I'm very sorry to hear of Joao Gilberto's death, though he certainly lived a life.  What a thoroughly musical person he was; his ability to phrase vocally, independent of what he was doing on the guitar, was amazing.  His album "Live At Montreaux", a concert performance featuring just him singing and playing is one of my favorite recordings ever by a self-accompanied singer.  Miles Davis is reputed to have said of him that he would be happy to listen to him read the phone book.  He was certainly the prime influence on my Brazilian playing.
