Title: Pink Anderson Lyrics
Post by: junko on August 07, 2004, 08:38:20 PM
I've been working on Travelin' Man -- great tune.  Pink tunes down a whole step and uses the progression as written above.  Here is what I got for the lyrics:

https://youtu.be/sBxUXNsI17w

Travelin’ Man

I just want to tell you bout a man name Coon
His home was in Tennessee
He made his living stealing chickens
And everything that he could see
That popeyed man he run so fast
His feet couldn’t stay in the road
When a freight train pass
No matter how fast he’d always get on board

He was a travelin’ man
Certain was a travelin’ man
He was the travelin’est man
Was ever in the land
He travel, and known for miles around
He didn’t get caught, didn’t give up
Til the police shot him down

Well the police hide in an automobile
On purpose to chase old coon
He running from 6 o’clock in the morning til 7 in the afternoon
That popeyed man he run so fast til fire came from his heel
He burn up the cotton and he scorched the corn
He cut a road through the farmer’s field

He said I’m a travelin’ man
Certain was a travelin’ man
travelin’est man
Was ever in the land
He travel, and known for miles around
But he didn’t get caught, didn’t give up
Til the police shot him down

Well the police shot him with a rifle
And the bullet went through his head
All the people they came from miles around
To see the man was dead
They telegrammed down south to his mother
She’s all carried away in tears
She walked up an opened up the coffin lid
And that fool had disappeared

He said I’m a travelin’ man
Certain was a travelin’ man
travelin’est man
Was ever in the land
He travel, and known for miles around
But he didn’t get caught, didn’t give up
Til the police shot him down

This man was on the Titanic ship
And it was sinking down
Sitting out on a towel
With his head hung down
When this boy jumped overboard
Everybody said he was a fool
And about three minutes after that
He was shooting dice over in Liverpool

He said I’m a travelin’ man
Certain was a travelin’ man
travelin’est man
What ever in the land
He travel, boys he was known for miles around
He didn’t get caught, didn’t give up
Til the police shot him down

This boy he went to the spring one day
To get a pail of water
The distance the rascal had to go
Was about 2 miles and a quarter
He got there got his water
And when he started back
He stumbled and fell down
But he went to the house and got him another bucket
Caught the water ‘fore it hit the ground

Now you know he was a travelin’ man
That certain was a travelin’ man, talk about it
travelin’est man
Was ever in the land
You know he travel, boys he was known for miles around
He didn’t get caught, didn’t give up
Til the police shot him down

Hello!

I'm looking for Pink Anderson lyrics; no one found on the net!
Every search brings to a short biography/discography or, more often, to about a thousand of Pink Floyd (the rock band) sites.
Please, could you help me?

Many thanks!

Hi Marco - There's not a lot out there. You might be better off searching on song titles or lyric fragments, since some of the material Pink did was common songster stock. You might also want to look at Paul Oliver's book Songsters and Saints, which covers a lot of the ground to be found in Pink's songster-style repertoire. Not much in the way of specific Pink transcriptions there, but many related songs that would give you an excellent head start. Plus it's an essential book IMO, one of Oliver's best. :) Or begin transcribing some of the lyrics you're interested in getting and post them here for people to help you out.

I'd go along with UB re. S&S plus, from memory, Bruce Bastin in his book Red River Blues devotes most of a chapter entitled "Up On The Road" to Pink Anderson. No time to check it out but maybe someone else has.

Gonna Tip Out Tonight

I says go on girl
don't sing them blues to me
Because I'm sweet
as any man can be
She even told me
to my face
That any old rounder
sure can take my place
Said I'm getting tired
of your lowdown ways
I'm going back
to my babe today
So come on girl
honey you can't bluff
I'm going to tip out tonight
and I'm going to strut my stuff

Hi Marco,
As I read your most recent post I realized I have transcribed all the lyrics to "Tip Out Tonight", including the verse and segue and also give the chord progression over on the Main Forum in a thread called "Rag Blues And Circle of Fifths".  The post can be found on page 2 of the thread, which is currently on the first page of the Forum at the bottom.

