Doug Quattlebaum Lyrics
« on: September 15, 2023, 11:44:40 AM »
Hi all,
Doug Quattlebaum was born in South Carolina but ended up, as an adult, in Philadelphia. He had one record on Prestige-Bluesville, "Mr. Softee's Blues", the cover of which showed him operating an ice cream truck, his job at the time. He had a later release on Testament, "If You've Ever Been Mistreated", which is where "Touch The Hem of His Garment" can be found. As far as I'm aware, he played everything in Vestapol tuning. He had a wonderful voice and sang with great joy and commitment. His singing here sure reminds me of Sam Cooke. Here is "Touch The Hem of His Garment":

INTRO

There was a woman, in the Bible days, she was sick for so very long
Then she heard that Jesus was passing by, and she joined the heavenly throng
And while she were pushing her way through, somebody said, "Woman, what are you trying to do?"
She said, "If I could just touch the hem of his garment, you know that I would be made whole right now." She stood there and cried,
"Oh Lord, and woh-oh-oh-oh, and woh-oh-oh, Lord.", She said,
"If I could just touch the hem of His garment, you know that I would be made whole right now."

And she spent her money, here and there, until she had no more, had no more to spare
Tell me the doctors, they did all they could, but all of their medicine, it did no good
And while Jesus was passing' through the street, He turned around and says, "Somebody, somebody touched me."
She said, "It was I who touched the hem of your garment, you know that I, I want to be made whole right now." She stood there crying,
Woh-oh, and woh-oh-oh-oh Lord, woh-oh, and woh-oh-oh, Lord.", she said,
"If I could just touch the hem of His garment, you know that I would be made whole right now."

All best,
John

Hi all,
Another Doug Quattlebaum performance from his "If You've Ever Been Mistreated" CD is "Hard Luck Blues" recently posted on the Weenie Campbell YouTube channel. "Hard Luck Blues" alternates between verses that open with a lyric break over the first four bars and verses with AAB phrasing. Here it is:

Well, the rocks is my pillow, the cold ground is my bed, the highway is my home, so I might as well be dead
I'm walkin' and walkin', it seems I have no place to go
Well, my mother dead and gone, and father drove me from his door

I've got one pair shoes, I don't even have the change of clothes
And I've got one pair shoes, I don't even have the change of clothes
And this road I've gotta travel, it's so muddy and cold

Well, I'm gonna get religion, learn how to pray, I need, that, that, Lord, that is the only way
I've traveled and traveled, it seem this road ain't got no end
And, you know, I ain't got nobody, in this mean old world to call my friend

I've got so much trouble, that sometime I could cry
I've got so much trouble, sometime I could cry
Well, I'm gonna find my mother grave, fall on her tombstone and die

CODA

All best,
Johnm
