Wu Man at Symphony Space/Thalia

The Pipa is a Chinese Lute like instrument and WuMan who is a Wooman is the preeminent player of it. She has truly mind blowing chops and I urge anyone in the New york area to catch her performance tomorrow night at 7:30 95th & Broadway. Its no exaggeration to say that watching her shred on the pipa is equivalent to seeing Blind Blake, Lonnie Johnson, Willie Walker and Gary Davis with a little Jimi Hendrix thrown in. Amazing.

Thanks for the post, Mr. O. The Wiki entry for the pipa is actually quite good, if anyone wants to delve further into its history:

It goes without saying that Wu Man is masterful.

Thanks M. O'Muck, that was great. Interesting to hear her confirm anecdotally what I had noticed, which is many pipa players today tend to be female. Whereas many players of the banjo-like sanxian tend to be male, in my very limited exploration.