Hi all,
Pink Anderson recorded an epic version of "The Wreck Of The Old 97" for Samuel Charters in Spartanburg, South Carolina on August 14, 1961.  The version can be found on "The Blues of Pink Anderson--Ballad and Folksinger, Vol. 3" on Prestige Bluesville, OBCCD-577-2.  It is recently enough since Fantasy, who put out the CD version of this recording, went under, that there are probably still some copies of the CD in stores.  If you find it, nab it--it's a great CD.

Pink played this out of D in standard tuning, and did it from beginning to end (four minutes and thirty-eight seconds!) without taking a single solo or interrupting the narrative flow in any way.  That's a lot of words to remember without coming up for air!  Most versions I have heard of this song have fewer than half as many verses as Pink sang.  I have been meaning to transcribe this one for a while.  I think my favorite aspect of it is the way Pink keeps singing about "Steve"; it's like he's talking about his next-door neighbor.  I hope you all get a chance to hear this one.

https://youtu.be/bIokmSx0iIQ

On the 29th day of one November morning
When the cloud was hangin' low
97 pulled out from Washington city
Like an arrow shot from the bow

97 was the fastest mail train
   The South had ever seen
And it run from New York by the way of Washington
Through Atlanta down in New Orlean (sic)

I was standing on the mount one cold and frosty morning
   Watching the smoke from below
That were comin' from the funnel of that black and dusty engine
Way down up on that Southern road

It was 97, the fastest mail train
   That run the Southern line
And when she pulled in, at Lynchburg, Virginia
   She was forty-seven minutes behind

Steve Brady, he was an engineerah (sic)
And a very brave man was he
Well, there're many good men have lost their life
   For the railroad company

When they give him his orders at Monroe, Virginia
   Said, "Steve, you's way behind.
This is not 38, but it's old 97,
You must put her in Spencer on time."

Steve, he smiled when he said to his black and dusty fireman
"Throw me in a little more coal
And as soon as we cross this White Oak Mountain
You can watch my driver roll."

It was mighty rough road from Lynchburg to Danville
The line on a 3-mile grade
It were on that hill where he lost his air brakes
You can see what a jump he made

Steve come down that hill makin' 90 miles an hour
   His whistle began to scream
Steve was found in the wreck with his hand upon the throttle
And scalded to death by the steam

Steve, he had a little wife and also two children
Who were lyin' at home in bed
They received the sad message saying, "Husband and father
Now'm is lyin' in North Danville, dead."

Now, ladies, you ought to let this be a warning
   This, from now and on
Never speak hard words to your true lovin' husband
They may leave you and never return

Edited to pick up correction from ScottN, 3/28/14

All best,
Johnm

Roy Bookbinder was an aquaintance of Pink Anderson and I believe that he has over the years had a number of PA songs in his repertoire.
If you go to www.roybookbinder.com (http://www.roybookbinder.com)you may be able to message Roy and get some lyrics out of him.
Good luck

Or Roy may drop in here, as he often does.

Welcome to Weenie Campbell, littledog.

A lot of us spent a week with Book last summer at Port Townsend, including a few late evenings, and he stops by every so often.

All for now.

Hi all,
Here are the lyrics to Pink's version of "The Boll Weevil", called simply "Boweevil" on the CD on which it appears, "The Blues Of Pink Anderson--Ballad and Folksinger, vol. 3", Prestige/Bluesville OBCCD-577-2.  Pink pronounces the insect's name "boweevah" throughout the song.  He backs himself out of C in standard tuning.  Boy, his time had a great snap to it!

https://youtu.be/mo3AWGypKjA

Woke up this mornin, woke up this mornin', heard somebody callin' me
Woke up this mornin', heard somebody callin' me
It must've been the mama weevah, that they call the stingeree

Boweevah here, boweevah there, boweevah everywhere
   Boweevah here, boweevah everywhere
I looked in my meal barrel, I found boweevah there

First time I seen boweevah, first time I seen him, he's on a cotton square
First time I saw him, he's on a cotton square
And next time I saw him, moved his whole family there

So the farmer took boweevah, he took boweevah, put him in a fryin' pan
He took boweevah, put him in a fryin' pan
Boweevah, he told the farmer, "Treated me like a natch'l man."

So, he took boweevah, he took boweevah, put him in a block of ice
He took boweevah, put him in a block of ice
So, boweevah, he told the farmer, "I think you treat me very nice."

