Rhyme / Rhyming Dictionaries
« on: May 23, 2023, 05:28:40 PM »
What would be useful is access to a very good rhyme dictionary, a book that organizes words according to their rhymes and is comprehensive enough to cross index close rhymes, slant rhymes, etc. That way in cases such as the one we've been discussing, we could attempt to put together a lineup of the usual (or unusual) suspects--at least those that are listed in the book. I checked but didn't find any online, but there are several print versions. I haven't seen any of them, but here's the Amazon page. There are a couple others listed below the main entry.

And some interesting info:

As is mentioned in the second link, the Chinese beat us to it:

I've used the Chinese rime dictionaries and rime books in that other part of my life in the study of historical phonology. It's a fascinating area, but like any area of study it can descend into madness if one does not carefully monitor one's thought processes and the potential for changes to one's personality. (I have stories--You could not make this stuff up.)  YMMV
