Hi Rivers:

Here's part of what Tony posted to the PWBG:

"While many of the old-time musicians described in the 110 essays will
probably be familiar names to at least some listmembers- -though I hope I've
occasionally managed to say something fresh about them--there are also
stories that I believe are told here for the first time, e.g. about the
Golden Melody Boys, South Georgia Highballers, John D. Foster, Bernard
"Slim" Smith, Fleming & Townsend and others. The almost 200 illustrations
also include a substantial number of fresh or rarely seen images."

I don't know what the reasons were with respect to who he decided to include and who he decided to leave out. Obviously there are some major figures included, but as you point out, some of the big guns are not there. Perhaps the "Introduction" will provide more clarity about his selection process.

I agree. Both are well covered elsewhere. But so is Bob Wills, so I dunno what the criteria would be.

Reviving this oldie.

I've just started poking through Country Music Originals, and to address Rivers' question about why no Travis or Munroe, as he and Stuart suspected, a few big names are not included because they are covered in great detail by others, explains Russell in his introduction. He also notes this book is not comprehensive and reflects his personal preferences and interests.

That being said, it covers a lot of ground, so perhaps not comprehensive but an enormous and varied amount of information. The biographical essays are all short, running 1-3 pages on average, well-written and very informative. As something of a neophyte in the old-time country sphere, I can't say for certain how much will be new to more long-time fans, but I suspect a chunk will. The 200 photos and illustrations alone are reason enough to buy the book. Many I had not seen before and lots are reproduced at half to full page size. An index to musicians would have been nice, since there are many names buried within the main artist/group entries.

Highly recommended for those with an interest in the music. No regrets on this purchase.
