41 PM
I probably should have separated each of these reviews into two different posts, but they are very short, so here goes:

I just purchased "Worried Blues Ain't Bad" by Johnny Shines. In addition to the usual inventive Shines songs and the ones that are Robert Johnson-ish, there are some re-creations of slavery-era field hollers. This really drives home the fact that Johnny Shines was a great musician, singer, AND blues historian. I'm surprised that the album only received three out of five stars on Allmusic.com. I'll be sure to check out Shines' live disc from Document Records. "Devil's Daughter" has some unique lyrics, and "Deep Freeze" sounds extremely Blind Lemon Jefferson-ish. Has anyone noticed this? Great album.

Reverend Gary Davis' "A Little More Faith" is another cd I picked up recently. When you guys said it's very hard to go wrong with a Davis disc, you were right. For me, the highlights on this cd are "I'll Be All Right Someday" and "There's A Table Sittin' In Heaven," but all the songs are excellent. The vocals and lyrics would be repetitive if they weren't so darned emotive and sincere. Apparently the only Davis disc that has negative reviews is a live one of his in which he only does five or six songs; the sound quality is supposed to be horrendous.
