Title: Song Specific Invention or Common Parlance?
Post by: Mr.OMuck on March 30, 2008, 08:43:22 PM
I'm guessing this topic has been covered before but just in case it hasn't....Was a term like "Stomp Down Rider" something that anyone aside from Blind Willie McTell ever used to describe someone? Were guys walkin' around Atlanta sayin' "Yeah, She's a Stomp Down Rider!? Or is this a song specific appellation?
How about "Easy Rider"? Was anyone actually saying "I'm goin' over to my easy rider's house tonight?"
Or "Doney" or any of the other dozens of alternate names, mostly for women?

Well I just asked my biscuit roller and she doesn't know either. I've never even thought about what 'stomp down rider' actually meant so I look forward to somebody telling me.

Wonder if Easy Riders wore Easy Walkers?

A "stomp down rider" has some interesting connotations but I can't think of any that would be physically possible  ;)

When my rider got home this evening I took her by my side.  I said "Baby, what does 'stomp down' mean?".  She said, "Never you mind you don't want to know, 'cause I'm a mean mistreater and your mojo might not work on my stingaree no more!"

Common parlance apparently at least to some folks in the South:

"Q: Were you more interested in the lyrics or type of dance step that the people could do to your music?

A: Well it depended on what type of dance they had. You see ever since I started travelling cities, I found out things are different in the cities than it is in the country. In the country they had these old stomp down dances, you understand. Played on sets. They used to have fiddle players."

This form an interview with the Reverend posted on Stephan Grossman's GuitarVideos website under Interviews Reverend Gary Davis.
