Title: Info about Teddy Williams?
Post by: JohnLeePimp on July 04, 2011, 01:47:14 PM
I have the following information:

His photo from the Mitchell collection:
(https://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F3.bp.blogspot.com%2F-SVcmaHwEkyM%2FTdSJolyT6XI%2FAAAAAAAABWY%2FswXEFR7D40o%2Fs1600%2Fcover.jpg&hash=fe9da1b94bf187ba725dc1d0f5d94378c3345063)

The track list:

01. Shaggy Hound
02. The Swing Blues
03. Catfish Blues No. 1
04. Down Home Blues
05. Going Away Blues
06. Catfish Blues No. 2
07. Black Mattie
08. Hard Time Blues
09. Sun Don't Shine
10. You See Me Laughing

But apparently he also recorded numbers by Son House and Skip James... where might I be able to find these other recordings?

I'm speaking from memory, but I believe "Black Mattie" and "Hard Time Blues" are the songs you're referring to. They're on the collection you have pictured.

Yeah, Hard Time Blues is a version of Hard Time Killin' Floor, though has more in common with the sound of Do Boy Diamond, IMO. And Black Mattie has a verse from My Black Mama and follows the melody somewhat, as does Going Away Blues. Williams uses some familiar Mississippi lyrics and I wonder whether some of them were just floating and that the songs were just songs some people learned through them being passed along, rather than specifically covering Son House or Skip James. Williams also did a version of Shaggy Hound Blues, which was done by Shirley Griffith, but as was discussed around here recently, may possibly have roots in the repertoire of Ishmon Bracey. And he does Catfish, which is more of a cover.