   Repeat verse 2

Farmer aksed the merchant, he aksed the merchant, "How 'bout some meat and meal?"
He asked the merchant, "How 'bout some meat and meal?"
He said, "Get away from here, farmer!  You got boweevahs in your field."

Boweevah here, boweevah there, boweevah everywhere
   Boweevah here, boweevah everywhere
I looked in my cotton patch, I found boweevah there

Bo, yah, told the farmer, he told the farmer, "You can ride your Ford machine."
He told the farmer, "You can ride your Ford machine.
When I get through with your cotton patch, you can't even buy gasoline."

All best,
Johnm

Hi mianno,
Welcome to Weenie Campbell!  If you tune your guitar one whole step low (DGCFAD) and play along with the recording, you will have the chord progression and the position that Pink played it out of before the song stops playing.  Have fun with it.

I'm trying to piece together a couple of lines from Pink's "The Kaiser".
I've got most of it. It's really only the repeat refrain line that I'm struggling with, after "I hear them boys [something] Uncle Sam". Anyway, here's what I got. I've placed everything I'm not sure about in square brackets. Help much appreciated!

https://youtu.be/D5ExYi1oRfY

The Kaiser

Oh Kaiser said to the soldiers
Come on boys and go
If we conquer Europe
This world is ours you know
[I hear them?] boys
[all beat?] Uncle Sam

we have conquered little Belgium
and France will soon be ours
and all the rest will surrender
with all other powers

I hear them boys
[all beat?] Uncle Sam

oh Kaiser said to the soldiers
lets go up to the front
but the soldiers said to Kaiser
you will have to bear the blunt
you done gone too far
[with the?] Uncle Sam

[Defy the combined allers (allies)??]
[he holds em all a-hand??]
[but the rucktion [eruption?] from uncle sammy?]
the soldiers could not stand
the Dixie boys
and the Yankees too

oh Kaiser he said to his soldiers
put a pad inbetween my knees
and call for my physician
I believe I got the heart disease
I hear them boys
[All fear?] uncle sam
I hear them boys
[All fear?] uncle sam

Hi Matt, I'm generally hearing "of your Uncle Sam" and in the third verse "with your Uncle Sam."  I think you have verse 4 pretty close, it's a tough one.  Thanks, ScottN
Title: Re: Pink Anderson Lyrics
Post by: matt milton on July 18, 2012, 07:21:56 AM
right, I hadn't thought of "of your" uncle sam; reckon you're probably right.

the noise Pink makes just sounds like "ah fee", so I guess it's like "of yih" ? of your.

Still, I'd be grateful for any second, or third, opinions!

I mainly like the song because of that one line "they conquered little Belgium", which for some reason makes me smile. Apologies to any Belgians reading this! I know a song about World War I and imperialism shouldn't produce that reaction, especially a quite jingoistic/flag-waving song. And I know it's probably very immature of me to find that line so amusing.. but hey... the blues certainly aren't politically correct!

Been meaning to check collective wisdom on this for a long time.  I've always loved this one but could use some help in a couple spots.  I searched but didn't see that this had been done before.  I apologize if it has.

Every Day In The Week Blues

I woke up this morning
What you reckon was on my mind
My brown told me to leave but I told her I just wasn't gwine

Woke up singing this morning
When the clock was striking four
All I heard my baby crying daddy please don't go

Show me the train
You call the Cannonball
That's the train don't stop a'tall

My momma told me
When I was but a child
That there's good times now but terrible after a while

If you ride the Seaboard
I ride the L & N
Momma that's the train'll sure carry me in the wind

My momma told me
When I was four years old
You gonna be around a woman god bless your soul

Lord a mean old fireman
A cruel old engineer
Took my good girl and left me standing here

I'm gon' buy me a manger
I wanna carry it to the sky
So I can see my baby when she comes passing by

Well I took this brown skinned woman
From my best friend
And that rascal got lucky and stole her back again

I woke up this morning
Ah with the rising sun
Said go away day and let tomorrow come

Singing my blues
And I sing 'em when I please
I sing these blues to give my poor heart ease

Sometime I feel like
I done throw it away
Take this old guitar and whoop these blues all day

You must get your basket brownie
And make it into them woods
If you don't find an old apple you must make black bread good (??? puzzling line to me )

Yeah, I think the line would be "if you don't find an apple you'll have to make do with blackberries" in today's American English.

