He stayed with the other colored fellows and they worked on the railroad there; he'd just sing and play to entertain the men in the work camp. I think that right about there I started on the guitar - Hobart Smith recalls Lemon in Virginia, c. WWI, from Blacks, Whites and Blues by Tony Russell

Re-listening, and hearing that the word in question is pronounced with an opening "kw" consonant sound, as opposed to being pronounced the same as "curl", I agree that it should be transcribed as "quirl" and will make that change.

Glad you made that change. I was about to post a Johnny Temple song (there are others on weeniepedia with the "coil" line) when you accepted "quirl".
