I posted this vid on Weenie years ago, I think under the circumstances it's worth re-posting, it really shows Phil's brilliance as a musician.

Performance Corner / Zoom Classes: Fingerstyle Blues in DGDGBE Tuning
« Last post by Johnm on Yesterday at 06:07:51 AM »
Hi all,

Fingerstyle Blues in DGDGBE Tuning

The next in this series of Zoom classes on open/alternate tunings used in Country Blues will be held this coming Saturday, May 18, at 10:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time, and will focus on DGDGBE tuning. We’ll open the class by getting oriented to where the blues scale sits in it and examine different options for playing the I, IV and V7 chords. Then we’ll see how the primary practitioners in the tuning, Lonnie Johnson, Bo Carter and Lil’ Son Jackson approached the tuning and how they achieved their very different sounds in it. We’ll then look at other possibilities the tuning makes available that are yet to be utilized and conclude with a question-and-answer period.

The class will be recorded and sent to all participants so you’ll be able to review the lesson content. Persons interested in the class who are unable to attend the day it is offered may still purchase it and receive the film of the class, which is sent to all purchasers immediately following the presentation. Cost of the class is $40.00. To sign up, make a payment to my account at paypal.com as per the instructions at https://johnmillerguitar.com/teaching.html . Once I’ve been notified that payment has been made, I’ll send you an invitation. I hope to see you there!

All best,
Johnm

Several good ways to honor him, one is to play a song that you associate with him (and John Cephas), another is to read "Sweet Bitter Blues," by Phil W and Frank Matheis. It's essentially an "as told to" book, with Phil talking about his life, travels, music, and the Washington D.C. blues community that nurtured him. Long-time Port Townsend workshop participants will appreciate reading about many of the instructors we met over the years.

A kind and generous man. Wish I had taken up the harmonica so I could have spent more PT time with him.

As Martha wrote in her announcement, "It is not lost on us that his impacts extend far and wide, we are very fortunate for that. So in his memory, love on each other, play music and share good food, laughter and folklore. That's what he would want."

After entering hospice on Monday, Phil Wiggins departed us Tuesday morning after a long battle with cancer.  Wednesday was his 70th birthday.

Phil was about as kind and gentle a person as you could hope to meet.  His playing combined teamwork with a virtuosity all his own.  Many of us here knew him, learned from him and jammed with him.  Some of us enjoyed his salmon - and his famous all-day, Midnight Special barbecue!  All of us bathe in the light of his goodness, generosity and grace.

Judy has been keeping us up-to-date on Phil's GoFundMe page, where Martha posted today's notice:

https://www.gofundme.com/f/team-love-for-phil-wiggins

As well, the NEA has published their obituary:  https://www.arts.gov/news/press-releases/2024/national-endowment-arts-statement-death-national-heritage-fellow-phil-wiggins

I'm going to miss Phil greatly, even though I knew him only through camp.  And that was a good place to know him.

Milkcow's Calf Blues (DAL.403-3)

Robert Johnson – Guitar, Vocals

Dallas, Texas
June 20, 1937

Spanish Tuning

INTRO

Tell me, milk cow, what on earth is wrong with you?
Hee hee eee, milk cow, what on earth is wrong with you?
Now, you have a little new calf, hoo hoo, and your milk is turnin' blue

Now, your calf is hungry, I believe he needs a suck
Now, your calf is hungry, hoo hoo, I believe he needs a suck
But your milk is turnin' blue, hoo hoo, I believe he's outta luck

Now, I feel like milkin' and my, cow won't come, I feel like churnin' it and my, milk won't turn, I'm cryin'
Please, please, don't do me wrong
If you see my milk cow, baby, now-how, please, drive her home

My milk cow been ramblin', hoo hoo, for miles around
My milk cow been ramblin', hoo hoo, for miles around
Well, now, she can suck on some other man's bull cow, hoo hoo, in this strange man town

For U. S. residents who are interested, more of the CDs have sold, but there are still some terrific ones left, among them:
   * Buddy Moss, Vol. 2 on Document, which has all of his amazing 1934 solo sessions.
   * Booker White on Document, which includes his earliest recordings and the fantastic sessions he did for Lester Melrose.
   * Gene Campbell, Ed Bell, Clifford Gibson on Document
   * The 2 Memphis Willie B. albums on Prestige
   * The 2-disc set of Son House on Arcola, post-rediscovery at the top of his game
   * Great JSP sets
Check out the updated list to see all of what's still available.
All best,
Johnm

Hey Lindy, thanks for posting that link.  Although I drive a more modern vehicle now, I still have my 2000 Tacoma with that plate on it.  I did get a chuckle out of this line: "Approximately 20 blues fans from as far away as Austin, Dallas, and Houston attended."  Wortham is about an hour south of Dallas, which is spitting distance in Texas.  I'm guessing a few of those 20 also bought the plate. ;)