  Howdy folks,

This is one of my favorites from Pink Anderson and Simmie Dooley..  CC&O Blues.  I've been playing this for awhile and singing what I guess makes sense lyrically to me.  In the second verse, I assume the Seaboard refers to the old Seaboard Air Line Railroad.  I'm not sure about the rest of that line though.  Riding the blinds was a way to ride a train.  The fourth verse is the other spot I am really unsure of.  I put a few of my interpretations there.  Also, when Pink chimes in with his questions, it sounds to me like he usually says "boss", but it could be "boy".  I imagine the discerning ears here can help with the details.

https://youtu.be/y9WwpBDofaY

CC&O Blues

If you didn't want me, why don't you tell me so?
If you didn't want me, why don't you tell me so?
If you didn't want me, why don't you tell me so?
(What boss?)
I won't be hangin' 'round your door no more

Gonna ride the Seaboard either ride the blind
Gonna ride the Seaboard either ride the blind
Gonna ride the Seaboard either ride the blind
(What you gonna do?)
Gonna ride that train you call the CC line

I'm goin' up the country, and the time aint long
I'm goin' up the country, and the time aint long
I'm goin' up the country, and the time aint long
(What you going for?)
Going up the country to count the days I'm gone

The CC&O the best train I do ride
The CC&O the best train ought to ride
The CC&O the best train of the ride
(What about it boy?)
That's the train to ride to pacify your mind

Mama told me, so did Father too
Said, Mama told me, so did Father too
Said, Mama told me, so did Father too
(What'd they tell you boss?)
That CC road gonna be the death of you

(whoop it boy, whoop it)

I wonder where the engineer is goin'
I wonder where the engineer is goin'
I wonder where the engineer is goin'
(Why boss?)
I feel like riding, if it's all night long

Hey Devin. Great tune. In verse 2 I hear "either ride the blind" as well. Not sure if it's right but...

in 2.5 I hear "you call THAT CC line"

In the 3rd verse, 3.5 it does sort of sound like "TO count the days I'm gone" but I am not sure this makes sense. The usual formula would be along the lines of "you can count the days I'm gone" or something, no? Maybe "yuh count the days I'm gone." Anyway, not sure of it.

For the 4th verse, I hear "ah, to ride," with various pronunciations:

The CC&O, the best train, ah to ride
The CC&O, the best train, ah, to ride
The CC&O the best train, ah, to ride
(What about it boy?)
BEST train to ride to pacify your mind

p.s. That skillet inlay on yer website is great. ;)

Thanks for the reply, Uncle Bud.

Quote
in 2.5 I hear "you call THAT CC line"

I definitely agree there.

Quote
In the 3rd verse, 3.5 it does sort of sound like "TO count the days I'm gone" but I am not sure this makes sense

I also agree it doesn't quite make sense.  I like to think that he's playing with a familiar line with a little humor.  Going away just to count the days.  Standing here just to hold up this wall.  That sort of thing.  More likely he might've just slurred the line a little.

I've Got Mine is from Gospel Blues and Street Songs. There is another version on Medicine Show Man that has essentially the same lyrics. The only real change is that the sentence for playing craps drops from 9-18 months to 9-30 days.

Also anybody familiar with the slang Geordie / Jordy in other American blues songs?  I'm familiar with the British reference but hadn't heard it before in American slang.

Thanks,

I've Got Mine

Intro

I went down to a big crap game it certainly was against my will
I lost every doggone nickel I had but a greenback dollar bill
With a forty dollar bet laying on the floor and my buddy's point was nine
When the police come he caught all of us but I got mine

Yes I got mine let me tell ya I got mine
I grabbed that money out the back door I went flying'
Ever since that big crap game I've been a living' on chicken and wine
I'm a leader of the high society folks I got mine

And I went down to a turkey feast and that dinner was certainly fine
Fifteen minutes 'fore the table's set all the jitterbugs fell in line
When they brought them gobblers in on those Jodies I did shine
Talk about a rascal a grabbin' I got mine

Yes I got mine let me tell ya' I got mine
I grabbed that turkey by the wing out the window I went flyin'
I tried to make it to a hidin' place but I didn't get there in time
A hungry rascal grabbed me by the coat but I got mine

