John Miller Guitar Workshop in Edinburgh, Sunday, June 29, 2014
« on: February 08, 2014, 04:12:59 PM »
Hi all,
I'm very excited to be visiting Scotland for the first time at the end of June, and am looking forward to doing a guitar workshop in Edinburgh.  Here are the particulars:

Country Blues Guitar Workshop in Edinburgh, Sunday, June 29:
EAEGBE and DGDGBE Tunings:  Learning How to Get Around In Them and How Different Musicians Played in Them.
In this four-hour workshop, we will examine these two tunings, which were used for some of the most interesting, varied and subtle Country Blues guitar-playing.  Starting with the mysterious EAEGBE tuning, we?ll examine how chords are formed in it, what special advantages it offers those who use it, and how it was used for different sounds by Clifford Gibson, Furry Lewis and Ed Bell.  In the second half of the workshop, we?ll look at DGDGBE tuning in the same sort of way, and see how it was used by Lonnie Johnson, Bo Carter and Lil? Son Jackson to get altogether different sounds.
There will be an hour-long meal break in the middle of the workshop.  Participants should be comfortable finger-picking Country Blues guitar with an alternating bass.  TAB will be provided for the songs we cover, at the end of the presentation, for those who want it.  To sign up for the workshop, go to:  www.johnmillerguitar.com , in the ?Teaching? section, where location and cost of the workshop and how to enroll are described.

I hope some of you can make it, especially since I won't be able to teach at Northampton this summer.  Let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks for your time and a special thanks to Professor Scratchy for setting up the workshop.
All best,
Johnm

Hi Old Man Ned,
Thanks very much for signing up for the Workshop!  It should be a lot of fun, as we'll be focusing on some terrific songs and players.  I think the EAEGBE tuning is a special eye-opener if you've never played it in before.  I'm looking forward to it.
All best,
Johnm

I wish that we could stop off in Calgary on the way back, Alex, but our travel is already booked straight through to Seattle.  Maybe I'll do a class on the EAEGBE tuning at Port Townsend.
All best,
Johnm

Hi Dom,
Where in Europe are you located, just out of curiosity?  Most of Europe I've never been in, unfortunately.  I've been to Denmark, Finland and Italy.
All best,
Johnm

Thanks for that information, Mark.  I would love to come to France some time and Paris in particular.  I hope that that works out in the future.

That's great that you can make it, Colm, thanks for signing up!  I'll see you then.  It should be fun because we're really going to be working on some cool music.

Hi there !

I would like to be on this workshop too.
I'm in Edinburgh (and I am Prof Scratchy's duo bandmate).
Mind you, I've played with the Prof Scratchyness for about 16yrs now and have hardly learnt anything from him - which surely must be a crime ? !! (And a heck of a wasted opportunity !). So, who knows how much i will actually learn and retain !!! ???

Am I best to borrow one of Prof Scratchy's parlour guitars, or would one of my Nationals be OK ?
Oh, wait a minute, my Gibson L50 archtop would be OK - as it's not too loud - but possibly too quiet.

If there are still places, I'll go book & pay for my place now.

Hi snakehips,
Yes, there's room for sure.  The archtop Gibson sounds like a good bet.  16 years playing with Prof. Scratchy--that's pretty cool!  My thought is to start out each half of the workshop just getting acquainted with the tuning we'll be working on, see how it lays out and what it makes possible and then go from there into specific tunes that different players used these tunings for.  I encourage folks to bring a portable recording device, since that really helps to re-construct what we go over later on after you get back home.  I look forward to meeting you there.
All best,
Johnm
