That's the guitar I play all the time. My children wanted to get it for me as a birthday present so they borrowed money from me to buy it - Jerry Ricks, on his Martin D76 guitar (a US Bicentennial model)

Thanks, Pan! I seriously, seriously have NO business playing like that at all, which is kinda what makes it fun.

Yup, that works. I prefer yours though!

Thanks, UB - prefer mine to what? Cooder? That's not my favorite cut by him, but I do love some of the stuff on Boomer's Story...  wow!

I think that guitar sounds pretty good, even if the amp is set just a hair too hot.

Yes, prefer yours to Cooder's, though obviously yours is a quick take that has some shaky moments lyrically. I really like that slide note Pan referred to, like the playing on electric, and the enthusiastic vocal. I like Ry, his playing and attitude in general, and I like the Chicken Skin Music record, though haven't listened in eons.

BTW, I hadn't clicked on Alex's original link to the Frank Stokes version on YouTube. I did just now and got this: "This video contains content from WMG, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds"

And to that I say, up yours, WMG. Like you own Frank Stokes.

That is definitely annoying...

Incidentally, I noticed that some of the links to the sheet music in the original post bring up really small scans - like thumbnails, so I'm including links to larger scans below:

Mebbe this is a friendlier link for the source tune:

Yes, that works. I hadn't tried the original link because I just listened to the tune on my own, but sometimes it's more convenient to listen with the YouTube link. Looks like that's becoming more problematic these days, as like Al, I get this problem quite often, and not just for the "#channel" links. (I'm all for artists getting paid properly for their music, less enthusiastic about corporations claiming rights on stuff from 1928 that has nothing to do with them.)

Looks like it's time to fire up the ol' VPN.

When I was checking on what other versions I had of this tune I was a little surprised by a snippet of Mississippi John Hurt doing the song, found on the DC Blues: Library of Congress Recordings Vol 2. It's one of those half-remembered tunes he does during these sessions. Not on YouTube, at least in a preliminary search. Played out of C position.

Here is a hillbilly version of the tune by South Carolina's talking blues man Chris Bouchillon recorded in 1928. He plays it flat-picked in the key of D and his lyrics show the definite minstrel origin of this piece. http://picosong.com/gCM4

Fiddlin' John Carson also recorded a version that I haven't seen mentioned here or in the Frank Stokes thread:

Here's the Gallus Brothers from the Portland Old-Time festival this year. Featuring nice picking from weenie member Devin Champlin.
