Kids at Port Townsend
« on: February 27, 2005, 09:51:37 AM »
I've got a 12-year old son who's becoming a pretty good little guitarist. Plays both electric and acoustic, has a much better grasp of theory than I do, and likes to play blues and ragtime when he's not recreating Nirvana albums.

I'm interested in going to Port Townsend this year (have been to three IGS sessions) and am interested in taking him along. My questions:

1. Is 12 too young for the Pt. Townsend program?

2. Do many kids come, or is it primarily adults?

Hi UnclePhil,  welcome to Weenie Cambell.

Yes, kids do come.  Some folks bring there kids every year.  There is one family, from NJ, 4 kids I think, it is a family vacation for them, they've been coming for 4 or 5 years.  Last year the oldest daughter had a new baby, about three months old, they brought the baby too!  We've seen kids grow up at PT - David Jacob Strain (who may end up pursuing a professional music career) comes to mind.  If you contact Centrum before the workshop - I'm sure they would let you know how many kids are coming with similar ages.

What a great father and son thing to do.

Hey Phil, welcome to Weenie Campbell!

There usually are a few families that attend, as John D said, but also, quite a few kids from Port Townsend itself also attend classes and functions. And your son might want to bring his electric as well 'cause often the local kids perform an electric number at the student concert. I don't know about this year, but in the past there was sometimes a class or two, by the likes of John Dee Holeman, in electric licks in the Hill country style and such, which were heavily attended by teens with their electrics.

Hope to meet you there.
All for now.
