Tampa Red – Vocals, Guitar Johnny Jones - Vocals, Piano Walter Horton - Harmonica Willie Lacey - Guitar Ransom Knowling - Bass Odie Payne - Drums December 1, 1953 Chicago, Ilinois Piano in E Well now, the big stars are falling, it can’t be very long before day Well now, the big stars are falling, it can’t be very long before day When day begin to break, it may drive your blues away Now, the saddest hours, is just between daylight and dark The saddest hours, is just between daylight and dark When the one that you love, has said goodbye and gone You goin’ to roll and tumble, your eyes are goin’ to fill with tears You goin’ to roll and tumble, your eyes are goin’ to fill with tears She may be gone just a few hours, it’ll seem like a thousand years You goin’ to grieve and worry, your heart is goin’ to ache you so You goin’ to grieve and worry, your heart is goin’ to ache you so Because your love have said goodbye, you’ll never see her face no more Thanks for posting that, Harry, what a great track! Man, did that band have heavy time! I love the singing on the track, and my only wish is that Walter Horton had been hotter in the mix. Though come to think of it, having him in the background that way probably did end up helping the ensemble sound.
All best, Johnm Grievin' And Worryin' Blues
DG and R and Document Records have different piano players for the session. I never heard of Henry "45" Scott. I recently purchased a CD version of Tampa Red's "Don't Jive Me" album on Prestige Bluesville, recorded in Chicago in 1960, and am so glad that I picked it up. I know that this album and it's companion album, "Don't Tampa With The Blues", are often spoken of slightingly by Tampa Red fans and compared unfavorably with his early recordings. I can see being a bit disappointed if you're a particular fan of his slide playing, of which there is none on these albums, but I'm still finding that I enjoy them thoroughly for a couple of reasons--first of all, his singing throughout these records is beautiful, so plaintive and soulful, and you have the feeling that at that time of his life he knew first-hand what there was to be blue about. Secondly, his guitar playing, while not flashy, is beautifully conceived and is full of original touches. And even his occasional kazoo playing, sometimes a sticking point for blues fans, does not have the manic, SHOWBIZ energy that that instrument can sometimes communicate, but instead seems more the kind of thing you might hear a veteran New Orleans trumpeter play, leaving a lot of space, and phrasing with taste and restraint. Because the attached video has the entire album on it, I will transcribe two songs here. First is his epic version of "How Long" that opens the program and the second is the title track, which starts at 9:04 on the video. "How Long" is 5:30 long, and Tampa Red sounds like he could have kept coming up with new verses into the next century. Here it is: INTRO How long, babe, how long, has that evenin' train been gone? How long, babe, how long, baby, how long? Babe, sometime I think you love me, 'gain I think you don't, sometime I think you gon' leave me, and again I think you won't But how long, babe, how long, baby, how long? I love you, baby, and you know it's true, so how could you treat me, the way you do So long, so long, mm-baby, so long? Now it's 12 o'clock in the midnight, by the clock hangin' on the wall, you used to come home 'round midnight, but, now you don't come home at all And how long, baby, how long, mm-baby, how long You know I love you, baby, you know it's true, so how can you misuse me, and treat me the way you do So long, so long, baby, so long? Baby, you went and left me, you didn't even say a word, it wasn't nothin' I done, baby, only something that you heard But how long, babe, how long, baby, how long? Man, you done took my woman, but I'm not mad at you, just like you took her 'way from Tampa, somebody gonna take her 'way from you So long, babe, so long, mm-baby, so long Sometime I get to thinkin', thinkin' to myself, how could you misuse me, and leave me for someone else? How long, babe, how long, baby, how long If I could holler, just like, like a mountain jack, I would go up on the mountain, call my baby back But how long, babe, how long, baby, how long That is all, baby, I have to say to you, I know you've been unfaithful, your love wasn't never true But how long, babe, how