Title: ***** EuroWeenie 2011 ****
Post by: Richard on September 10, 2010, 09:48:50 AM
Just to,let you know I intend making a trip over to have look at a few hotels in about a month so would ask that if you think you will be attending to put a post here so I can have some idea of numbers for this grande eventette.

As to dates, I know not Although it's going to be around mid-end March 2011 and I am leaving that to Phil to sort out so it does not conflict with and EBA events or whatever.

Keep watching this space and don't forget to register your interest  :D

Easter is very late in 2011 so we may be able to move Euroweenie to a later date in the hopes of better weather. I'm suggesting  1/2nd April or 8/9th April according to hotel availability.

Let's hear how these suit.

All being well, I'll be there.  I'll chase up rick218 as well, who was unable to attend this year due to family illness.

I will be coming along again. 1/2 April suits me better.

Thanks

Looks like we've got a quorum!

Let's aim for 1/2 April subject to hotel availability. Go Richard!!!!

Are we looking at the New Forest area again or branching out to a new location?
Title: Re: ***** EuroWeenie 2011 ****
Post by: Richard on September 14, 2010, 06:52:42 AM
Let's aim for 1\2 April weekend, I think the New Forest area again seems to suit with the poximity of the aeroporto, si?

I have started a trawl around the net for hotels and starting is the hard part, we may end up at last years but there might be something a little less faded!

Title: Re: ***** EuroWeenie 2011 ****

For what it's worth I thought faded was good.

I agree with Scratchy. Also the staff at the hotel were friendly and welcoming. You could try for a better deal as we are returning guests. But if you can find something as good that's even cheaper...
Title: Re: ***** EuroWeenie 2011 ****
Post by: Norfolk Slim on September 15, 2010, 02:44:08 AM
I agree with that.  Last year's place was fine (though I wasnt particularly impressed with the food).  If we can do better, then great, but theres certainly no need to look too hard just for the sake of it.

Would be nice to have a bar a bit closer to the function room though!

Simon - you can't have heard the news. No alcoholic drinks next year. You know how it is, rules is rules. Which reminds me, how did Lewis sneak that banjo-thing in this year? And why did I like what he did with it?

Yes, location was the best thing about the KIngs WhatNot in WhereEverItWas the year before. One of the reasons I thought ti worth a look, be nice to be able to find a touch of civilisation within easy walking distance.

Worth asking Bobalong or Bunker Hill - they seem to know the area pretty well? By the way - heard that Natterjack had moved to York. Now there's a nice place!
Title: Re: ***** EuroWeenie 2011 ****
Post by: Richard on September 16, 2010, 12:50:47 PM
I think Bobalong follows our witterings.... you out there Bob?

I am sure Natterjack will make the effort... won't you?

Title: Re: ***** EuroWeenie 2011 ****
Post by: Parlor Picker on September 17, 2010, 01:04:50 AM
Completely and utterly irrelevant, but there's an interesting feature on Natterjack's dad in the new Sussex Wildlife Trust magazine.

Natterjack may be too busy soaking up Yorkshire (t'biggest an' t'best) culture to quit his post for a weekend.
Title: Re: ***** 1-2 April 2011 EuroWeenie - Finalised *****
Post by: Richard on October 26, 2010, 08:05:46 AM
:)   Okeh weenies this is what I have tentatively agreed... same hotel as last year and the weekend is now fixed as Friday 01 - Saturday 02 April 2011.

Hotels rates as before and with only a ?5 increase which we can't really complain about. I realise it's faded country house glory and it would be nice to be able to eat elsewhere, but they have given us a good rate compared to everything else around and we do get a free function room for the two nights.

Twin/double rooms to include Full English Breakfast, Table d?hote Dinner and VAT at ?125.00 per room per day - that price is for two people.

For single occupancy the rate for Dinner, Bed and Breakfast will be ?78.00.

>>>> Could you please give me an indication that you will be attending as I promised the manager I would confirm with him by the end of this week and have provisionally held 12 rooms, so if I know we have at least half of them taken we will be onto a safe bet  :-X

Please do NOT book yet or through this link as you will not get the agreed rate, I will put up the hotels direct tel number shortly.

