There was a time when music knew its place. No longer. Possibly this is not music's fault. It may be that music fell in with a bad crowd and lost its sense of common decency - Fran Lebowitz, "The Sound of Music: Enough Already"

Bad Boy by Hensley & Taylor
« on: October 03, 2017, 09:48:25 AM »
Well, it's not country blues, but...it's country.  I'm trying to figure out the words to Hensley & Taylor's "Bad Boy".  There is just something about it that I find very charming.  Maybe it's that they don't sound like they were actually very bad boys. Or it could be the quirky timing. Any help appreciated!  Here's the Youtube link:
Here's what I've got:
Bad Boy ? Henlsey & Taylor
I have roamed  for years and years all around this town
Roamin round this bad bad farm Made a bad boy out of me
I have caused a lot of weeping since I went away
I?m going back to Mama just listen what I say

I?ve been a bad boy, in my past boy
But I?m gonna be a good boy now
I?ve had the best time, In the whole world
But it turned out to be a big mistake   somehow
I?m just a ?in the mess hall
They tried to make a man out of me
I?ve made up my mind if you ???
I?m going back and mend a lot of broken hearts
I?ve been a bad boy, in my past boys
But I?m gonna be a good boy now

Hi Suzy,
I'll give it a shot.  Is that Larry Hensley on the mandolin?  I like everything I've ever heard by him.

I have roamed for years and years, all around these towns
Roamin' 'round with a bad, bad form made a bad boy out of me
I have caused a lot of worries (pronounced wearies) since I went away
I'm going back tomorrow, just listen while I say

I've been a bad boy, in my path, boy
But I'm gonna be a good boy now
I've had the fast girls, in the whole world
But they turned out to be a big mistake, somehow,
I've got the best Ma, and the best Pa
They tried to make a man out of me
I've made up my mind, if this train ever stops
I'm going back and mend a lot of broken hearts
I've been a fast boy, in my past, boy
But I'm gonna be a good boy now

All best,
Johnm

Oh, interesting!  Yes, I'm pretty sure it is Larry Hensley on mandolin. I also emailed Meredith Axelrod and she sent me the following, slightly different, words:
Bad Boy ? Henlsey & Taylor

I have roamed  for years and years all around this town

Roamin round with a bad bad boy Made a bad boy out of me

I have caused a lot of worries since I went away

I?m going back tomorrow; just listen what I say

I?ve been a bad boy, in my past boy

But I?m gonna be a good boy now

I?ve had the best gal, In the whole world

But it turned out to be a big mistake   somehow

I?ve had the best pa, and the best ma

They tried to make a man out of me

I?ve made up my mind if this train ever starts (he sings stops the first time but I'm not sure about the second time, and starts does rhyme with hearts)

I?m going back and mend a lot of broken hearts

I?ve been a bad boy, in my past, boy,

But I?m gonna be a good boy now

In Country Music Records: A Discography, 1921-1942,  Tony Russell and Bob Pinson have "Bad Boy" as being by Taylor and Walker:

Hensley, Taylor and Walker are listed on the "B" side, "It's Hard To Make Gertie."

Hi Suzy,
I re-listened to the track, and in the places where Meredith and I differed on the lyrics I'm pretty sure the lead singer and the tenor sang different things.  I realized that I was hearing the tenor more, and transcribed what he sang, and in those same places, Meredith transcribed what the lead singer sang.  It seems like the lead singer's lyrics make more sense in terms of telling the story.
All best,
Johnm

John, your last sentence made me smile in spite of grieving for Lucas.  And made me think of that line from "It Is So Good" (or one of that family):  It don't make you think you ain't got good sense.  Thank you for all you do on this site (and elsewhere)