I know a barber shop it's over in town it's over on North Fourth Street
It's the onliest place on a Saturday night we gamblers care to meet
Some comes in for a haircut while others come for a scrap
But when you see me and my buddy up there we mean to shoot some crap

Hollerin' seven eleven won't you come come come
If you don't seven eleven dice I'm done done done
If I see the police 'fo' he sees me I'm gonna run run run
But I'm a leader of the high society folks I got mine

Yes I got mine what was it I got mine
I got it from all these good sports who been playing all the time
Some of the boys got eighteen months and some of the boys got nine
When they brought them stripes in the next morning I got mine

I went to my best gal's house last night the hour just about nine
I wasn't dressed up like Henry Ford but I was feelin' just as fine
I caught her sittin' in another rascal's lap I didn't like that sign
I told that Jody what I thought about him and I got mine

Yes I got mine let me tell ya I got mine
I grabbed my hat out the back door I went flyin'
That Jody grabbed a shotgun and he used it mighty fine
Talk about a rascal a runnin' men I got mine

I think it's Pink putting an extraneous "R" in "Jody." Look up "jody slang" or "jody the grinder" on Google.

Johnm transcribed The Titanic from Ballad and Folk Singer earlier in the thread. The Ship Titanic from Gospel Blues and Street Songs is essentially the same but has one additional verse at the beginning.

It was in the month of April, nineteen hundred and twelve
Listen to the story, that I'm going to tell

Wasn't it sad when the great ship went down

Well the Devil sat down and he cried like a new born child

If you got you one woman
Well you sure better get you five
'Cause two might quit you and the other three might die

I got a Monday woman
Works on Fourth and Main
I got a Tuesday woman brings me all her change

My Wednesday woman
Bring me whiskey and beer
I got a Thursday woman she raise sand if she catch me here

My Friday woman
Just won't treat me right
I got a Sa'day woman I declare wants me all night

My Sunday woman
Lays on my arm and sleep
You may know 'bout that I got a gal for every day in the week

I don't love no yellow woman
And I ain't crazy 'bout no brown
'Cause you can't tell the difference I declare when the sun go down

My old grandma and my grandpa
Both of 'em got old and grey
If grandpa hadn't a talked careful I wouldn't a been here today

I'm gonna sing this verse
I declare I ain't gonna sing no more
I'm gonna leave here directly I'm gonna walk and tell everything I know

Carolina Blues Man's version is pretty close to the same but has some additional verses / variations

I woke up this morning
Hmm a while 'fore day
You ought to see'd me grab the pillow where my baby used to lay

Mmm mama
What in the world is you tryin to do
Tryin to go away and leave me good as I done been to you

When your woman get buggish
Sometime she get very hard to rule
Take that woman to a buggy drive her like a Georgie mule

I'm gonna sing this verse for ya right now
Ain't gonna sing no more
I'm gonna get drunk directly tell everything I know

Thanks,

Hi Johnm - in Wreck Of the Old 97, the version on Gospel Blues and Street Songs is essentially the same.  I think in both versions though, line 8.3 is lost his "air brake" not "average" although I have clearly heard "average" used in other people's versions of the song.

Thanks,

Hi Scott,
That's a good catch, especially so long after the transcription was posted.  I will edit the original post and the Weeniepedia entry.  Thanks!
All best,

Hi John - thanks, I wish I'd have been tuned in back in 2006 but I'm glad someone hipped me to WC in 2011 :-)

There were some earlier songs in the thread that aren't in Weeniepedia yet (probably in various levels of completion):

CC&O (Pink and Simmie Dooley)
Every Day In The Week (Pink and Simmie)
The Kaiser
Travelin Man

Thanks,

Pink's version of John Henry is in Weeniepedia and looks to be from Ballad & Folk Singer. The version on Gospel Blues and Street Songs is very similar but provides three additional verses.

https://youtu.be/uWxx_asuN5c

John Henry said to his Shaker one day
Shaker you'd better pray
'Cause if I miss this here piece of steel
Tomorrow be your buryin day
Yes tomorrow be your buryin day
Yes to (guitar)

John Henry said to his captain one morning
Write me out my time
I can make more money on the Seaboard road
Then I can on the Southern line
Then I can on the Southern line (yeah)