Title: Re: ***** EuroWeenie 2011 ****
Post by: Norfolk Slim on October 27, 2010, 12:50:09 AM
Should be there.

It did occur to me that we could drive / taxi into town one evening for a more exciting meal, but I guess that would mess with the inclusive rate and get very complicated- so all good.
Title: Re: ***** EuroWeenie 2011 ****
Post by: Parlor Picker on October 27, 2010, 01:12:46 AM
I'll be there, all being well. Mrs. Parlor Picker will not, having commented that one Weenie Weekend was enough for her(!). I'll chase up rick218.
Title: Re: ***** EuroWeenie 2011 ****
Post by: Richard on October 27, 2010, 12:37:48 PM
Thanks for that weenies and please keep adding your intention to attend to this thread.

From the look of it we should OKeh and I will ask them to hold 10 rooms initially as we did last year. I will email them tomorrow to confirm the rates and say it's all go, then once it's confirmed from their end I'll dig out the phone number and you can all get booking direct :)

NS as for a meal out, I agree it would be nice but since we seem to be geting the rooms at about 2/3 the going rate elsewhere, including the free function rooms I think politically we should eat there - it wasn't that bad was it... or was it  :-X

PP I can't imagine why Mrs PP would not wish to attend, especially as I heard she was a closet banjo player  :P

Richard, and all of you UK weenies - I think this is so cool that Euroweenie is turning out to be a regular event and that getting organized for the next one seems so easy to do!  And given the time, money, yadda yadda - I  really do plan to attend some year.  So keep up the good work and good vibe!  Very impressive!

Too kind gentlemen and weenies, credit to Mr Blueshome as well for it is he that keeps nagging me to do it  ;D

I have not heard back from the hotel as yet, but am sure there will be no problems, I'll post again when you can start reserving your suites..

Note the tel number is now corrected!!!

Well, here go, EuroWeenie lives yet again  :)

As usual I have heard nothing back from the hotel - why is it always me always doing the confirmation - however, let's ignore that and just start booking ourselves in  :P

The rates as I have agree are -

Twin/double rooms to include Full English Breakfast, Table d?hote Dinner and VAT at ?125.00 per room per day - that price is for two people.

For single occupancy the rate for Dinner, Bed and Breakfast will be ?78.00.

Please ring the hotel direct 01590 - 643911 to book and ensure you quote the agreed rate.

Do NOT use the booking agency as on this web page http://www.oxfordhotelsandinns.com/OurHotels/SouthLawn

That's about it folks, it would help if you could post here just to say you have booked, otherwise if I don't see you before I shall look forward to next April!

Well done Mr.T!

Once we have a better idea of the guest list we can devise some kind of programme, no doubt including un-natural acts with National guitars and more torment from the Prof.

This does present two problems young Harvey    :o  in that who will Norfolk Slim have to imbibe with and that the drop in alcohol sales may well effect our room rates.

On the plus side, with wifely encouragement and less red wine consumed, we may get a tune out of him!

If the weather's okay theres lots of nice things to do round there.  If its not, she's sure going to be grumpy after a day in a faded function room listening to intense debate about the relevance of Banjo to the country blues

And next year it would be nice if any of our pals from mainland Europe could join us. I won't mention the obvious names, but I know we have members in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany and Austria - and probably other countries that don't immediately come to mind.

After all, we seem to refer to the event as Euroweenie, when in reality it probably should be Britweenie, but that just doesn't sound so good.

Well guys, it looks like you're going to have to change the name to Worldweenie. It seems I shall be joining you this year, with my 'Rider (  ;) ) by my side. Seems my wife has made arrangements to tour Turkey with a woman from Totness, so we'll sort of be in the neighbourhood and I thought I'd drop in, L-00 in hand.

Let me know if there is anything you'd like me to bring from Canada, besides the common sense and charm I have in such abundance.

