spirituals/sermons/stomping and clapping
« on: October 01, 2008, 08:16:17 AM »
hey folks,
i just received my copy of arhoolie records "country negro jam session"(Arhoolie cd 372,great album by the way).
now on this i've heard just a couple of people singing a spiritual called i've got religion, just accompanying themselves with stomping and clapping. now, this really hit me deep. i've heard stuff like this before but only in tv documentaries and would never have thought that this stuff ever was recorded and made available.now i'm searching for more spiritual recordings in that way, shouting-clapping-stomping-ranting, also in the same way like you hear on the recordings of a w nix(unfortunately i can#t get hold of a w nix recordings from this country), so humbly i turn to the weenie campbell community, asking for some recommendations in that style.can you help me out?really appreciate it.

Hi Flakey,

You'll need "Goodbye Babylon" for sure.... worth every penny.

Flakey,

I can't think of entire collections of recordings that closely resemble that track on the Jam Session CD. Some will be mixed in with other styles. Depending on what you're looking for, you might consider Spreading the Word - JSP Records http://www.amazon.de/Spreading-Word-Various/dp/B0002TX8TO/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1222965353&sr=8-5. I really enjoy this set. It has some preaching tracks (usually launching into singing at some point) but the music generally has instrumental accompaniment.

Some of the stuff from Spreading the Word is available on Document's Storefront & Streetcorner Gospel 1927 - 1929 http://document-records.com/fulldetails.asp?ProdID=DOCD-5054. That focuses on Washington Phillips but also has the splendid Luther Magby and the transcendent A.C. and Blind Mamie Forehand (found elsewhere on one of the JSP guitar evangelist sets). And some of the Spreading the Word stuff is on the Memphis Sanctified Jug Bands set from Document (http://document-records.com/fulldetails.asp?ProdID=DOCD-5300).

You may want to check out this one on Arhoolie:

Angola Prison Spirituals http://www.arhoolie.com/titles/9036.shtml

And Document has the A.W. Nix material (you can't get Documents?). Along with many other preachers. I haven't heard most of these but notice these examples on the website:
Preachers & Congregations Vol 7 1925 - 1928 http://document-records.com/fulldetails.asp?ProdID=DOCD-5567
Black Religious Music 1930 - 1956 http://document-records.com/fulldetails.asp?ProdID=DOCD-5639 currently on sale for ?2.99.

Do searches by Artist on Document's site for Rev. and Elder and you'll find a bunch.

I suspect one of the best places to look for unaccompanied spirituals and gospel material would be in some of the Lomax recordings, of which I know only very little. There is some really good material like this from a congregation led by the Rev. C.H. Savage on the Mississippi: Saints and Sinners disc in the Alan Lomax Deep River of Song series. About 8 tracks or so. Perhaps Peter Lowry will chime in with some other recommendations from that series.
