Daisy Martin, "Feelin' Blues"
« on: October 10, 2018, 11:51:16 AM »
Hi, folks. I'd appreciate some ears on the classic blues song below. I've bolded/italicized the bits that I'm least sure of.

Thanks,
David

Feelin? Blues

by W. H. Garrell and W. C. Handy

as recorded by Daisy Martin
c. late July 1923

Does anybody, does anybody feel like me?
Does anybody, does anybody feel like me?
Now if they do, I know the feeling is sad as can be.

?Cause I?ve been moanin?, and I?ve been groanin? all night long.
And I?ve been sighin?, and I?ve been cryin? all night long.
The kind of feelin?s reelin? me that someone somewhere is doing wrong.

?Cause I?ve been here, I?ve been there.
In fact, I?ve really been most everywhere
Trying to find the man of mine, and you can blame me ?cause it ain?t no crime.

For to look all around for your sweet lovin? brown.
Now I?m going home and take a snooze
To try to wear away a thing they call the feelin? blues.

I?m tired of foolin? around with one who don?t love me.
I?m tired of foolin? around with one who don?t love me.
If I will find a way to leave him, if he cannot agree.

?Cause I?ve been here, I?ve been there.
In fact, I?ve really been most everywhere
Trying to find a man of mine, and you can blame me ?cause it ain?t no crime.

For to look all around for your sweet lovin? brown.
Now I?m going home and take a snooze
To try to wear away a thing they call the feelin? blues.

Hi David R,
I think you have it, in the main.  The only things I heard differently were in the long italicized line:

BUT I will find a way to leave him, if WE can not agree

And in the refrain:

Trying to find the man of mine, and you CAN'T blame me, 'cause it ain't no crime

It sounds like she is singing "reeling'" in the other place, but it doesn't make a lot of sense.
all best,
Johnm

Thanks! I certainly agree that CAN'T makes more sense, but try as I might, I can't hear the N'T.

Hi David R,
I think the last time she sings it, it is pretty clear.
all best,

I think that's right, John, and although it's a bit of an odd usage to use reeling as a transitive verb, the dictionary does have it, so I would think it means "that feeling's knocking her for a loop," so to speak.

For the "reelin me" line I'm hearing something more like:

"The kind of feelings really mean that someone somewhere's doing wrong."

This would make sense is she was singing "These kind of feelings really mean that someone somewhere's doing wrong," but I hear "The" instead of "These."

Just a thought from a different set of ears.

I had considered that, too, TenBrook. If so, she really swallows the end of "mean," but she does that some other places, too. Certainly a reasonable and even more probable parsing of the line.