I'd much rather have a live session with Richard than a DVD - surely that's the whole point of our get-together?  Was in two minds about bringing my lap machine, but a short workshop with Richard would definitely encourage me to pack the thing.

Edit: Sorry, forgot to mention - glad to hear old Scratchy's on the mend.

Finally got off my backside and booked...

Now- to start planning the instrument list:
5 string banjo, 6 string banjo, Ukulele.  Not going to have much room for guitars :(

We'll fit Richard into the programme  (I want a live lesson myself), but I still urge him to bring copies of the dvd for future reference, they are very useful and inimitably presented.

Slim, bring all the junk you like it's at your own risk. You, Graham and Parlor (sic) Picker can organise your own uke convention later. As for the Devil's work, I believe Guernsey welcomes b***os.

Im thinking of bringing a big noisy reso and playing some slide this year.

Well there we have it, by popular request I shall cobble something together. Actually, having thought about that statement I can tell you now what we shall be doing, we'll be in open G and I doubt if we will be learning any songs  :o  but, we be learning a few basics moves with an emphasis on scales, did I say scales   ::)  oh, sorry so I did  :P

For those that have seen my infamous vids they know what to expect, but for for those that haven't you will need some form of guitar without to too low an action and some form of bar - a heavy slide is probably quite sufficient, I have no objection to sllde banjo and\or uke provided you play them somewhere else  :D

On the health front may I congratulate Prof Scratch on his recovery and imagine by now he will doubtless be hard at it perfecting his masterclass in soft crofter's croft. Personally, my bypass of several years back was reverting to more of a country lane so I have just returned from a major cardiac rebuild especially so I have the necessary impetus to do this class  ;)  Actually it wasn't half as bad as I thought since they gave me double the dose of intravenous vallium and I was flying high above the whole procedure, what's that song about being a viper?

Title: Re: ***** EuroWeenie 2011 ****

The intravenous valium seems to have been slow-release. Sure they didn't spill some acid into the syringe?

Careful there, Richard.  A neighbor of ours once had intravenous valium for a surgical procedure.  On the way home from the hospital, before the valium had worn off, his wife talked him into buying a new car and a trip to Ireland!

Now, amazingly it seems we have eleven weenies signed up to attend this great event, so I think we really need one more to make it an even dozen which makes it easier for the bands out of the hat.

Where's that newt catcher for isnstance ???  So come on, roll up, roll up... there must be somebody else out there who if he isn't certified yet, could well be by the end of the weekend... dj what about you beaming down for the lap class?

Just a reminder to Euroweenie attendees that you need to have that Big Bill piece down in good time, we have high expectations and will not make any exceptions short of of loss of limb (yes, this means you too Parlor Picker).

Good news! The substantial prize for the blues quiz has now been obtained at great expense and is awaiting gift wrapping by Mrs.Blueshome.

Also, I've heard that Natterjack is  giving  newt hunting lessons in the Forest that weekend (yes really!) and so will drop in on Friday. We are also to be joined by Will Greener, one of London's top harp players (EBA-ers will know him) to give a bit of variety from the onslaught of stringed instruments.

On a more serious note (note the pun) as regards the hotel is there anyone out there who will reguire special extra vegan\veggie type food over and above what was on offer last time? If so let me know and I will warn the hotel so they can get an extra bag of nuts in.

Whilst on the subject of dining, the hotel are assuming that all those booked in will be eating there on both the Friday and Saturday night. I realise it's not quite haute cuisine and it would be nice to go out to a Chinese en mass like we did before, but on the other hand by agreeing to eat there it keeps the room rate down (certainly by New Forest rates!) and we do get the function room for free.

By the way Harvey, is The Lady Harvey still going to risk it? Brave girl if you ask me  ;D

Extremely hard, if, like me, you haven't got a clue. I'll play the one chord I know behind Richard (preferably with me in the next room). You're all forgetting I'm only a fairly inept rhythm guitarist who can't sing. I may have to take on Bunker Hill's role of observer this year as he can't make it.

