what sad news about louisiana red. thanks goodness i got to see him play live a few years and got to meet him after the show, a true gentleman of the blues he really will be missed.

His first visit to Britain was in May 1978 and on Saturday 6th I spent the afternoon and early evening with Red at promoter John Stedman's north London home. Somewhere I have two C90 cassettes of him talking and playing. Twenty years later I eventually put them to good use when asked to write the Louisiana Red issue of the fortnightly part-work, The Blues Collection.

I met Red in Port Townsend when he was teaching and performing several years ago. He came by the night he arrived and was hanging out at one of the houses. He sure seemed like a genuinely nice man, bursting with enthusiasm for music still, after so many years playing it. I even got to pick a little with him. If I recall correctly, he had trouble sleeping, so he was kind of always on. If I'd had an early life like Red's I would probably have trouble sleeping too.

Red borrowed my Dobro Model 30 for a workshop at a festival (Colne?) afterwards the person who'd brokered the deal said I was lucky to get it back in one piece.
