Tary Owens' Catfish & Spindletop labels
« on: March 03, 2008, 03:07:28 AM »
In 1987 Tary Owens founded Catfish Records to release his 1965 Grey Ghost recordings and other 'field recordings'. Later on he introduced Spindletop Records to get new recordings out on the market (his last recordings were issued on the Dutch Black Magic label).
Very few infos about those early albums on the internet, always a reason for me to build a discography (of course with them gaps to be filled  ;)

William A Owens during one of his many "song collecting expeditions" was introduced to Grey Ghost in July 1940 playing at a Navasaota roller skating rink. There's an entire chapter devoted to Grey Ghost in Owens's third volume of autobiography "Tell Me A Story, Sing Me A Song; A Texas Chronical" (Texas UP 1983). Anyone know if Tary is related to William?

This is a trio recording of Mance playing electric guitar live 1965 recorded by Tary Owens
(because of a unissued recording appr. 1 minute of music and only for research available)
Goin' Down Slow mp3

Listen also to this instrumental and if you know the title of this song, please come forward.
Mance Instumental title ? mp3

Also included is the demo cd artwork only with titles for Stefan, look at his excellent Tary Owens and "Catfish"  and Mance Lipscomb discography:
