If you ever despair of playing and discussing music that you think no one cares about, take heart. In the big Southern Comfort Blues Tent at the New Orleans Jazz Fest today, the Carolina Chocolate Drops played a Rabbit Brown tune, a Blind Willie Johnson tune, and a Memphis Jug Band tune, and they had 2,000-plus people clapping and singing and jumping and shouting. The three members of the band traded off on guitar, banjo, fiddle, and jug. Wonderful performance!
Actually, there's plenty at Jazz Fest this weekend to make CB fanatics happy: John Hammond (in a quartet setting?), Snooks Eaglin, Keb Mo', and some PTCBW teaching alumni who are not pure CB: Henry Butler, Lil Buck Sinegal, Don Vappie, and Sunpie doing a Clifton Chenier tribute show. John Mooney did an interview/solo performance thing today that I couldn't get to 'cuz I was giving some time as a volunteer. He gigs regularly around New Orleans, and I can confirm that he still has a great blues voice, for both acoustic and electric blues.
But I'm not gloating. Trust me, I'm not.