I will again, if you like, take snaps of the performances as I did last year.

I went downstairs earlier and played that (more or less) (sort of Guitar Shuffle) on fingerpicked ukulele. Are you volunteering for a duet? Go on, then I won't get lumbered with Blueshome ( :D). Alternatively I could play with Norfolk Slim, pretend he's my long-lost son and I'm holding back to give him a chance.

Please note thusfar I have avoided the temptation to respond with "go forth and multiply" or words to that effect...

Great weekend - thanks also from me to Richard, Scratchy and Blueshome for their efforts. Highlights of the weekend for me were the playing of Capt. Bliss aka Will Greener, who is possibly the best harp player I've ever seen live,Scratchy's monster 12-string and raucous wooden Triolian guitars and Diamond Dac's Broonzy piece which was gentle, understated, yet full of integrity. Of course it's always great from a social point of view - seeing the lads again.

PP- I think you are probably perceived as the "writer" amongst us, especially in the absence of Bunker Hill.  However, I might try to have a go at something if I have time later.  Given the chaos I appear to have walked back into at the office, that may be considerably later but we will see...

Brief interim thanks to Richard for organising etc and to Scratchy for his very kind gift (which went down well in the car this morning).

I'll take the opportunity to add a highlight too- which was to hear Graham (Slo-Blo) play with such vigour and authority.  The time he has put into the guitar over the last 18 months or so really shows.

Title: Re: ***** EuroWeenie 2011 ****
Post by: Richard on April 04, 2011, 11:36:32 AM
I suppose I should say something about the weekend to endorse the sense of fun and frivolity (clean eh?) from other weenies and of course those who travelled from the frozen climes of the northern hemisphere, that is delineated by being meaning anywhere north of Cheltenham to us Bristle folk.

I think it worth noting that with the exception of the brave Lady Blueshome, all other womenfolk chose the sensible option and stayed at home. That is of course no slight upon Her Ladyship the Lady Blueshome but merely serves to underline her undying enthusiam for listening to a bunch of reprobates twanging their ancient guitars.

Musically I think it was a success with the more able encouraging the less able for our 'out of the hat' duo\trio's. Personally I though there noticeable improvements in the playing of Slo-blo
(Graham), Norfolk Slim (Simon) and Harvey (Andrew) who should stop playing with himself and get out there and do a bit in public   :-X

Prof's Memphis Minnie class was very good, clear and concise, maybe that's why he's a professor... and a thank you for dishing out copies of his excellent CD.

It was a little hard to judge the lap class as I led it, in retrospect I wonder if it was a little too hard with too much to take in? I had intended it as a (theoretical) foundation for lap playing for experienced guitarists to get around the fretboard in any key - well there's no point in buggering about with that sort of talent in the class is there! I should add that I honestly think with the Prof's musical apptitude he will probably be taking the class next year. Rearrange the words - duck, like, water, a, to   For those who wanted a copy of my diy dvd I hope to get 'em in the post next week.

What else? Ah, yes we were joined by Will Greener (and lady artiste friend) for the event, he is certainly one of the most tasteful harp players I have heard and incidentally asked the most lap style questions! I gather the sketches will be available in the future.

If I have forgotten anybody sorry about that, I can only cope with so much but I should add a big thank you to Phil for his support. One final point, what happened to the Candian contingent of Ghost Rider.... could he be in the sky somewhere?

Most noble of you to post them, my only complaint is that we all look so b****y ancient and wrecked, which of course was not the case.

Great pictures, loved the action shots -- nice hotel!

Michael, thanks for right sizing the pictures - we don't want to many pixels of Richard.

Richard I see a nice showboating technique of playing the lap steel with slide underneath the fretboard -- perhaps a future workshop?

So what happened to Ghostrider -- no show?  Did he get taken hostage in Turkey?

Marshcat, who was gigging this year and couldn't attend the Euroweenie Weekend, tipped me off that there were some videos of Will Greener aka Capt. Bliss on YouTube. Here's one which gives an idea of the kind of performance we enjoyed in Hampshire:
