A phrase that should live in infamy appears all too often in the Gennett ledgers: "Rejected - too much backwoods" - Richard Nevins, entry on the Shepherd Brothers in R. Crumb's Heroes of Blues, Jazz and Country

Performance Corner / Zoom Classes: Fingerstyle Blues Guitar in Open/Alternate Tunings
« Last post by Johnm on April 03, 2024, 09:33:45 AM »
Hi all,
I just wanted to add that the series of Zoom classes on open/alternate tunings that I'm starting this Saturday with a class on Spanish tuning will not be heavily theory-driven. We'll back into the theory via the sound and the chord shapes.
All best,
Johnm

Shirley Griffith is a musician I need to explore. His name gets brought up here quite a bit, but I've haven't listened to many of his recordings. Mance is one of my favorites. I've wondered what he would have sounded like had he recorded earlier.

Guys like Frank Stokes & Tommy Johnson (and I'm sure many others) were just a handful of years away from making it to the modern recording era of 1960.
Cheers!

Sounds good to me, Ken.

Edited to add: even a instrumental by Hacksaw Harney, very cool.

Good job on all of that thumb work in the picking hand, Carl. You're right--that's challenging!
all best,
Johnm
