You see, she liked these young musicians, and in comes John Work and I - we were young to her. We were something sent down, and she didn't know which one to choose. Each of us knew we were not choosing her! We just wanted to talk, but she was interested in other things - Sterling Brown quoted in Ma Rainey and The Classic Blues Singers, Derrick Stewart-Baxter

This will be interesting to see what will be published:
the archival material will be featured in upcoming releases from Smithsonian Books and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. Thanks for the post. It looks like Mack's materials found a good home. It doesn't surprise me that John Troutman had a hand in it. Now the work begins. I think the work is been going on for a while. John Troutman must had have acces to the archive before it was donated but deliberately pushed the deadline so far ahead for "Biography of a Phantom". Maybe 'cause he knew it was coming to the Smithsonian before the end of the year. So now he has half a year to update the definitive manuscript. Or the book is already finished. It's all speculation I know. Troutman could even write book about unraveling "The Monster". Biography of a Phantom https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/718575/biography-of-a-phantom-by-robert-mack-mccormick-with-editors-preface-and-afterword-by-john-w-troutman/ A Robert Johnson Blues Odyssey is musicologist Mack McCormick’s all-consuming search, from the late 1960s until McCormick’s death in 2015, to uncover Johnson’s life story. The above line is exaggerated as McCormick in his later years lost interest on the subject but we'll see what will come out of Washington.... I've met and communicated with John. When time permits I'll send him an e-mail and ask about the Smithsonian's plans for Mack's materials.
