Female guitarist playing "What a friend we have in Jesus"?
« on: March 02, 2007, 08:34:54 AM »
Guys,
I think it was on WC that I heard a solo acoustic guitar version of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." It's a rolicking version and at the end a woman says "what a friend we have in Jesus." So.. Anybody know which recording it is?

I was inspired to make a ukulele version of that recording and I want to hear it again to see how close I was to that version.
Thanks!
Alan

Could it have been Algia Mae Hinton? Go here and you can request it on the Juke:

Hi all,
Libba Cotten also recorded "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" on her first Folkways album, in a medley with "Sweet Bye And Bye".
All best,

Yeah, that was certainly the Algia Mae Hinton version of the song, as she would often repeat the song title at the tune's conclusion. This was on her first CD release titled Honey Babe;Blues, Folk Tunes and Gospel From North Carolina and is a differnt release than the one on Cello/Music Maker. It was recorded in Port Townsend, WA and released in 1996. I have a few copies of this now rare release and could provide you with one if you want it.
