Mose Andrews-"Ten Pound Hammer" and "Young Heifer Blues"
« on: June 28, 2015, 04:26:15 PM »
Hi all,
I know nothing about Mose Andrews in the biographical sense, but he has two cuts included on the JSP set, "When The Levee Breaks-Mississippi Blues".  His song, "Ten Pound Hammer" is played out of dropped-D tuning and is in the "Big Road Blues/Stop and Listen" family.  Here it is:

INTRO

I've got a ten-pound hammer and I just dropped in your town, don't you hear me talkin', pretty mama?
Got a ten-pound hammer, just dropped in your town
I got weight behind it, for to drive the old hammer on down

I got a ten-pound hammer, and I got weight to drive it down, don't you hear me talkin', pretty mama?
Got a ten-pound hammer, I got weight to drive it down
I drive for the women from town to town

Take me through the alley, pretty mama, don't go too far around, don't you hear me talkin', pretty mama?
Take me through the alley, don't go too far around
Just hurry down, so we can drive 'em on down

I've got a ten-pound hammer and the womens love to hear it sound, don't you hear me talkin', pretty mama?
Got a ten-pound hammer, the womens love to hear it sound
They says, "Come on, Moses, go and drive it on down."

I've got a ten-pound hammer, and I got weight to drive it down, don't you hear me talkin', pretty mama?
I've got a ten-pound hammer, got weight to drive it down
When I drive for the women, they carries on like a clown

All best,
Johnm

Hi all,
The other cut by Mose Andrews included on the JSP set, "When the Levee Breaks-Mississippi Blues" is "Young Heifer Blues", which turns out to be a cover of Big Bill Broonzy's "Bull Cow Blues".  Like "Bull Cow Blues", "Young Heifer Blues" is played out of G position in standard tuning.  Here is Mose Andrews' performance:

INTRO

If you got a young heifer, you better feed her good at home
If you got a young heifer, you better feed her good at home
If you don't, some bull will 'tole her 'way from home

My heifer in a stall, I feed her three time a day
My heifer in stall, I feed her three time a day
I believe to my soul, some bull is going my way

If you got a young heifer, you better keep her to your command
If you got a young heifer, you better keep her to your command
If you don't, some bull'll make her understand

I swear before God, You oughta be 'shamed of yourself
I swear before God, You oughta be 'shamed of yourself
Goin' 'round here swearin', you got a-hold of her by yourself

My heifer young, she won't let her milk come down
My heifer young, she won't let her milk come down
If she bag her leg, she will overflow the town

All best,
Johnm