John Henry went to the turn one day
Picked up his hammer to drive
Lord the rock was so tall and John Henry was so small
Lord he lay down his hammer and he cried
Lord he lay down his hammer and he cried
Lord he lay down his hammer and he (guitar)
Lord he (guitar) plat it again

Thanks,

Greasy Greens

Folks I'm just a man from New Orleans
Crazy 'bout them greasy greens
If I don't get 'em three times a day
I'll get mad and walk away

Them greens all I want my greens
Boy they just like oats
Soft and easy good and greasy
Crazy 'bout them greasy greens

Second fit

Way down south where I was born
They raised them good old greens and corn
Sweet potatoes bbbblack eyed peas
Green tomatoes and pecan trees

But them greens all I want my greens
Boy just won't don't
Soft and easy good and greasy
Crazy 'bout them greasy greens

[xxx xxx] fit

Mama you can cook your lima bean
you can cook somethin I ain't never seen
But Honey when you fix ya table for me
Ah don't fix nothin but (guitar)

Them greens all I want my greens
Ah they won't stop for the red light
Soft and easy good and greasy
Crazy bout them greasy greens

That meat you knew must be fat
Cook them greens so greasy like that
If you don't use nothin but natural lean
You can't cook no good greasy greens

Them greens all I want my greens
Boy just won't 'have
Soft and easy good and greasy
Crazy 'bout them greasy greens

Last fit

I don't care what your mama don't 'low
Bring them greens here anyhow
Soon as I get 'em Honey I'll be gone
Your mammie won't know that you put them on

Them greens all I want my greens
Boy they just won't don't
Soft and easy good and greasy
How they love them greasy greens. What. Man.

The version on Medicine Show Man has an additional verse:

I see greens upon your shelf
You must be saving them for someone else
I hear hissp in your pot
Honey how much greasy greens you got

'N' them greens all I want my greens
They just won't don't
Soft and easy good and greasy
Wild about them greasy greens. Eat em up then

From Gospel Blues and Street Songs (the version of In The Jailhouse Now from Medicine Show Man is essentially the same with no extra verses):

He's In The Jailhouse Now

https://youtu.be/21uhI8T2hVk

I had an old friend named Campbell
Campbell used to steal and gamble
He made his living cheating all the while yes sir
Now he had a little game he called euchre, blackjack, dice and poker
He thought he was the smartest dude in town

But I just found out Monday
Campbell got locked up Sunday
They got him in the jailhouse down in town
They got Campbell in the jail and got no one to go his bail
That judge he won't accept no fine, they got him

He's in the jailhouse now
He's in the jailhouse now
I told Campbell once or twice stop playing cards and tryin to shoot dice
He's in that big house now

I remember last election
The white folks was in action
Tryin to get theyself a President mmm hmm
A colored man by the name of Bill Austin
He walked from New York to Boston
Just to find a colored settlement

Now my brother Bill's a voter
Bill's a great promoter
He's always looking for some good advice
So they told Bill to go to the poll
And vote for both [xxx] and [xxx]
Instead of voting once, the fool voted twice. That settle it

Bill's on the rock pile now
He's on the rock pile now
I told Bill to go 'head home
And let them white folk's business alone
Bill's on the choin gum (chain gang) now

I walked into town last Friday
I met a girl they call Ida
I thought she was the prettiest girl in town, I sure did
She begin to call me Honey
And I begin to spend my money
We walked into a cafe and sat down

Folks I made sure I were in it
I was spending every minute
Buying this old liquor and wine by the quart, sure was
But when I went to pay that man
I found that lady's hand
Right in my pocket where my money was, they got her

She's in the graveyard now
She's in the graveyard now
I told the judge to his face
That woman's hand was out of its place
She's in the ape-yard now

From Carolina Medicine Show Hokum And Blues With Baby Tate (mislabeled on download album as Greasy Greens)

Mutton Stew

If you want to get to Heaven let me tell you what to do
Grease your feet with mutton stew
If the Devil get at ya with his greasy hand
You'll slide right over in the Promise Land
Go easy
So greasy

Make up the bed gal and make it up nice
Old Preacher Johnson gonna be here tonight
He's a chicken eater
He likes cake
He like the sisters, too

