Set of strings for 12 string tuned down to B?
« on: September 15, 2010, 09:55:37 AM »
Does anyone know where I can order a set of 12 string with the following gauges:

course 1: .013/.013
course 2: .017/.017
course 3: .012/.026
course 4: .017/.038
course 5: .020/.048
course 6: .026/.066

I know Fraulini Guitars sells custom La Bella sets like these, but was wondering if there was a "standard" set out there.

Thanks!   :D

I know not where you are, but Malcom of Newtone strings will make up sets to order.
(That's enough of that. Ed)

I'm in the US, and I've dealt with Malcom at Newtone Strings to get their Aloha strings, which no one in the US seems to carry.  Inquiries were promptly answered, ordering was easy, and the strings came quickly.  Very nice strings, by the way.

Ordering from Newtone would be a custom set as well, not standard, and overseas prices. (Nothing against their strings which I know are highly regarded.) I guess they would use one of their phosphor bronze acoustic bass strings for the .066?

I notice Todd has taken down the string gauge reference section of the Fraulini website in which examples were given for Lead Belly, McTell, Barbecue Bob and standard Fraulini string setups. I wonder if we duplicated that information anywhere, otherwise it's lost!

Yeah, I don't know why Todd took down the string gauge information.  That was a great reference.  Maybe he'll put it back...

I'm in New Jersey, USA.   :D

I've made do with a set of these in a pinch, although you do have to get an additional .026 if you don't want an octave on the third course:

D'Angelico 12-string set - medium

They're pretty close to the fraulini set, except for the low bass string - you'll have to decide if that'll work for you and your right hand.  It can get a little floppy, depending on how low you tune it.

I'm getting away with a J.Pearse 12-string set, 13-58 I think which I thought I'd try as a back up to La Bellas. Ok to B and just useable at A although Frankie is right about the bass being a bit loose.

Those sound like good backups to the LaBella set.  My first choice is the LaBella set from Todd, but its a good idea to be able to get a backup set in an "emergency".

Thanks again everyone.

Not too far from your gauges, there's also the GHS Leo Kottke :
013 013
017 017
030w 013
040w 017
048w 028w
056w 036w
See : http://elderly.com/accessories/items/GLK12.htm
I use them tuned down to C#
