In a typical program he would introduce 'an extinguished guest'... then play the blues of Bobby Rush or the gospel of the Mighty Sons of Glory, then rhapsodize about Dip's Drive-in Laundromat. Community news - for instance, who was about to be 'funeralized' - might follow - Early Wright, obituary to the DJ, WROX Clarksdale
You don't necessarily need a car and many participants get along just fine without one. There is a shuttle to and from the airport in Seattle, and for the concerts that happen in town during the festival there is another (free) shuttle. Pretty much everything happens at the Fort - all of the workshops and most of the festival - so if you're staying in the dorms and on the meal plan, most of your needs are taken care of. There's also a CD shop that sells basic guitar supplies etc. on site for the duration of the workshop. The new Centrum brochure makes grand claims about the food at the newly opened dining hall. The one thing you may want to hit town for is beer/liquor, and possibly an escape from the Fort Worden dining experience if the new dining hall turns out to be the same old same old. There are usually enough people going in to mooch a ride. Some people also walk into town for the exercise and head-clearing benefits.
Hi all, I just picked up a CD yesterday on Smithsonian/Folkways called "Blues Highway", featuring songster Warner Williams and his harmonica-playing partner, Jay Summerour, both of whom will be on staff at PT this summer. I was particularly interested to hear Mr. Williams, since my friend Michael Roach has always spoken highly of his musicianship. After listening to this CD, I can see why--he is an excellent guitarist in the East Coast style, with a lot of bounce and an engaging vocal style. He favors E standard a lot on the CD, and is able to take solos where he plays leads while supplying chordal back-up that sometimes sounds like two guitars. He also does an expecially nifty version of "Key To The Highway", really slippery. He plays two Standards on the CD, as well, "I'm Confessing That I Love You" and "Honeysuckle Rose", both of which sound great. On one number, "Hey bartender, There's a Big Bug In My Beer", they are joined by ace thumb-picker Eddie Pennington, who will also be on staff. Mr. Summerour has really nice tone and phrasing. On a couple of the songs, they sing in unison, something which can sound so great that I often forget about as a musical possibility. I'm glad to have had the introduction to Warner Williams and Jay Summerour's music that the CD provides, and look forward to meeting and hearing them at Port Townsend this summer. All best, John
How do you arrange to be "pre-soaked"?? Where do people stay during the pre-soak period?
Hi Tim,
Email Jed, (cick on his name) who appears at the top of this thread - he is the big pre-soak organizer.? Jed tries to book officers housing at the Fort, it's always iffy, so contact him early.

Is there any advantage to having a car during the workshop, or are all activities in one location?? Do most people stay at the Fort?
Yes, everyone stays at the Fort.? I don't think there is an advantage to having a car, there are usually enough folks with cars to hitch a ride to town for a grocery run.? But as UB says - town is only 2 miles away and also makes for a very nice walk.
Cheers and looking forward to meeting you! slack

Hey you all, I have plenty of housing for any weenies who want to pre-soak. Best way to do this is to "reserve" a room thru Jed, and at deadline time (60 days out) I'll release all housing that we don't need.
Changing subjects - there will be a wild blues van or whatever coming west this summer. Drink Small will get up to the DC area, and hop in a rig with Warner Williams, Jay Summerour, and Eric Freeman. They'll be going to the Lowell Festival (outside of Boston), on the weekend of July 24, then all will take I-90 to Seattle - no turns. Can you imagine this? Warner and Drink have never been out west because they won't fly, so this is going to be our only shot (my guess) at hanging with them.
My question is - anybody want to ride on this bus?
Jed: I want to be counted on that heavenly list staying with the Weenies, I want to be sippin' and strummin' bye'n'bye, I want to smell the wind in the firs, I want to see Uncle Bud tending coals and salmon with his beer in his right hand and his cigarette in his left, I want to watch Sudbury sample some frozen Hornitos, or Patron or Duenos, I want to sit around the kitchen table munching guacamole and sipping a beer, as Lightnin' Wells or John Miller strum or just plain "carry on" and crack jokes that bring tears to my eyes, with unbridled guffaws from all, I want to learn more mandolin from Rich del Grosso, I want to stay in a brick or Officers House, sleep with the window open and the cool breeze wafting over me, I want to chill with all my buds: FP, Slack, Uncle Bud, Jed, Doc, Shelley, Jan, Scott, Sudbury, JohnM, Phil, and others too numerous to count, I want to be on the porch , 2 shots under my belt, when Lightnin' breaks into "Cecelia", I want to hear FP wax sentimental about the Canadian grainbelt, and computer science, and his instruments aplenty, I want to see Peter's new baby, hold her and watch her smile, and hear him sing a Dylan tune again in his leopard-skin pillbox hat, I want to see Cephas and Wiggins play again with del Grosso, tearing it up, I want to break down a few more killer tunes in John M's classes, I want to have a great time, and know that we all will, I want sunny days and cool nites, ...and the only way is to sign me up, so sign me up, and keep me posted. I gotta stay in a house, not a dorm. Do we do anything else, like find a hotel room, as we wait? Or is is a sure thing that we will have some place to sleep at the fort?

Do good, be nice, eat well, smile, treat the ladies well, and ignore all news reports--which can't be believed anyway,
I'll be at Port Centrum for the 1st time this year, lookin' forward to it. I could be keen on this pre-soak thang 'cause I need a little softening up before those blues demons start whaling around my door.
Hey jed, Count me in with the Weenies this year! I look forward to practicing the BBQ arts as much as singin' the blues. I'll be there for pre-soak as well. That'll be me rollin' up in a rusty but faithful '71 VW Squareback, Phoebus, loaded with guitars, and a BBQ smoker on the roof rack. When's the earliest I can arrive?
Welcome to Weenie Campbell, Miblues, You might want to send a personal message to jed to get particulars about pre-soak.
All for now. John C.

Speaking of the new Dining Hall (not), I noticed in the brochure a mention that there will also be a coffee shop in the building. Does this mean that John and Heidi, the Java Gypsies, will be banished from the fort? I will greatly miss my double cap wettish, served with charming grace. Maybe we can get them to pull up near the officer's housing on a prearranged schedule. All for now. John C.