I was standin right up by the mantle piece
Standin right up by a bucket of grease
I greased my feet with axel grease
I went slippin up and down the mantle piece
Huntin matches
Cigarette [ducks]
Chewin tobacco

I's down in the wild wood sittin on a log
Finger on the trigger and the eye on the hog
I pulled the trigger and the gun said flip
I went on the hog with all of my grip
Said scrape it
Eatin hog eye
I love chit'lin

I was down the henhouse here the other night
The moon wa'n't shinin I didn't have no light
I meant to grab a chicken and I grabbed a goose
And the white folks hollered about turning me loose
I rode bushes
Jumpin gulleys
Dodgin bullets

I was down at the henhouse on my knees
I thought I heard a chicken sneeze
Nothin but a rooster was sayin his prayers
And givin out the hymns to the hens upstairs
[Its] singin
Rooster's crowin
That the way they [xxx]

Ain't no need in me workin so hard
W'n I got a woman in the white folk's yard
She give me then chicken and she give me the egg
And she think I'm workin but I'm layin in the bed
Havin a good time
Talkin about her
To other women

Scott, a few suggestions:

In "Greasy Greens" it's "just won't don't." I'm not exactly sure what it means but it pops up in some other numbers - I believe Blind Blake sings it in "Too Tight."

And instead of "just want hay" try "just won't 'have" for behave.

I think he does say "fit" between the verses.

And in"Jailhouse" I believe that missing bit is something lie "And vote for both [name] and [name]"

Pink pronounces "chain gang" very oddly.

Should be "honey" where you have "homey"

"Buying THIS OLD LIQUOR AND WINE by the quart"

And the last line I think is "ape-yard"

Hi Chris - thanks so much - I'm always thankful for your great ear and extensive knowledge of the canon :-)  I made the suggested changes.

In Mutton Stew I'm pretty sure I hear a reference to cigarette "ducks."  Chesterfield by Buddy Moss (and I think John Jackson as well) also seems to reference them "Smoke one in the morning, one at night, choke your "duck" and hold the other too / two tight."  Do you know of other lyrics that reference this and/or is this common slang among smokers?

Thanks again,

Googling brought up "duck's ass" that means the end of a cigarette that is soggy from saliva, I would assume it comes from that.

You're going berserk, Scott, well done!  It's worth mentioning that "Baby I'm Going Away" is Pink's version of "Catfish"; a similar version was done by Baby Tate, and they both sound like they came from Tommy McClennan's "Deep Blue Sea Blues".  They all have in common no mention of catfish.  And "I Had My Fun" is "Going Down Slow".
All best,
Johnm

She saves her lovin early in the morn
Just for me ho yeah
Saves her lovin early in the morn
Just for me ho yeah
Saves her lovin just for me
She my ba(by) can't you see

Just for me ho yeah
Saves her lovin just for me
She's my ba(by) can't you see
I got a woman way cross town
She's good to me ho yeah

The version on Medicine Show Hokum And Blues With Baby Tate is essentially the same although he only sings verse 1 and 2 and doesn't repeat verse 2 as verse 3. Also, in verse 2 he enunciates the full "baby" instead of "ba"(by) from the version on Medicine Show Man

Chicken

https://youtu.be/KkF7U6Amntc

I try something here the other night
I'm sure gonna try some more
I'm gonna try the same thing here in this town
And I know I'll be a winner sho
I put my sack right on my back
Walked out late one night
I fill't that sack full of fow-l
And I did not have to fight

They was chicken chicken
He can go up in the balloon
Chicken chicken
Chicken he can hide behind the moon
Chicken chicken
I ain't gon let you be
I got a forty dollar warrant for the chicken tonight
He can't roost to high for me

I had no use for a chicken
Since one night late last Spring
A settin' hen bit my partner
Cause he stepped on her wing
The police come to see us 'bout it
And they slapped us all around
I never 'spect to rest contented now
'Til I eat every chicken in town

Yes chicken I love em too chicken
He can go up in the balloon
Chicken chicken
He can hide behind the moon
Chicken shop
I ain't gonna let you be
I got a forty dollar warrant for the chicken tonight
He can't roost too high for me

I love my chicken indeed I do
To your hen roost I will go
If you got any fat put it settin' up high
It'll soon be mine you know
The Chief Police and the big bulldog
We're sleepin side by side
I grabbed me a chicken by the wing
And through the crack I cry

