I've been sick with the flu, then I had pneumonia on both sides... that was two weeks before Christmas, but now, all the blues I've been playin', think I'll give y'all a couple of church numbers. I ain't never through with the blues yet, but you know, I gotta get well first before I play too many blues. Church songs now, cause, you know, I might die... - Furry Lewis, 1969, from Fourth & Beale, Lucky Seven CD9202
Though I know we have a reference to the Mississippi John Hurt Museum somewhere, I don't recall whether the page of lyrics transcriptions hosted there has been mentioned. I came across it last night, so here it is:
Mississippi John Hurt had a near-perfect style of playing and singing. Like Lead Belly, Blind Willie McTell, Henry Thomas, and a few others, he not only performed blues music, but songs that came from a generation or two before blues music. That's one of the reasons his music is transporting. He also has this soothing effect on listeners, regardless of whether or not they're into blues. When I listen to Hurt, everything seems alright with the world.
A few weeks ago I gathered all of my research on Mississippi John Hurt -- including materials from interviews with Stefan Grossman and Rory Block, who both knew him -- and wrote an article for my Archive. If you're interested, here's a link: http://jasobrecht.com/mississippi-john-hurt-life-music/
