I'm beginning to notice some improvement - Cellist Pablo Casals, when asked why, at the age of 93, he is still devoting 3 hrs a day for practicing

From Minstrels To Mojo 1893-1946
« on: January 06, 2006, 04:08:14 AM »
Hi folks,

Browsing through Amazon I chanced upon a 9 CD set called American Pop: An Audio History - From Minstrels to Mojo: On Record 1893-1946. Do any Weenie's have this collection? If so, are the tracks transfered from the original 78's? How good is the re-mastering? I have the vast majority of these tracks and would only consider American Pop if the sound was something special.

I can't speak for the CD set but in 1997 Cadence Jazz Books published a very useful and knowledgeable 280 page book entitled American Pop, From Minstrel to Mojo: On Record 1893-1956. It was written by Allen Lowe who had patently done his "homework". Could the CD set be some kind of (belated?) companion? I can't spot any reference to it in the book.

The CD set issued in 2000, and was apparently another labor of love by Mr. Lowe. You can listen to selected sounds bytes and read some reviews here:

It appears that this compilation is out of print but can be had "used'. I wish I had a copy - having not seen this one before. Thanks for the heads-up.
Cheers,

American Pop can be ordered from the Music & Arts website, although it looks like the website hasn't been updated for a while, with From Minstrels To Mojo listed as a new release. Try e-mailing them to check on availability.
