I wish I could have heard him in the late 30s when his voice was (for me) at its peak. I am just grateful to have seen the performers I did. With Skip James at the top of the list.
I would really like to have seen Smith Casey. +1 Was just talking about him this weekend. Chills. minuszero
I would really like to have seen Smith Casey. Sorry if I'm derailing this thread, but I can't find anything from Smith Casey. Can someone pls. help out with where I might find (a) recording/s I can't find anything from Smith Casey. Texas Field Recordings on Document: http://weeniecampbell.com/mambo/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=70&Itemid=42 +1 for Smith Casey, who is the reason I bought that Document compilation. If memory serves me well, I heard a track on the Weenie Juke and then had to buy it. Some other good stuff on there as well. Highly recommended.
Great thread. Top of my list would be Robert Pete Williams at Portland University, April 20th 1970. Next, Son House at the 100 Club in London, July 14th 1970. Finally, Fred McDowell at the Tacoma Court coffeehouse, April 14th 1971.
Willie Walker, and Josh White at Cafe Society on a double bill with Billie Holiday, digging at my red diaper roots.
I second Willie Walker. I'd also love to have seen Richard "Rabbit" Brown, and Rob Cooper & Andy Boy of Santa Fe fame.