I don't care if you don't never wake up
This fowl was in my hand
You don't stand no [sure will catch a]
This respec'able roguish man
I'm not scared of your knives and gun
Much less that lazy pup
You can keep on sleepin while the rogue is creepin
We don't care if you don't ever wake up

Yes it's chicken chicken
He can go up in the balloon
Chicken chicken
He can hide behind the moon but I'll find him
Chicken shop
I ain't gonna let you be
I got a forty dollar warrant for the chicken tonight
He can't roost too high for me

Well there's so much trouble in this land
I don't know how'r I feel
Look like all a my friends around me
Have learnt how to steal
When they steal a chicken
The chicken he'll holler just like a goat
When that chicken holler he'll twist his neck
And then shove him up under his coat

Then it's chicken chicken
He can go up in the balloon
Chicken chicken
He can hide behind the moon
Chicken shoo
I ain't gon' let you be
I got a forty dollar warrant for the chicken tonight
He can't roost too high for me

https://youtu.be/W5IbbFW-KMY

God knows I'm gonna walk through the street of the City
Where my captain have gone on before
I'm gonna sit down on the bank of the river
And I won't be back no more

My mother she have gone on and left me
And my father he have gone on before
And I promised the good Lord I would meet them
On the King-Dom [fairer] shore

God knows I'm gonna walk through the street of the City
Where my captain have gone on before
I'm gonna sit down on the bank of the river
And I won't be back no more

Some day my trouble will be over
And my trial will be over too
I'm gonna walk through the streets with my captain
Mother and I want you to be there too

Lord knows I'm gonna walk through the streets of the City
Where my captain he have gone on before
I'm gonna sit down on the banks of the river
Mother and I ain't comin' back no more

Re: The Kaiser lyrics - in reply number 14 of this thread the lyrics were never clarified "Xxx Xxx Uncle Sam."  The new Smithsonian Folkways Cd noted by Stuart today has this same song with a different title "The Boys of Your Uncle Sam" which seems to fit the missing part of the lyric.

Thanks,

Hi all,
In Pink Anderson's "South Forest Boogie", on the page previous to this one in this thread, at: https://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=2742.msg86494#msg86494 , I think the missing line in the second verse is "down to Lureen's Grill", and the second line in the last verse is "who composed this song".  I think the transcription is pretty much right on the money apart from that, and I have entered it in Weeniepedia.
All best,
Johnm
Title: Last verse of Pink Anderson's "She Knows How to Stretch It"
Post by: jake_fantom on September 06, 2020, 06:07:54 AM
I'm trying to figure out the very last verse of Pink Anderson's "She Knows How to Stretch It." It's really the very first line of the last verse that is giving me headaches. You can find a video of Pink's performance here: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3bttc9

Thanks for any help or clues you can provide!

Hi jake_fantom,
It sounded to me like Pink sang:
She cooked it faster than anybody you ever did see
I wouldn't tell a baby what that gal told me
All best,
Johnm

Thanks for giving it a listen, Johnm. After conferring with a couple of local blues fans, I believe the lyrics are:

The very best advice I ever did see
I wouldn't-a told baby what the gal told me
She got to learn how to stretch it... etc.

You don't know, you don't know, you don't know my mind, doggone it
You don't know, you don't know my mind
And when you see me laugh, laughin' just to keep from cryin'

Yes, I feed my baby, on a sweet jelly roll, took my shoes off my feet, let me out in the cold
You don't know, you don't know my mind
And when you see me laugh, laughin' just to keep from cryin'

Honey, you don't know, you don't know, you don't know my mind, doggone it
You don't know, you don't know my mind
And when you see me laugh, laughin' just to keep from cryin'

Yes, I asked my babe, could she stand to see me cry, yes, yes, daddy, I could stand to see you die
You don't know, you don't know my mind
And when you see me laugh, laughin' just to keep from cryin'

Way last winter when the time was rough, I was out in the coal mine struttin’ my stuff
You don't know, you don't know my mind
And when you see me laugh, laughin' just to keep from cryin'

Honey, you don't know, you don't know, you don't know my mind, we-he babe
You don't know, you don't know my mind
And when you see me laugh, laughin' just to keep from cryin'