long, baby, how long Baby, you should be mindful, of everything you do, 'cause what you doin' to me, baby, somebody gonna do to you How long, babe, how long, baby, how long Babe, I've been waiting, mailman bring no mail, why, I'm just drifting, like a ship without a sail Mm-how long, babe, how long, baby, how long Tampa Red accompanied "Don't Jive Me" out of E position in standard tuning, as he did the version of "How Long" and the greater portion of songs on the album. I like the reminder in the chorus, "'Cause jivin' is lyin'" INTRO Baby, I been waiting, a long time for you, now come on and tell me, what you going to do REFRAIN: Don't jive me, baby, 'cause jivin' is lyin' You be true to me, or I may be false to you Baby, if jive is a game, you'd like to play, forget about me, babe, or either change your way, and REFRAIN: Don't jive me, baby, jivin' is lyin' You be true to me, or I may be false to you I give you my money, let you have your fun, but when it come to lovin', you bet' not give 'way none, and REFRAIN: Don't jive me, baby, jivin' is a-lyin' You be true to me, or I may be false to you Nicke is a nickel, a dime is a dime, I don't want your jelly, mama, if you don't want mine REFRAIN: Don't jive me, baby, you know, jivin' is lyin' You be true to me, or I may be false to you SOLO W/KAZOO If you don't love me, baby, don't you hang around, just let me know, baby, and I'll leave this town REFRAIN: But just don't you jive me, mama, because jivin' is a-lyin' Be true to me, or I will be false to you CODA All best, Johnm Hi all,
Tampa Red recorded "Turpentine Blues" at a session in Chicago on May 7, 1932, accompanying himself in Vestapol tuning and utilizing a slide. It is one of the surprisingly few solo numbers he recorded in the pre-War period. As was customary for him, his playing is impeccable. Here is "Turpentine Blues": INTRO Turpentine's all right, providing that wages are good Turpentine is all right, providing that wages are good But I can make more money now, out somewhere choppin' cordwood Turpentine business ain't like it used to be Turpentine business ain't like it used to be I can't make enough money now, to even get on a spree I ain't gon' work no more, I tell you the reason why I ain't gon' work no more, tell you the reason why Because everybody wants to sell, and nobody want to buy You can work in the field, you can work at the sawmill, too You can work in the field, you can work at the sawmill, too But you can't make no money, at nothin' you try to do So Lordy, please tell me what we turpentine people are gonna do Lordy, please tell me what we turpentine people gonna do We may work one week, but but we got to lay off for a mont' or two Turpentine is like dice, you shoot you are bound to lose Turpentine is just like dice, you shoot you are bound to lose That's the reason why, I got those turpentine blues CODA All best, Johnm Hi all,
Tampa Red recorded "Western Bound Blues" at the same session at which he recorded "Turpentine Blues", accompanying himself out of Vestapol tuning with a slide, as per usual in that era. Here is "Western Bound Blues": INTRO If you lose your money, don't lose your mind If you lose your money, don't lose your mind And if you lose sweet woman, why, buddy, you better not mess with mine If you ever been down, I know you know just how I feel If you ever I been down, you know just how I feel Why, I feel just like a darn soldier, out 'cross the battlefield Baby, I'm going out West, and don't want to leave you behind I'm going out West, and I don't want to leave you behind Because I'm afraid that when I return, baby, I'm afraid that you won't be mine (Spoken: Aw shucks, you know what I"m talking about) SOLO (Spoken: Then, how you think I'd feel to go away and come back . . . and find you in another guy's arms? I'd take a brickbat and break your neck. And I don't mean maybe, either.) What's the use of walkin', boys, when there's a freight train goin' your way? What's the use of walkin', and there's a freight train a-goin' your way? (Spoken: I heard the thing blow) If my mind don't change, I'm western bound today Put your arms around me, baby, just like a circle around the sun Put your arms around me, baby, like a circle around the sun That's the way, baby, Papa Red wants his lovin' done (Spoken: You hear me talkin' and I don't mean maybe, and that's all) All best, Johnm It Hurts Me Too
